Top 10 Tips for Driving In Iceland

Driving in Iceland // 10 Things to Know

Driving in Iceland was such a pleasure, because the Ring Road is full of waterfalls, mountain ranges, fjords, and other stunning scenery.
That said, there are a lot of things I wish I'd known before renting a car!
You can check out my complete guide at:

Here's a breakdown:
1. Only a few rental car companies have service right at the airport. For many, you'll have to wait for a shuttle to pick you up to go to their off-site location.
2. Bring a debit card with a pin for gas, since many gas stations don't take credit cards. Also, be sure to put a travel alert on your card to make sure it works.
3. Signage is good on the Ring Road,
4. The Ring Road is paved nicely, and has very little traffic.
5. Watch out for farm animals and wildlife.
6. Bridges narrow to one lane on the Ring Road.
7. Be prepared for snow on mountain passes most months of the year.
8. Use Road.is for road conditions any time of year.
9. The speed limit tops out at 90 km per hour.
10. We only saw one person pulled over by police, but watch for photo radar traps.

This video is primarily geared toward renting a car, rather than the camper vans which are very popular among tourists.

Transcript:

Getting around Iceland on your own is surprisingly straight-forward. The main Ring Road connects all the major towns and if you stick to it, you can’t really go wrong. Now bear in mind that driving here is nothing like driving at home so there are a few things you need to know…

Summer is the time to do a driving holiday, as the roads will be open and the conditions will be good with lots of daylight. The weather in Winter can make driving difficult and once you leave Reykjavik it can get quite dangerous. It’s not recommended unless you really know what you’re doing; getting stuck in a white-out isn’t fun.

If you plan on straying off the Ring Road, then hire a four wheel drive car. the roads can be uneven and pot-holes are common. Do not go on F Roads, as hire cars are not allowed on them. Off-road driving is forbidden as it damages the environment. You’ll get fined around 350,000 Krona if caught. Speed limits: 50km in populated areas, 80km on gravel roads and 90km on paved roads. You’re required to have your headlights on at all times when driving, even during daylight. Some bridges are single lane only; the driver closest to the bridge has priority.

Petrol stations are few and far between and often unmanned. Fill up when you can and use a credit or cash card for payment. The Icelandic website road.is has lots of detailed information on driving in Iceland, so make sure to give it a read before you hire a car. And remember - you drive on the right!

10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO ICELAND

Today we share 10 things to know before you go to Iceland including when to visit Iceland, things to know before you visit Iceland and where to go in Iceland. We also share both what to pack for Iceland Summer and what to pack for Iceland Winter. We give some Iceland budget travel tips, things to do in Iceland and general Iceland travel tips to help those planning a trip to Iceland.

Iceland has so much to offer visitors who love gorgeous landscapes and unique travel experiences. However, there are a few things you need to know before you go.

1. When to visit - When to visit Iceland is always the big question. Summer brings somewhat slightly warmer weather and longer days whilst Winter is perfect for the Northern Lights. Ideally, we recommend you visit from June to August to make the most out of the Midnight Sun and longer days. However, if you are set on seeing the Northern lights, make sure you visit in February, March, September and October. It is worth noting that the northern lights are not visible in the Summer months.
2. Always pack thermals or wool - No matter when you visit, you will need layers, thermals and/or wool. Iceland is cold, especially if you are visiting the Highlands or South Coast.
3. Limited daylight - Visiting in Winter brings its own type of magic but you need to plan your trip carefully. Daylight is very limited in the winter months - with darkness for almost 20 hours a day on the shortest days of the year. You are much more likely to see the Northern Lights during this time but just plan your days carefully
4. Bring a sleep mask - So Winter is dark but the summer is bright! The midnight sun should not be taken lightly; it shines almost all night so pack a sleep mask to be able to sleep. Most hotels have black-out drapes but it is worth bring those eye masks just incase!
5. Book everything in advance - Iceland is incredibly popular but also very limited in the way of restaurants, tours and hotels. Book everything in advance, even restaurant reservations.
6. Make sure you visit Reykjavik - The capital is charismatic and quirky, definitely a place you should visit during your trip. It is a great idea to use the city as a base then travel out to the sights each day.

Top 10 Tips for Driving In Iceland

I couldn't bare to delete these beautiful dash cam shots of Iceland without putting together some kind of montage. I threw in some helpful hints and tips to help you along the way too.

Having a car in Iceland was a great freedom and helped us break free from the bore of the tour -and save some money too! We hired our Suzuki Jimny from Geysir via CarDelMar and I would highly recommend their services.
