TORO NEGRO FOREST: The Best Hiking Alternative To El Yunque | Puerto Rico Travel Guides

Hi there! In this video I'll give you a complete guide of what might just be the best hiking alternative to El Yunque, the Toro Negro State Forest.
If you're planning on visiting Puerto Rico, it wouldn't be a surprise if El Yunque is on the top of the list of places you're planning to visit. El Yunque is full of scenic hiking trails, breathtaking views from lookout towers, and has nearby rivers that you can dip into and relax. Even though you can now visit El Yunque during weekdays without reserving a spot on the website recreation.gov until December 13, 2021, many might still be unable to visit if spots run out for the weekend. If you find yourself in this situation, or if you simply want to visit other forests and hiking trails in Puerto Rico, you’re in luck, because the Toro Negro State Forest offers all the things you might like to experience at El Yunque, and even more!

El Yunque National Forest - Hike to Juan Diego Falls | Puerto Rico 2021

El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in USA. Juan Diego Falls is a secluded waterfall in El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico. This falls consist of a set of 2 cascaded falls. The lower falls can be accessed from the Juan Diego Creek Trail located at 9.5 km mark of the El Yunque Rainforest.
The trail to the lower falls is well paved and directed and is an easy one to access. The lower falls is around 15 feet tall. The upper falls is more majestic and the trail leading to the upper fall is bit strenuous and steep. Recommend going to this trail with a hiking boots since the path is muddy and slippery on the rainy days. The upper falls is 40 feet tall and is very remote and mesmerizing. We visited this park in February 2021. In order to enter the El Yunque National Forest you need a timed ticket reservation. Do ensure you book ahead since it gets filled up fast.

Unbelievably Breathtaking! El Yunque Rainforest of Puerto Rico. A Must-See!

We were lucky enough to find last minute reservation tickets to El Yunque National Rainforest in Puerto Rico on our trip to the east side of the island. It had been a long time since we were there. Many of the roads were closed still since Hurricane Maria's path of destruction, but the small section we saw was super cool. We stopped at La Coca Falls, Yokahu Tower, Mount Britton and Mount Britton Tower, Bano de Oro and Bano Grande. Overall it was a great day and I can't wait to go back and see the southern entrance and other waterfalls and treasures inside the park!

Puerto Rico: Natural Water Slide! Las Paylas (goPro Hero 7)

The Las Paylas water slides (or chorreras, in Spanish) are very popular with the locals. This area is beautiful to look at. It’s a fun place to picnic and spend some time watching the people slide, or just to play in the water pools. There is no charge, per se, at the river. However, for easy access you can pay $5 to park or 50¢ per person to walk down some guy’s trail to the river. His gate is open 8am -5pm. I hear he now offers a bathroom and a little store for some basics.

Swimming in Charco El Hippie | Exploring the Natural Pools of Puerto Rico

Charco el Hippie is a fresh water natural pool and waterfall in Naguabo, Puerto Rico. Located in the south end of El Yunque rainforest, it is not access through the El Yunque rainforest park entrance.

Exact location -

Enter from Naguabo on Route 191 and follow the GPS navigation along the one lane road. There is a free lower level parking area (dirt lot along the road) for cars, and SUV/Jeep can drive a bit further to the end of the road for additional parking. On busy weekends or holidays, one of the neighbors offers additional PAID parking on their property.

It is a short, easy trail from the road down to the natural pools. Wear sturdy water shoes for the trail and the rocks get quite slippery.

The water is fed from the Rio Blanco river and there is a mild current from the waterfall. Most of the water is very calm with shallow areas at the entrance of the natural pool. There are deeper sections in the water for cliff jumping and rope swings. The water is about 68 degrees F (20 C) year round.

There are no facilities on site. Bring water, snack, sunblock, towels, and remember to take all of your trash with you when you leave.

Be cautious visiting after heavy rains as the road can wash out and the current can get very strong.
