Puerto Rico: El Yunque Rainforest (Hikes, and waterfalls) (goPro Hero 7)

The El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system. At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse. Come experience the breathtaking scenery, clear mountain rivers, and outdoor recreation opportunities year round.

Best El Yunque Rainforest Hike #hike

What do you do if you get shut out for tix to El Yunque national Park? Well, if you're like me, you do some last minute digging and book an inexpensive, last-minute guided hike with Spot In Tours. We ended up having a fantastic time hiking through the lush rain forest on the south side, swimming in crystal-clear pools of rainwater in the river. Throw in a couple rope swing dunkings and eye-popping natural water slides, and you have the perfect day!

PUERTO'S RICO'S YELLOWSTONE | Exploring El Yunque National Forest + Why Tickets Are Required ???? ????️ ????

El Yunque National Forest is Puerto Rico's premier hiking destination, a short, 45-minute drive from San Juan. The forest spans nearly 30,000 acres on the northeastern side of the island.

El Yunque receives around 200 inches of rain each year, on average. That precipitation feeds waterfalls throughout the forest, which is home to more than 1,000 plant species and animals like the coqui tree frog, Puerto Rican parrot, Puerto Rican boa, and Puerto Rican giant green lizard.

I enjoyed hiking to Mount Britton Tower and the El Yunque summit, plus the Angelito and Los Picachos Trails.

As of April 2023, El Yunque was limiting access to 300 vehicles per day to prevent overcrowding. And so, you had to make a reservation in advance on Recreation.gov. The cost was $2 per car, and it was non-refundable.

One way around the daily limit is to book with an authorized tour operator that uses special permits. Recreation.gov also releases a set number of tickets at 8 a.m. each morning, for the next day, to help people who did not plan ahead.

Hiking Angelito Trail to a NATURAL Swimming Pool in El Yunque National Forest

Angelito Trail is one of the most popular trails in El Yunque National Forest towards Puerto Rico's east end. Only 45 minutes away from San Juan, the trail is well-trafficked with tourists and locals alike as it's open year-round, relatively easy, and leads to an incredible natural pool, Las Damas, along the Rio Mameyes.

This trail doesn't require a permit for entry, unlike other areas within El Yunque National Forest. In fact, that's the exact reason we came here - because we missed out on getting a permit for the La Mina Recreation Area of El Yunque National Forest (this may change post-pandemic).

But it honestly felt like it didn't matter by the day's end. Hiking the Angelito Trail, swimming in the Las Damas Pool, and climbing the rocks of the Rio Mameyes were more than enough to keep our entire family happy!

El Yunque's Most Challenging Trail | Crazy Puerto Rico Hike

Join us on day four of our Puerto Rico adventure as we take to the El Yunque National Forest for Puerto Rico's muddiest hike, the El Toro Trail. We'll show you why this El Yunque hike is one of the most polarizing in Puerto Rico, as it is either loved or hated by those who are brave enough to attempt it. Stay tuned to the end to see if we make it to the peak and if we think this hike is worth it.

BEST EXCURSION IN PUERTO RICO - El Yunque!

Puerto RIco is a beautiful island with tons of things to do. On our vacation we booked in our opinion, the best excursion the island has to offer. This is our experience at El Yunque! The only rainforest in the United States, lies on the eastside of the island. Our tour guide led us on a hike through the forest sharing with us the unique plants and trees along with fun facts about our national rainforest.

The main reason we booked this excursion was to experience the natural slides within the water falls. As we made our way into the forest, our guides took us to an open area full of fun! Along with the natural water slides, we were able to cliff jump and also swing from a rope into the refreshing water. The hike was not challenging and the tour guides make sure to help everyone get through to the end. Make sure to bring the right shoes for this excursion. You WILL be getting wet and stepping on plenty of rocks.

I recommend this excursion to anyone traveling to the wonderful island of Puerto Rico! You can not visit and miss out on El Yunque. I hope you enjoy this footage from our vacation. Please let me know what you think or if this video was helpful!

Best Day Trips from San Juan, Puerto Rico - El Yunque Rain Forest & Culebra Island

In this video we explore El Yunque Rain Forest as well as Culebra Island, El Yunque Rain Forest is about an hour from downtown San Juan. We rented a car so we could go at our own pace and this was during Covid so thought it would be better to explore on our own.
A must do hike is Mt. Britton, incredible views from the top and paved all the way. Take your time and bring a picnic to enjoy this amazing Rain Forest. Click on the link to learn more about operating hours of the Rain Forest.

The second day trip that you should do while visiting Puerto Rico is to go to Culebra Island. Rent a golf cart from $65, best way to explore the island. Catch the ferry (you can get the details from our video) again this is about a hour drive from San Juan, you also need to make sure you get there in time. Our hotel told us that we need to be there an hour before- not sure why but we decided we didn't want to miss the ferry. As we were on the ferry we did notice that there were several people that were getting sea sick so sit in the back of the boat where it open to the wind or take a dramamine. There are beautiful beaches here that should not be missed.

Hiking to secret waterfall in El Yunque , Puerto Rico

Hiking through the rainforest searching for hidden waterfalls in el Yunque national forest, Puerto Rico. secluded from the other rivers you will not find this spot with the main attractions in el yunque. the trail is basically non existent so it takes a bit of effort to arrive, taking around 2 hours to get to the last waterfall, and must be vigilant because the area suffers from flash flooding.

Swimming in El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico (Rainforest Adventures!)

While visiting Puerto Rico, I swam in El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico. El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System and is a top Puerto Rico attraction - especially for travelers who love outdoor adventure. Don't miss this amazing place when going to Puerto Rico!

Side note: Is there anything more soothing than swimming in the rainforest while it rains? I think not. ???? I totally thought I didn’t want it to rain when I went hiking in El Yunque, but it ended up being the perfect opportunity to go for a relaxing swim. So tranquil!
