What to do in LAKE ATITLAN Off the Beaten Path | JAIBALITO HIKE | Guatemala Top Things to Do and See

What to do in Lake Atitlan Off the Beaten Path? In our travel Guatemala series: Lake Atitlan Guatemala Top Things to Do and See, you find everything you need to know about Jaibalito and how to travel Guatemala 2020, what to do in Guatemala Lake Atitlan and all the beautiful places you should visit around this Guatemala volcano lake.

Expect amazing views of this stunning Guatemala lake and the volcanoes! Lago Atitlan is renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. If you ask yourself if you should go to Guatemala our answer is YES! Our Guatemala Travel Vlog series show you where to go in Guatemala.

Join us on the most beautiful Guatemala hike of Lake Atitlan. We start in Jaibalito Lake Atitlan, a cute and colourful village. We hike from Jaibalito to Santa Cruz La Laguna, another Mayan village at Lago de Atitlan Guatemala.

We are spending more than a month on beautiful Lake Atitlan Guatemala.
It is the deepest lake in Central America and it is situated around 1500 m above sea level. It lies in a caldera, formed by a volcano eruption around 84000 years ago. Lake Atitlan is surrounded by three majestic volcanoes.

During our time here we are exploring many of the Mayan villages dotted around the lake, for example Santiago Atitlan, San Pedro La Laguna, Santa Catarina Palopo, San Juan La Laguna, Panajachel and San Marcos La Laguna.

As our Airbnb between San Juan La Laguna and San Pedro La Laguna we walk to the port of San Pedro where we take the public lancha to reach Jaibalito Guatemala. The lancha makes a stop in San Marcos La Laguna on the way to Jaibalito.

Jaibalito is the smallest and most remote of the #lakeatitlan villages and also the least developed. The view of the volcanoes from the dock in Jaibalito is gorgeous! It is only accessible by boat or on foot. There are many colourful murals in Jaibalito. We eat at the little local Guatemalan restaurant Cafe El Escondido, also called Restaurante El Escondido.

Don't miss this Lake Atitlan hike. The walk from Jaibalito to Santa Cruz La Laguna is lovely! The view over the lake and Volcano San Pedro, Volcano Tolimán and Volcano Atitlán is stunning!

After an hour hike we reach Santa Cruz La Laguna. You have a panorama Guatemala volcano view.

In the next episode we will show you Santa Cruz La Laguna Lake Atitlan.

Guatemala City: Lost in the Streets and Underground Markets of Guatemala

The popular notion about Guatemala City is that its too dangerous for tourists. I will pushback against the idea by going into the streets and markets frequented by common Guatemaltecos.

Welcome to the real Guatemala!

Lake Atitlan Guatemala Travel Guide 4K

In this Lake Atitlan travel guide we explore 5 villages around the lake. Including Santiago De Atitlan, San Juan La Laguna, Santa Catarina, San Antonio Palopo and Panajachel. I would say this is the best place to visit in Guatemala because there are many villages to explore around the lake and culture to explore. But best of all is probably going to be the incredible natural beauty and scenery of the lake Atitlan.

There are a few towns around the lake also worth mentioning but we did not go. Such as San Marcos, which is popular with new age explorers, San Pedro La Laguna with foreign tourist and San Lucas for its proximity outside of the lake region to the Pacific Ocean. Our travel guide is from Santa Cruz La Laguna and says that one is the best. If you can get around to many of the towns and villages you will certainly feel culturally enriched and as if you really met the Mayan people.

/// ABOUT US ///
Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Central America. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with #LatinAmerica and #Spanish. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. We are now using our new skills to document our adventures around South and Central America. Our desire through these videos is to provide helpful and inspiring content for other travelers while also showing people around the world how beautiful Latin America truly is! Thanks for following along and please leave a comment to say hi!

5 Things NOT To Do in Guatemala

Get more Tips here!
With its lush landscapes, Mayan ruins, and towering volcanoes, there aren't too many things not to love about Guatemala. But like most countries, there are some Things NOT To Do in Guatemala.

1. Don't Visit Guatemala City
According to the U.S. Department of State's travel notice, the city is rife with violent crimes against U.S. citizens and foreign travelers. The capital was once considered safe, but those days are long gone.

2. Don't Wear Flip Flops to the Mayan Ruins
Unless you want to lose your footing and sprain an ankle, leave the flip flops in your suitcase. The ancient Mayan Ruins are over a thousand years old, staircases may be unstable, and grassy areas uneven. So watch your step!

3. Don't Have Your Heart Set on Delicious Coffee
Guatemala may be known for producing some of the best brews you'll ever taste. Sadly, most of the coffee is exported, which means you won't be sipping a cup of Guatemalan joe during your stay.

4. Don't Travel at Night
It's a necessary precaution when traveling, especially in Guatemala. When night falls, the chances of becoming a victim of a crime are far greater.

5. Don't Take Photos of the Locals Without Permission
There are unsubstantiated rumors in Mayan communities that foreigners have the intent to steal their children and sell them abroad. A Japanese tourist was tragically killed by an angry mob of 500 villagers after he took pictures of indigenous women and children in a market.

Where do you want to know what NOT to do in next?
Comment Below!

In this video, I will be showing you guys the must see places in Guatemala City, Guatemala. where to go and where not to go and even the safest neighborhood in Guatemala City.

The best of Guatemala all in 5 fantastic days - Atitlan, Chichicastenango Antigua and more.

With a new direct flight from JFK to Guatemala City, it is easier then ever to go explore this exceptional Central American gem and see all the Mayan culture, vibrant colors, and taste the amazing foods. Yes there is Cocoa, yes there is Coffee, but there is so much more, from epic wildlife, to active volcanos, and darling little towns that you never want to leave. Either on boat along the shores of the Atitlan lake or down the cobbled streets of Old Antigua, Guatemala is a place you want to return to before you even leave.
