There’s so much to see and do in the lush garden city of Al Ain, just an hour and a half from Abu Dhabi city. What’s there to see in Al Ain, you ask? Al Ain is a treasure chest of culture, heritage, greenery and adventure. Wander the expansive 4,000-year-old Al Ain Oasis, enjoy the unique Al Ain Camel Market, explore the historic Qasr Al Muwaiji fort, get sporty at Jebel Hafit Desert Park, meet animals at Al Ain Zoo and learn about heritage at Al Ain Palace Museum. A visit to Al Ain is a guaranteed adventure!

With its still-operational traditional falaj (ancient irrigation system) and meandering pathways shaded beneath a thick canopy of over 147,000 date palms and other fruit trees, Al Ain Oasis is the perfect place to bring family or friends to see what agriculture in this region has looked like for millennia. Al Ain Oasis has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. Covering 1,200 hectares, this lush oasis provides a unique insight into the region's inhabitants who began taming the desert 4,000 years ago. The water supplying the lush oasis comes from both wells and the ancient falaj system that taps distant underground or mountain aquifers and then delivers the water, sometimes over many kilometres, to farms via a system of ground-level and below-ground aqueducts.

Located on the western edge of Al Ain Oasis, Qasr Al Ain or Al Ain Palace is one of the best-reinstated forts in Abu Dhabi, and one of the best places to visit in Al Ain. It is an important historical site in the UAE and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bedouin-style architecture dates back to 1937, with the structure converted into a museum in 1998 as a key cultural and tourist attraction. The historic palace is a contrast of modern design elements and traditional Emirati influences.

The famous and family-friendly camel market in Al Ain is a wonderful, authentic cultural attraction. From young Arabian camels that might grow up to be racers to beautiful adult camels ideal for breeding, the market is a one-of-a-kind experience offering a closer look at the animal that enjoys a special place in Emirati heritage.

For more UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Al Ain, head to Jebel Hafit mountain, Abu Dhabi's largest peak. Here you will find more than 500 ancient tombs, known as the Jebel Hafit Tombs. This is one of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi, and one of the best things to do in Al Ain. You’ll be able to see the incredible Jebel Hafit Tombs on a guided hike through the area.

Occupying a nine-kilometre stretch at the base of the craggy Jebel Hafit mountain, visitors can also explore the family-friendly Jebel Hafit Desert Park’s majestic natural surroundings on a mountain bike, horse or camel and discover fascinating archaeological and historical remains that tell enchanting stories of this unique area’s ancient habitation. In 2011, UNESCO recognised the Jebel Hafit Desert Park area as being a vital component of the World Heritage Site of Al Ain, the UAE’s first World Heritage Site.

If you’re a history buff, you have to get to the incredible city of Al Ain, about an hour and a half away from Abu Dhabi city. Al Ain is the UAE’s first World Heritage Site and is home to a 4,000-year-old oasis, 5,000-year-old tombs and the Hili Archaeological Park. Come to Al Ain for rich discovery and adventure!
Hili Archaeological Park combines both a public garden and an impressive archaeological site, making it a popular place for international visitors and residents.

The site not only provides the earliest known evidence of an agricultural village in the United Arab Emirates but also contains other Bronze Age and Iron Age villages, burial grounds, forts and agricultural infrastructure. The early agricultural village is located at Hili Site 8 and dates to 3000BCE. Artefacts from these sites can be seen in Al Ain National Museum.

In the period between 2500BCE and 2000BCE, the settlement at Hili expanded. This period is called the Umm an-Nar period after the island off the coast of Abu Dhabi where the remains of this culture were first found. The largest collection of tombs and buildings from this period in the UAE is located at Hili. A number of these Bronze Age structures, located within the Hili Archaeological Park, are open to the public.

The park’s centrepiece is the Hili Grand Tomb, dating to about 2000BCE. Built in a circular form with a diameter of up to 12 metres, and approximately 4 metres high, the tomb was used to bury people from surrounding settlements. The tomb has two entrances decorated with beautifully engraved reliefs portraying human and animal figurines.

You’ll find Hili near Fossil Valley, an area rich in a variety of fossils dating back many thousands of years to when it was covered by the sea.

Even if you’re not staying in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, once you’ve had a look at things to do in Dubai or elsewhere in the United Arab Emirates on your UAE trip, come and experience what Abu Dhabi and Al Ain have to offer.

Al Jimi Oasis | Explore historic culture in Al Ain | Visit Abu Dhabi

Go back in time when you visit the incredible Al Jimi Oasis located in Abu Dhabi’s lush, garden city of Al Ain.

Read more below, but in the meantime, SUBSCRIBE for top travel tips and insider info on the Visit Abu Dhabi channel:

Al Ain is Abu Dhabi’s second largest city. The name ‘Al Ain’ means ‘the spring’ in Arabic. It is called the garden city because of its vast expanses of lush greenness. Al Ain is home to the famous Al Ain Oasis (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Al Ain Palace Museum, Jebel Hafeet mountain, the Al Ain Zoo, the famous Al Ain Camel Market, Jebel Hafeet Desert Park (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the historic Qasr Al Muwaiji fort, the Jebel Hafeet Tombs as well as the beautiful Al Qattara Oasis and Al Jimi Oasis.
The Al Jimi Oasis combines a lush palm oasis with indigenous trees, traditional falaj irrigation system and 300-year-old buildings, promising to take you back in time and offer some incredible photo opportunities. The oasis sits in an agricultural area with a thick cover of palm trees and is also home to mosques and heavily fortified houses that speak to the agricultural and administrative importance of the oasis from the early 1700s onwards.
There are more than a dozen restored buildings in the oasis, including forts and watchtowers that were built in part to protect the falaj, which primarily uses below-ground canals to bring water from distant aquifers to the oasis’s palm plantations, fields and gardens. The oasis sits in a sunken basin that is divided into a series of palm gardens. In addition to palm trees, fruit trees grow under the palm canopy, with native trees like sidr and ghaf cultivated for medicinal properties. In the past, fields around the outer edge of the oasis were used for winter cereal crops, and beyond that was a zone for animals to forage.
Among the most important structures in the oasis is the nearly 300-year-old fortified residence of Sheikh Ahmad bin Hilal Al Dhaheri, representative of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa, who ruled Abu Dhabi from 1855 to 1909. The house provides a fine example of a residential fort built to protect the oasis, the falaj and the farms and houses that fell under Sheikh Al Dhaheri’s jurisdiction. In addition to the many gun openings in its perimeter wall, the home’s defences were augmented by two watchtowers. Approximately 25 rooms in the house provided storage and accommodation for family, guests, servants and guards. Its simple design and construction characterise the architecture of the time.
Located to the south of Al Jimi Oasis is the round Al Jimi Watchtower, built by Sheikh Ahmad Bin Hilal Al Dhaheri in the second half of the 19th century. The tower is approximately six metres in diameter and 14 metres tall, gradually narrowing towards the top. There are no windows on the ground floor and the tower is accessed only from a single narrow doorway. It served to protect the ‘shareea of the falaj’, the point where the water supply comes to the surface and is accessed for drinking and irrigation.
Planning a UAE trip? If Dubai is on your list of places to visit, we highly recommend coming to explore Abu Dhabi after you’ve soaked up all the Dubai tourist attractions!
