Ljubljana
One of the best things to do in Slovenia is to explore the Old Town in Ljubljana. Whether you’ve never visited the place before or you can’t keep away, you’ll always stumble upon something new and interesting in Ljubljana Old Town.
The historic beating heart of Slovenia, Ljubljana Old Town is where you’ll find meandering canals which work their way under rustic stone bridges, picturesque homes next to Gothic cathedrals, and charming plazas lined with open-air cafes.
Lake Bohinj
Lake Bohinj is one of the best places in Slovenia to try out different water sports and find out which is the one for you. Kranjska Gora is an attractive mountain and tourist sports centre throughout the year. In the winter it sees Alpine skiers compete and top ski jumpers break new records at the near-by Planica. Cyclists endeavour to conquer the highest Slovenian mountain pass, and hikers can stop by many points of interest.
Postojna Cave
Postojna Cave is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world's largest karst monuments. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, the astonishing diversity of Karst features as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors. Vintgar Gorge
Vintgar Gorge, carved by Radovna River, is located near Gorje, approximately 4 kilometres north-west from Bled. The 1.6-kilometre long gorge is carved amidst the glorious vertical walls of Hom and Boršt hills, and it is highlighted by the Radovna River and its waterfalls, pools and rapids.

So, welcome to Ljubljana!
Between Venice and Vienna, the picturesque city of Ljubljana is one of the smallest European capitals.
It’s never crowded – but also never boring since in the city you can find:
- a historical and architectural heritage
- many food surprises to discover
- an exciting mix of different cultural traditions
- and a hub from which to start your biking and hiking tours
Here below are the 10 main attractions of Ljubljana from my point of view!
1/10: Ljubljana Castle
Built in the 11th century, the castle is the main attraction of the city. From here you can get the most beautiful views of the old town.
2/10: The Triple Bridge
The architect Plečnik had a major impact on the modern architecture of Vienna and Prague, and the Triple Bridge, here in Ljubljana, is one of his most famous works.
3/10: Dragon Bridge
The dragon is a symbol of Ljubljana since the late Middle Ages, and this sculpture remarks the connection between the city and the scary animal.
4/10: Tivoli Park
If you want to escape to nature from the center, visit Tivoli Park: the main green area of the city, which goes down from Rožnik hill with so a lot of walking paths.
5/10: Central Market
Also the Central Market was designed by Plečnik, and here you can have a meal and socialize more easily with the locals.
6/10: Prešernov Square with the Franciscan Church
Prešernov Square is the heart of the historic city center. Here you can find the pink façade of the Franciscan Church, which is probably the most iconic image of Ljubljana.
7/10: Italian food market (Italijanska tržnica) on Friday
Not because I wanted to feel at home, but the Italian market is enjoyable to have a snack dancing to the music beat.
8/10: Get lost along the streets of the old town
9/10: Metelkova
Metelkova mesto, an alternative culture center that developed from a squat in a former army barracks and became one of the best-known attractions of Ljubljana.
10/10: Park Špica
It is one of my favorite place in Ljubljana, to relax after a long tourist walk!
SECONDARY ATTRACTIONS
These are the attractions I liked the most about Ljubljana. Other secondary places of interest to me, are: The Cathedral (Church of St. Nicholas), the Town Hall (built in the late 15th century), and The Cukrarna Gallery (a modern exhibition space).
FOOD TIPS
We ate very well in Slovenia and here you’ll find some tips to taste:
- Filana Paprika: stuffed pepper with mashed potatoes
- Try Slovenian pork!
- Prekmurska gibanica: poppyseeds, walnut cream, apple filling
AROUND LJUBLJANA
If you can spend more days in Slovenia, you can be based in Ljubljana to visit many nearby attractions.
- Bike to the Koseze Pond, 4,5 km (2,8 miles).
- And consider that to take a hiking trip Ljubljana is one of the greenest cities in the world: visit Velika Planina, just over 1 hour by car.
- Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle (40 minutes by car).
- Maribor, just over 1 hour by car.
WHY VISIT LJUBLJANA
So, why spend one day or one week visiting Ljubljana?
Medieval streets like Prague, large palaces like Vienna, extraordinary squares like in Italy.
In my opinion, you should come here if you love history and architecture, food, relax and nature.

10 Things to do in Ljubljana, Slovenia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Prešeren Square is a central meeting spot in the heart of the Old Town, so it made sense to start our tour of Ljubljana here. You’ll find the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, lots of gelato shops, and the baffling bridge we just mentioned.
As for the reasoning behind the Triple Bridge and the famed dragon bridge, which is guarded by four dragons.
Ljubljana’s Central Market is another spot worth checking out.
We needed to sample some Slovenian food so we went to Allegria.
Sam ordered Zlikrofi (zhlee-krofi), a Slovenian dumpling stuffed with potato + lamb goulash along with Slovenian sausage with cabbage & potatoes.
Ljubljana Castle, which sits on Castle Hill overlooking the city. Built as a medieval fortress in the 11th century, Ljubljana Castle has seen many redesigns and renovations. Climb the Outlook Tower for 360 degree views of the city.
There are departures for cruises down the Ljubljanica. We boarded a cruise directly underneath the Love Lock Bridge, which is actually called Mesarski Most. It was our favourite activity in Ljubljana and it was a super relaxed way to watch the city.
Metelkova is home to the best street art.
One place we really enjoyed was Sarajevo 84, a restaurant specializing in Balkan cuisine. The portions massive & everything we ordered was delicious.
We had a feast featuring: grilled meat with pita and onions, baked beans and sausage, roasted peppers, and a flaky pastry stuffed with cheese. It only came to 23 Euros.
Speaking of galleries and museums, a few you’ll find include: the National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Slovenia.
We finished off at Tivoli, which is the largest park in Ljubljana.
And that’s it for our time in Ljubljana. Our visit was short, tasty, and relaxing, and we’re really glad we made some time to visit this underrated capital.

Se volete trascorrere qualche giorno fuori porta in una meta relativamente low cost vi consigliamo la Slovenia. Abbiamo iniziato il nostro road trip (di 3 giorni) al lago di Bled, ci siamo spostati di qualche km alla gola di Vintgar, guidato ancora più a Sud in direzione della capitale della Slovenia: Lubiana, e concluso il viaggio alle grotte di Postumia. La Slovenia è una meta, secondo noi, non ancora presa d'assalto dai turisti con dei paesaggi e una natura strepitosi.

It is located some 55 km north of Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, not far from the border with Austria, at the foot of the Julian Alps. It is distinguished by a mild, healing climate and thermal springs of lake water. The lake is 2,120 m long and 1,380 m wide, it has a maximum depth of 30.6 m. Nearby is Triglav National Park and other mountains in the Julian Alps and Karavanke. Lake Bled is a photographer’s paradise and a wonderful destination for anyone that loves nature. One day in Lake Bled is just enough time to see all of Bled's top sights, try some local food and take up one of the many activities around the lake.

Ad agosto siamo partiti per iniziare un lungo viaggio on the road tra Slovenia e Croazia e la nostra prima tappa è stata Lubiana che è la nostra 16° capitale Europea visitata.
Abbiamo trovato uno splendido appartamento poco fuori da Lubiana e poi ci siamo mossi in auto e noleggiando monopattini elettrici! Lubiana è stata sicuramente una delle capitali Europee più belle visitate, molto vivibile e piena di vita pur rimanendo tranquilla.
Cosa vedere:
- La biblioteca di Lubiana: imponente, si sviluppa su 4 piani ed è aperta solo a luglio ed agosto ed è visitabile per soli 5€, imperdibile la grande sala di lettura.
- Il castello di Lubiana: raggiungibile a piedi facendo una discreta salita, con un trenino oppure in funicolare. Il castello domina dall’alto tutta la città.
- La chiesa di San Nicola: rappresenta uno dei migliori esempi di arte barocca in Slovenia e domina il cuore del centro città con i suoi colori pastellati.
- Parco Tivoli: oltre 500 ettari di verde alle porte della città (con tanti parcheggi peraltro gratuiti) dove poter lasciare l’auto e visitare Lubiana a piedi. Questo è il posto ideale per passeggiare, fare sport o incontrarsi, nonché volare con il vostro drone!
- Triplo Ponte: di fronte alla chiesa di San Nicola, c’è un ponte che si sviluppa su 3 vie e prende di conseguenza il nome di Triplice Ponte o Triplo.
- Il Ponte dei Draghi: costruito nel 1900 per onorare i 40 anni di regno dell’imperatore Francesco Giuseppe I. Quattro draghi alati sorvegliano il ponte ad arco.
- Piazza Civica: Mestni Trg è la Piazza della Città, cuore del centro antico di Lubiana. Gli eleganti edifici costruiti dopo il terremoto del 1511 decorano la piazza e le donano un aspetto fortemente barocco.
