Number 7. ST. MARTIN'S CATHEDRAL
St. Martin's Cathedral
Between 1563 and 1830, kings and queens of the Hungarian empire were crowned in this cathedral. The well-known Queen Maria Theresa was crowned here. The style of the cathedral is Gothic, and it has big stained glass windows. You can also go under the cathedral and see the interesting crypt and old catacombs. Don't miss this!

Number 6. DEVIN CASTLE
Devin Castle
If you like castles, you can see more than just the impressive Bratislava Castle. You can also go to Devin Castle, which is on the Danube River about 30 minutes from the city. You can ride a bike, take a bus, ride a train, or take a cruise down the river to get there. Once you get there, it will take you a few hours to climb to the top of the castle ruins and look out over the area. This castle hasn't been fixed up, but that's part of what makes it so historic and interesting.

Number 5. BRATISLAVSKY MESTIANSKY PIVOVAR CRAFT BREWERY
Bratislavsky Mestiansky Pivovar craft brewery
The climate in the Bratislava area is perfect for growing grapes, but luckily for tourists, the Slovaks also know a thing or two about making good beer. You can buy a bottle of Saris, Urliner, or Zlat Baant made in Slovakia in any bar or grocery store. Bratislava also has a number of great craft breweries. It's so popular that Bratislavsky Mestiansky Pivovar now has two locations in the city center. Since 1752, they've been making beer, so you're sure to find something you like.

Number 4. OLD BUILDING OF THE SLOVAK NATIONAL THEATER
Old Building of the Slovak National Theatre
If you're still wondering what to do, Don't miss your chance to see an opera, ballet, or play in the Slovak National Theatre's Old Building, which was built in 1886. The building looks like performance halls in Vienna because it was built in the Neo-Renaissance style by architects from Vienna. Throughout the day, you can see a variety of performances at reasonable prices. This is a great place to spend an evening.

Number 3. SLAVIN MEMORIAL
Slavin Memorial
This memorial is for the Soviet Army soldiers who died while freeing the city from the Germans who were in charge. Behind the Bratislava Castle, on a hill, is the town of Slavin. People come here to see the view, but the monument, which was built in 1960, is also an interesting example of the Stalinist style of architecture.

Number 2. THE BLUE CHURCH
The Blue Church
This amazing Art Nouveau masterpiece is one of the most unique churches in Central Europe. It is baby blue with white accents and dark blue roof tiles. As a result, the outside looks like something out of a fairy tale, and the inside feels more like a ballroom than a church.

Number 1. UFO TOWER
UFO Tower
The UFO Tower is another well-known symbol of the city. It is at one end of the SNP Bridge, which goes across the Danube. Take the elevator 95 meters (312 feet) up to the observation deck to see the view, or make a reservation to try the restaurant's creative food. The tower is part of the World Federation of Great Towers, and when it opened in 1972, it was seen as a feat of engineering.

35 Interesting and Fun Facts about Slovakia

Morocco is a fascinating country. From the culture, to the landscape, to the religion it is so different from other places I have visited. My initial impression of Morocco fell somewhere between culture shock and intrigue. Part of me wanted to immediately leave the country the first day I got there. That’s a normal reaction to culture shock.

Our visit Bratislava travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (Slovak), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting castles, churches, the old town and museums and Bratislava by night for ice hockey. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Bratislava tourism brochure, Bratislava itinerary or Bratislava, Slovakia city tour.

10 Things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Guide Video Transcript:

We're visiting Bratislava, Slovakia and in this video we're going to show you guys 10 things to do in Bratislava. Let's get started.

Our first stop was Devin Castle, which is located in Devin, a borough of Bratislava. This is the one attraction we visited that was a little further from the Old Town - a 30-minute bus ride.

Devin Castle is a ruined castle that sits on Slovak territory at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers.

We ate at a restaurant called “Modra Hviezda” which is located at the base of Bratislava Castle and feels like a cave.

Bratislava Castle was Built in the 9th century and modified over the centuries many times over, this 4-towered castle sits perched on a hill overlooking the Danube River.

You get nice views over the Old Town, plus you have the Slovak National Museum & the Baroque Gardens on the north side of the palace.

The following day, we set out to explore the Old Town and stopping cafe for a decadent breakfast.

Bratislava’s Old Town is compact & easy to explore on foot and cover most of the sights in one day. We went on our own do-it-yourself tour finding all sorts of interesting statues & landmarks.

The Blue Church is located on Bezručova Street, which is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Old Town designed in the art nouveau style.

Locals in Bratislava like to say that the best view of their city is from the UFO Bridge because you can’t see the UFO bridge. You get amazing views of Bratislava during sunset.

And while you’re down by the Danube, you can either enjoy a stroll along the river, or go on a sightseeing cruise.

Prašná bašta is another cozy restaurant located at basement level and we had another wonderful meal.

For sports fans be sure to check out a HC Slovan Bratislava ice hockey game. They play in the KHL and the level of hockey and entertainment value is fantastic.

And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bratislava. While we can see the appeal of doing this as a day trip from Vienna, we loved having the extra time to really enjoy the city, try out some great restaurants, and make it to some of the further attractions like Devin Castle. If you have a few days to spare, this is a great little capital to visit.

Any other things to do in Bratislava that we may have missed, feel free to share your suggestions with travellers in the comments below.

This is part of our Travel in Slovakia video series showcasing Slovak food (Slovakian food), Slovak culture (Slovakian culture) and Slovak cuisine (Slovakian cuisine).

Slovakia and Austria Christmas Markets | 2 COUNTRIES IN 2 DAYS | Bratislava and Vienna

We seemed to have hit these countries JUST in time! Days after returning home, major protests broke out in Vienna regarding the AUSTRIA'S TOTAL LOCKDOWN. The COVID restrictions and vaccination requirements while we were there were already quite extensive, so it is crazy to hear about everything taking place there now.

In this week's vlog, we attempt our first ever multi-country excursion! We got the chance to spend 1 day in Bratislava, Slovakia, and 3 days in Vienna, Austria!! We tried to make the most of our time in both countries, booking tours, trying the food, and exploring as much as we could with our travel passes.

In Slovakia, we took a panoramic bus tour that brought us to most of the major sights in the city. The Blue Church, Bratislava Castle, WWII memorials, and ending the day in the UFO for dinner with a gorgeous view of everything we had explored that day!

Back in Austria, we really got familiar with the train system, which seems to be the cheapest and easiest way to get around the city. We kicked things off with a walking and history tour that helped get us to get to the city and narrow in on what all we wanted to do. We visited St. Stephen's Cathedral, Mozart's apartment, Schönbrunn Palace, The Hofburg and so much more. However, our favorite place ended up being the Historic Center of Vienna. Not only did we find the coolest shops, best food, but also CHRISTMAS MARKETS galore!!!! We had NO idea that any of the Christmas Markets would be open, but they happened to start the exact day we arrived.

Tell us, where, in Europe, we should try and go to next! What would you like us to share? What did you think of the video? Leave a comment, like, and subscribe for more!!

Daily sightings of UFO in the capital city of Slovakia! #bratislava #travel #slovakia #slovensko

I got addicted to Slovakia on this trip – despite some diabetes issues

Can you travel to Slovakia with diabetes? Sure! Slovakia is a really cool place to visit, a little country tucked into inland Europe full of mountains, sights to see, and things to do. Be smart, and be careful, and diabetes won’t stop you.

Here’s my personal blood sugar report from seven days in Slovakia.

*** #BGNOW STATS
First of all, the quick stats. I checked my blood sugar 36 times over the seven days. The readings ranged from 44 (twice) to a high of 308. The average was 161, which is much better than it was in the last country, the Czech Republic.

Rather than highs, my problem in Slovakia was lows, if anything. In fact, some of the highs were from overcorrecting lows. That, plus the fact that I was focused on improving my numbers, and the fact that Slovakia is fun to be outside and active in, are what brought the average down.

Here are a couple diabetes-related stories from my time in Slovakia.

*** A PERFECT START TO SLOVAKIA
My first reading after crossing the border into Slovakia, on board the train from the Czech Republic, was 100 even. That set the tone in Slovakia, and in fact for the next 24 hours, wandering around the capital of Bratislava, all my readings were under 200. The hours of walking around to see the sights like the festive, rainy Christmas market — this was December — and the misty Danube River, the master class I put on in graceful ice skating, and the public Humalog injections, all added up to a very good day of readings.

It only got out of hand when I was 194 in mid-afternoon, and took a shot and had some apple strudel. Before dinner, which was lasagna and beer, I was only 107 and the Humalog was still in me, so I waited until the end of the meal to take my shot. Could have used another unit or two I guess.

*** UPS AND DOWNS IN LEVOČA
Otherwise, things were good even on the train between the High and Low Tatras mountain ranges that stretch across Slovakia. My time in the town of Levoča was defined by ups and downs but a lot more lows than I usually get. I was 44 when we arrived, a hamburger and fries made it 260, then I was 57 the next morning. Over the next couple days I had readings of 65, 44, 56, and 64. Part of that was too much insulin; part of it was exercise, like hiking up to Spiš Castle. It was worth it; the clear air and the views were awesome. Even if it was closed.

*** HIGH TATRAS MOUNTAINS STRESS KILLS BG
Stress is maybe my number one blood sugar killer, generally, and one day on a series of cable cars up to Slovakia’s highest point, Lomnický Štit, I was walloped. The day started out a little high — I can see the diabetic sleepiness in my eyes in an image taken on the way up — but with some of the best mountain views in Central Europe all around me, I didn’t really mind.

At the top there’s a little building where you can walk around outside and look down into Slovakia and also get tea and cake. I took a decent shot and prepared for the trip back down. But the cable car got stuck as soon as it left, and in the small enclosed space, packed with other tourists, we all dangled above the snowy mountainside for about an hour and a half. It was very unnerving, and by the time we made it down to the next leg, I was 308. All from stress. I took a corrective shot as we made it to ground level and rode a train to Koshitse.

Otherwise, things mostly worked well in Slovakia for my diabetes. Rather than high 200s and 300s, like I’d been having too often, I was generally below 200 which allowed me to better appreciate and enjoy the wooden churches of Kalné Roztoka, the sparse solitude of Humenné on a day off, and the charms of walled-in Levoča.

*** TRAVEL TO SLOVAKIA
Slovakia was a surprise. It has reliable infrastructure, all sorts of out-of-the-way places to check out, there is charm everywhere — well, almost everywhere — and great food, whether you are looking for excellent local cuisine or just some cheap backpacker fare.

If you go to Slovakia you’ll love it. Just be smart about diabetes, always know what’s happening with your blood sugars, and you’ll have an even better time.

I had a day to explore Bratislava, Slovakia. But my wander took an unexpected turn...

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is a result of doing all this myself I’m afraid. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday morning is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.
