Japan travel guide to what to do and eat in Miyajima, Hiroshima in a day!
Hiroshima is near the bottom of the main island Honshu and a must visit when coming to Hiroshima is the island Itsukushima, more popularly known as Miyajima. It’s one of Japan’s top 3 scenic sights, most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water.
Miyajima island is also a great place for a day trip from the Kansai region like Kyoto and Osaka but I would recommend staying in Hiroshima for a few days to explore Hiroshima city and another day for Miyajima island.
I started my trip off at Hiroshima station and took a 25 minute train ride to JR Miyajima-guchi station.
From there it’s less than a 5 minute walk to the ferry terminal where you will take a 10 minute ferry ride to go to Miyajima island.

Hiroshima is a city known world-wide for the tragic event that unfolded on August 6th, 1945. But I am here to tell you now, this city is so much more than that.
In today's video, we're spending the entire day exploring the beautiful city of Hiroshima. We dive into the history, as well as the things that make Hiroshima a can't-miss destination for anyone visiting Japan. If you are looking for a video highlighting the best things to do in Hiroshima then this video is for you!
We begin our day grabbing coffee at one of Hiroshima's best coffee spots before heading to the Hiroshima Memorial Museum. After learning & reflecting on the past, we shift our focus to the present with some amazing food in the most popular foodie area of Hiroshima, Okonomimura. After eating some delicious Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki, we walk things off in the Shukkeien Garden before exploring the grounds of Hiroshima Castle. Finally, we end our day by cheering on the Hiroshima Toyo Carp at Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium. A Hiroshima Toyo Carp game is a MUST if you're visiting Hiroshima during the summer months!

Hiroshima is a very important place to visit in Japan. Most people know that it was here that the first atomic bomb was dropped in WWII creating unimaginable devastation. Decades later, Hiroshima has now rebuilt and become a beacon of hope and education towards abolishing nuclear weapons. While of course the main reason to visit this city is to pay your respects to the victims of this tragedy and visit all the exhibits of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, there is also many other things to see and do. Welcome to Itsukushima Shrine, one of the most famous tourist attractions not only in Hiroshima but in Japan. The shrine complex is most famous for its dramatic torii gate built in water which appears to float during high tide. This is the time when this place is most picturesque. Pilgrims can access the gate during low tide. It was rebuilt 8 times since 1168 and the current one was completed in 1875. One of the most recognized landmarks in Horoshima is Peace Memorial Park commemorating the victims of the world's first nuclear attack. In this green island situated in the middle of the city you can find there not only the Children's Peace Monument but also Hiroshima Atomic Bomb dome. Situated close to the hypocenter of the nuclear bomb, it remained standing, and it has been left intact since then. For car enthusiasts there is Mazda Museum. You can admire present as well as past models of this car manufacturer based in Hiroshima. In Yamato museum you can see 1:10 scale replica of the battleship 'Yamato' as well as a real Mitsubishi Zero A6M fighter plane.
Hiroshima gardens attract thousands of visitors especially in spring and autumn. We recommend Shukkeien Garden which is the oldest Japanese Garden in the city and 5000 square-meters Hill of Hope Garden built of white marble that was excavated from a quarry in Carrara, Italy.
