Things to do in Tromsø during the Polar Night
We arrived in Tromsø during the first day of the Polar Night, where the sun never quite makes it above the horizon and you’re left with a couple hours of ‘twilight’ that gradually decrease each day!
Our first day of this 4-day mini holiday to northern Norway was spent exploring things to do in Tromsø during Winter, as for the rest of the trip we had some pretty exciting excursions planned that would take us out of the city (watch this space for some exciting vlogs!).
Our stops included crossing over the very cold and windy Tromsø Bridge to check out the Arctic Cathedral and have a walk around the mainland side of the city. We also checked out the Polaria aquarium, the northernmost aquarium in the world, and wandered to Tromsø southern beach in the evening (Telegrafbukta). Ah, we also built a snowman ⛄
There are a few other really fun things to do in the city itself which I’ll cover in another video, including various museums (we went to the Polar museum or Polarmuseet), checking out the stunning glass-encased library and getting the cable car to Fjellheisen Viewpoint.

Winter Wonderland: Tromso, Norway
If you are seeking an unusual city break at the top of the world - right on the edge of the Arctic - then this video is for you. This vlog shows my trip in early January 2020 to the Norwegian city of Tromsø - one of the largest cities in the Arctic Circle.
Perhaps one of the highlights of any Arctic trip is the possibility to see the aurora borealis or Northern Lights which is on many people’s bucket lists. Tromsø is the right place to see this natural phenomenon, although you also need a bit of luck (unfortunately I didn’t see them). During January there is not much daylight, but the city has a unique Winter Wonderland feeling. Indeed, Tromsø city centre contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest dating from 1789. Tromsø is also the cultural hub of the region. While there you can also get up close to some of the Arctic’s most famous residents; I decided to do an excursion to a reindeer farm and enjoy a Husky experience.

The packing list for winter in Norway:
1. net wool underwear
2. wool underwear
3. wool socks, a couple of pairs at least
4. downhill skiing trousers or any wind and water-resistant trousers
5. hiking boots with good ankle support and thick soles
6. wool insoles for extra insulation
7. fleece jacket
8. thick wool sweater
9. neck warmer or a good wool scarf
10. thick down jacket
11. shell jacket which is both wind and waterproof
12. wool beanie
13. wool gloves and wind and water-resistant gloves or mittens
14. light and practical rucksack, preferably 30 L

Tromsø, the northern capital of Norway and gateway to the Arctic. Set 350 kilometres above the Arctic Circle it is a springboard for experiencing some major bucket list items. For us, we witnessed the Northern lights in spectacular fashion, finally witnessed Orcas in real life and enjoyed some time with reindeers and the adrenaline rush of sledding with Huskies.
