10 Best Sights to See in Puerto Rico

The island of Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory that draws travelers from around the globe with its postcard-worthy beaches, lush rainforests, colonial towns and piña coladas. Here are 10 sights to see in Puerto Rico, just to get you dreaming.

1. El Morro
Many tourists flock to El Morro, a cliff-top fortress built in 1539. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views, stroll through the stone corridors, barracks, and tunnels and step back into another time. Don’t miss the doodles on the dungeon walls.

2. Vieques
Isla de Vieques has breathtaking beaches. Formerly a U.S. Navy base, today it is a wildlife reserve. Vieques is a magnet for ecotourists who prefer a laid-back, low-key, relatively undeveloped escape. Don’t miss the luminescent waters of Mosquito Bay.

3. Old San Juan
The colonial center of Puerto Rico’s enchanting capital is brimming with historic architecture, museums, restaurants and nightlife. The cobblestone streets are lined with colorful homes with decorative wrought iron terraces. Shady plazas are flanked by open-air cafes and craft shops. You’ll find the tomb of Ponce de León at the glorious Cathedral of San Juan Bautista.

4. El Yunque National Forest
Come here to explore the mountainous jungle’s beautiful waterfalls, crags, rivers and amazing dwarf forest. You can also spot rare birds, frogs and Taíno petroglyphs here. Various trails and paved paths offer a range of hiking excursions for all ability levels. Located less than an hour east of San Juan, this region makes a fun day trip or even an overnight camping trip.

5. Flamenco Beach
Located on the small island of Culebra. Many visitors to Puerto Rico will charter a vessel to sail the twenty miles to this island paradise. There are some amenities there, so you can grab a bite or a drink and make a day of it or stay in one of the vacation villas, or campground nearby.

6. Camuy River Cave Park
It is a scenic subterranean site on Puerto Rico’s northwestern coast. The cave park is filled with stalagmites, stalactites and incredible natural architecture. Visitors can boat along the Camuy River, the third-largest subterranean river on the planet, to tour the caves’ interior attractions.

7. Isla Palominos
It’s a private island an 8 minute ferry ride away, but the El Conquistador resort there welcomes day visitors. Scuba diving, kayaking and horseback riding along the beach are popular pastimes. You can also charter a glass-bottomed boat to enjoy the crystalline beauty of the sea here.

8. Arecibo Observatory
It is the world’s largest radio telescope. However, you don’t have to be an astronomy buff to come here. The visitors center does a good job of explaining some of its scientific achievements, including attempts to communicate with possible extraterrestrial life.

9. Museo de Arte de Ponce
Located in the city of Ponce on the island’s southern coast, this art museum contains fourteen galleries and a world-famous collection of Pre-Raphaelite art. Both European and Latin American artists are well represented.

10. Bioluminescent Bay
One of the most stellar sights to see in Puerto Rico is the bioluminescent waters found in a few special lagoons in Fajardo, Vieques and Lajas. Special plankton here glow when stirred, so if you swim around at night, it’s like an enchanting fairyland of starry sparks.

Fear not! If you are headed to the beach, this video is made for you.
This week we bring you our “Top 5 Beaches in Puerto Rico” selection.

Puerto Rico is a very popular tourist destination in the Caribbean and let me tell you, some of Puerto Rico’s beaches are World Class! If you get a chance, we highly recommend a trip to the island, the food and the people were amazing.

OK, so let’s say you’re in, you’ve decided to go down to Puerto Rico and have the summer of your life. Where should you go?

# 5 – Pozuelo Beach / Playa Pozuelo (1:28)
Situated on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, Playa Pozuelo is about a 20-minute drive from the town of Salinas. This would be a great choice if you like going for long walks on the beach or enjoy going swimming. We gave Pozuelo Beach a 7 out of 10.

# 4 – Mar de Chiquita Beach / Playa Mar De Chiquita (3:12)
About 40 minutes west of San Juan, this was probably the most beautiful beach we found.
Easily recognizable for its iconic half crescent shape. The actual beach is sheltered from the ocean by a barrier of rock cliffs. With amazing turquoise color waters, Mar de Chiquita beach would have been our top 1 or 2 if not for the fact that it tends to get very crowded.
However, if you want to avoid the crowds and you don’t mind a bit of adventure, we found a beautiful little private beach about half a mile away and we give directions on how to get there in the video. Whether you like the busy crowds or want some alone time this beach has it all. We gave Mar the Chiquita Beach beach an 8 out of 10

# 3 – El Combate Beach / Playa El Combate (3:25)
At about a 20-minute drive from the town Cabo Rojo, Playa El Combate sits on the very south west tip of the island. But don’t let the 2 hour drive from San Juan deter you from visiting this amazing beach. With some of the bluest waters in the Caribbean Playa El Combate is a MUST DO in your Puerto Rico trip. With about a mile and a half of beautiful white sands you would have the beach all to yourself most days, just avoid the weekend crowds. And if you spend the full day, you will be rewarded with incredible sunsets. We gave El Combate Beach beach an 8.5 out of 10

# 2 – Electric Beach – Vieques Island (7:07)
Just East of Puerto Rico sits Vieques Island “the little baby sister island”. In order to get to Vieques you need to take a Ferry from Ceiba, it takes about 45 minutes. The ferry runs 3 times a day both ways and you’ll need to book in advance on the Ferry’s website. Here is the link to their site:
If you have a couple of days to spare while in Puerto Rico we highly recommend visiting Vieques, especially if you want to experience local life and have a great time. Out of all the beaches in Vieques our favorite was Electric Beach. Named that due to the huge underwater electric line that brings power to the island. Here not only are the water crystal clear, but they have amazing coral reefs, perfect for snorkeling. Just a short 10 minute drive from Electric Beach is Esperenza, a popping little beach town with tons of bars and restaurants. The perfect place to end the day
We gave Vieques a 9 out of 10

# 1 – Sucia Beach / Playa Sucia (10:29)
This isolated beach is so little known that only the locals ever go there. Other than the lighthouse you can’t find a single building within a 30 minute drive. Sitting by itself at the end of the island away from people and ports, the waters have stayed pristine. If you want to experience nature at its best you need to squeeze Sucia Beach into your Puerto Rico trip. Crystal blue waters, not a single person there other than yourself, astonishing views and the freshest air.
Hands down Puerto Rico’s #1 beach. We gave this beach a 10 out of 10

If you know or have visited any other beaches that you think should have made the Top 5, please tell us in the comment below.

Playa Puerto Nuevo - This beach also known as Balneario de Vega Baja, and it’s the perfect place to spend a fun day with family and friends. Characterized by its beautiful golden sand, and a shallow pool where kids can swim and play, this beach is unique. There is a large limestone wall that protects the pool from waves and gives the beach a beautiful shape. This beach has been awarded the blue flag for clean waters for 2021!

On this beach, we had an amazing encounter with some sea creatures, what an incredible experience!

How to get there:

Los Tubos Beach in Manatí:

Los Tubos Beach has a beautiful long coastline where you can have a stroll and enjoy a nice evening. Because of the strong currents it’s excellent for surfing. Los Tubos is not a swimming beach, but it’s a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the view.
How to get there:

Mar Chiquita, Manatí:

Located in the north coast, Mar Chiquita is one of the most popular natural pools in Puerto Rico. The beach is shaped like a huge shell or a half-moon, giving this place very distinctive scenery.

Number 8: Shop in el Mercado in La Placita – Be sure to stop by and talk to Hector Ruiz Housler, who sells herbs and concoctions used to treat all sorts of ailments.

Number 7: Have a cafecito at Café Cuatro Sombras - Located in Old San Juan and has the richest, most authentic Puerto Rican coffee in town.

Number 6: Visit Casa Cortés - Indulge your senses in fine chocolate and fine art here. Try their chocolate and cheese snack and sample one of their delicious chocolate beverages.

Number 4: Spend an afternoon in the Botanical Gardens – Take a tour and smell the cinnamon and bay rum trees and if you’re lucky, you just might spot a coqui.

Number 3: Stay on Condado Beach. I love the San Juan Marriott Resort and Casino. It’s a quick drive from the airport, has breathtaking views, and has amazing service.

Number 2: Have a Bioluminescence experience - Puerto Rico has three Bioluminescent bays which contain millions of micro-organisms, called “dinoflagellates”, that glow fluorescent in the dark when agitated.

Number 1: Explore the beaches. Puerto Rico is blessed with beautiful beaches around the entire island. With warm Caribbean water and happy vacationers relaxing with their good vibes, a visit to the beach is an absolute must. My top picks are Condado, Luquillo, Dorado and Bahia Beach.
