10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO ICELAND

Today we share 10 things to know before you go to Iceland including when to visit Iceland, things to know before you visit Iceland and where to go in Iceland. We also share both what to pack for Iceland Summer and what to pack for Iceland Winter. We give some Iceland budget travel tips, things to do in Iceland and general Iceland travel tips to help those planning a trip to Iceland.

Iceland has so much to offer visitors who love gorgeous landscapes and unique travel experiences. However, there are a few things you need to know before you go.

1. When to visit - When to visit Iceland is always the big question. Summer brings somewhat slightly warmer weather and longer days whilst Winter is perfect for the Northern Lights. Ideally, we recommend you visit from June to August to make the most out of the Midnight Sun and longer days. However, if you are set on seeing the Northern lights, make sure you visit in February, March, September and October. It is worth noting that the northern lights are not visible in the Summer months.
2. Always pack thermals or wool - No matter when you visit, you will need layers, thermals and/or wool. Iceland is cold, especially if you are visiting the Highlands or South Coast.
3. Limited daylight - Visiting in Winter brings its own type of magic but you need to plan your trip carefully. Daylight is very limited in the winter months - with darkness for almost 20 hours a day on the shortest days of the year. You are much more likely to see the Northern Lights during this time but just plan your days carefully
4. Bring a sleep mask - So Winter is dark but the summer is bright! The midnight sun should not be taken lightly; it shines almost all night so pack a sleep mask to be able to sleep. Most hotels have black-out drapes but it is worth bring those eye masks just incase!
5. Book everything in advance - Iceland is incredibly popular but also very limited in the way of restaurants, tours and hotels. Book everything in advance, even restaurant reservations.
6. Make sure you visit Reykjavik - The capital is charismatic and quirky, definitely a place you should visit during your trip. It is a great idea to use the city as a base then travel out to the sights each day.

- ABOUT US -
Hi! We are Pooja & Shravan, an illustrator-engineer duo from Bangalore brought together by the love of travel and adventure.

We have traveled together since the winter of 2016. On one such trip, we started documenting these travels on a humble phone camera. We soon realised that we really enjoy capturing these experiences. We are entirely self taught (students of the internet) and have learnt from binging on brilliant creators over the years.

In our videos you might find glimpses of places that are not spoken about enough. We always vouch for spots that are somewhat the underdogs. Our vlogs are sometimes vlog-ish and sometimes a documentation of the place as we see it. We hope that watching these videos will bring a little dose of joy to your day.

We love reading your comments and hearing your thoughts.
They motivate us and help us steer our creative path.

With love,
Pooja & Shravan

Planning on traveling to Iceland? Don't go until you watch this video on everything you need to know about my favorite country to visit in the world! Driving in Iceland // 10 Things to Know

Driving in Iceland was such a pleasure, because the Ring Road is full of waterfalls, mountain ranges, fjords, and other stunning scenery.
That said, there are a lot of things I wish I'd known before renting a car!
You can check out my complete guide at:

Here's a breakdown:
1. Only a few rental car companies have service right at the airport. For many, you'll have to wait for a shuttle to pick you up to go to their off-site location.
2. Bring a debit card with a pin for gas, since many gas stations don't take credit cards. Also, be sure to put a travel alert on your card to make sure it works.
3. Signage is good on the Ring Road,
4. The Ring Road is paved nicely, and has very little traffic.
5. Watch out for farm animals and wildlife.
6. Bridges narrow to one lane on the Ring Road.
7. Be prepared for snow on mountain passes most months of the year.
8. Use Road.is for road conditions any time of year.
9. The speed limit tops out at 90 km per hour.
10. We only saw one person pulled over by police, but watch for photo radar traps.

This video is primarily geared toward renting a car, rather than the camper vans which are very popular among tourists.

Top 7 Things To do in Iceland - Budget Travelers

Dru and I's 2nd destination on our European Summer Tour - Iceland! We had heard so many great things about this Northern country that we had to check it out. We visited our friend Astor and got a local's perspective. It was briskly cold and rainy but still very beautiful. The craziest thing was that it was never fully dark outside so it felt like the days never ended. What a beautiful country, overall, we hope to visit Iceland again! Here are some notes below from our travels and a 'Budget list' for those interested in traveling to Iceland on the cheap.

Talks of the best things of Iceland! - People in Iceland are open minded, no judgements, come as you are.The Iceland scenery - beautiful place for photographers

ICELAND ON A BUDGET

1. Try 1 Icelandic beer at the one of the local pubs $12
2. Walk around everywhere! - Free
3. Tea and Coffee - buy a coffee, get a refill free - $5
4. Buy food at the local Kronar grocery store - fun candies, try things you would not have tried before.
5. Go to a local swimming pool / spa $12 (Alternative to Blue Lagoon )
6. Rent a car to go to see the Golden Circle or far off Iceland locations to see puffins.
7. Window shopping - try the clothes on, take a picture!

ICELAND JOURNAL

Day 1 - Red eye flight on WOW airlines, arriving 10am Saturday July 7th. Crisp cold air, burrr! Ran into our LA friend Vitali, “come with me, I rented a car, lets go adventure!” Driving half awake to Reikivick, jet lag. Arrival at Icelandic friend Astor’s place. Cat nap, sleepy dreams of travels, time warp. Local Iceland bar hopping, new friends! Icelandic beer. Great conversations, “its still bright outside! “ - 11pm. “Lets drive the golden circle - midnight to 3am. - Seeing the 4 national park areas, gulfas waterfall is the best! We can see everything because it never gets fully dark.

Day 2 - Cozy sleep in the early morning to afternoon. Walking around downtown, Icelandic fashions! Bell tower church, super cool crazy architecture. Astor cooks us a local meal - Haddock - Breaded local fish with potatoes. Yum! Late nights chats with Kjartan, Astor’s roommate - How the Tourism industry has boomed in the last 5 years due to the economic crisis and the volcano in 2010 that stirred up news. The local Icelandic people, population is only 300K for the entire country, so very spread out. Before Tourism, the main industries were fish and aluminum. The tourism industry is now declining, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.

Day 3- 10am start, working remotely on some new projects. Astor picks us up in the gray line bus to bus terminal. Bus to airport to pick up our rental car! Blue Lagoon, we made it! Hangin' with the #princeofromance, our friend and guide. Thanks Kjartan :) Headed towards the southern coastline in search for puffins. 4 hours drive later past beautiful waterfalls we spot the magnificent creatures at 11pm at night :-b Last night in Iceland, wish we could stay longer.
