Where are The Longest Bridges In Southeast Asia? - Interesting Asia

The longest bridges in Southeast Asia are a diverse bunch. For starters, several happen to be elevated roads or tollways which isn’t exactly the first type of bridge that springs to mind. While some are architecturally stunning, others were designed, how do we put this nicely, to focus on functionality.

Many of the longest bridges in Southeast Asia are new which obviously coincides with the region’s rapid development. Only one was opened before 2000 and quite a few were completed during the past few years.

As for this list, we are focusing on car bridges. While there are several rail bridges in Southeast Asia that would qualify here, these aren’t particularly memorable. They tend to be really long, public transit structures, such as the Airport Rail Link line in Bangkok.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the longest bridges in Southeast Asia.

Agas-Agas Bridge in Southern Leyte // The TALLEST Bridge in the Philippines

The Agas-Agas Bridge is a prestressed concrete beam bridge on the Pan-Philippine Highway. The ₱1.024-billion bridge was funded partially by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. With a length of about 350 meters (1,150 feet) and a height of 292 feet (89 meters) above ground,[2] the center span of the structure measures 177 meters (581 feet) in length supported by two piers measuring 241 foot (73 meters) and 246 foot (75 meters) from the ground.[3]

The mountainous Agas-Agas section of the Pan-Philippine Highway in Southern Leyte is prone to landslides during heavy rains, much more when a typhoon strikes the province. The bridge was constructed in 2006 to avoid the troublesome section and cut down the driving time for motorists.[4]

Seeing its high tourism potential the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) submitted to President Gloria Arroyo the plan to turn the bridge into a haven for enthusiasts of bungee jumping, paramotor, downhill skateboarding, zip-line, rappelling and other extreme sports. On August 9, 2009, the president signed the construction of the bungee jumping platform along the bridge as well as other tourism amenities.

Landmark Bridge in Isabela // One of the Longest Bridge in the Philippines

THE 720-lineal meter bridge across Cagayan River, connecting the towns of Sta. Maria and Cabagan in Isabela province, is expected to be completed by 2019 with construction now under way, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The P639.6-million bridge project will replace the existing Cabagan-Sta. Maria overflow bridge that is usually impassable during heavy rains. DPWH, in a statement, said the new bridge is seen to significantly reduce travel time to the Cordillera Administrative Region and benefit about 2,751 motorists per day with the connection of the Santiago-Tuguegarao Road and the Cagayan Valley Road (Daang Maharlika).

Southeast Asia's Longest Bridge

The Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge
Soon to be Southeast Asia's Longest Bridge

The Bataan–Cavite Interlink Bridge, also known as the Manila Bay Bridge is a proposed bridge which plans to connect the provinces of Bataan and Cavite.

Then-Representative Felicito Payumo first proposed the construction of a bridge crossing Manila Bay in 1987, which he named as the Trans Manila Bay Crossing.

As chairman of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority or SBMA, Payumo attempted to realize the Trans Manila Bay Crossing as a bridge–tunnel system in the early 2000s. At least two Japanese firms, Itochu Corp. and NKK presented feasibility studies for the bridge–tunnel link to the SBMA but such plans were never realized.

In 2016, Payumo revived the proposal again, pitching the bridge as means to decongest traffic in Metro Manila and boost the economy. Comparing the proposed bridge to the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, Payumo has noted that commuters in Cavite and other parts of Southern Luzon do not need to pass through Metro Manila to reach Central Luzon if such bridge would be built.

China State Construction Engineering Corporation or CSCEC began its onsite study as preparation for the possible construction of the bridge in late 2017. Its team first visited the coastal towns in Bataan.

The National Economic and Development Authority or NEDA approved the bridge project in early 2020 with a budget of ₱175.7 billion. The implementation of the bridge project is projected to last six years.

On October 2020, the Department of Public Works and Highways signed a $59 million engineering design contract, awarded to the joint venture of T. Y. Lin International from the US and Korea's Pyunghwa Engineering Consultants Ltd., who are working in tandem with Geneva-based Renardet S.A. and local firm DCCD Engineering Corporation

The Bataan–Cavite Interlink Bridge will be 32.15 kilometers (19.98 mi) long and will cross over the Manila Bay. The four-lane bridge will connect the towns of Mariveles, Bataan and Naic, Cavite. The bridge will consist of two main navigation bridges.

The starting point will be located in Barangay Alas-asin near the Mariveles Freeport Area, then 2 cable-stayed bridges called the North Channel Bridge (main span of 400 meters) and South Channel Bridge (main span of 900 meters) will be constructed, before terminating in Barangay Timalan Balsahan, Naic, Cavite, with the marine bridges standing in water as deep as 50 meters. The Detailed Design Engineering Phase of the project is expected to last 15 months.

The bridge will need to be high enough to allow large ships to pass under it since Manila Bay is a major shipping route accommodated by the Port of Manila.
