The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror opened on June 22, 1994 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (called Disney-MGM Studios at the time.) More than just your average amusement park drop-ride, this immersive experience takes you deep into another dimension where a computer controls your fate, deciding how many times you will fall 13 stories straight down.

At 199 feet it is the second tallest attraction at Walt Disney World, (Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom beats it by half a foot). Disney doesn’t build anything taller in Florida because regulations require a flashing red light on the top of any structure 200 feet or taller.

Tower of Terror Lights On - Walt Disney World

Take a ride on the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Walt Disney World with lights on and NO sound effects!

Video taken by John Cumbo!

Making of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Disney's Hollywood Studios

Behind the scenes look at the making of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios (Disney MGM Studios).

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, also known as Tower of Terror, is an accelerated drop tower dark ride located at Disney's Hollywood Studios, Tokyo DisneySea, Walt Disney Studios Park, and formerly located at Disney California Adventure Park. Except for the Tokyo DisneySea version, the attractions are inspired by Rod Serling's anthology television series, The Twilight Zone, and take place in the fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel in Hollywood, California. The Tokyo version, which features an original storyline not related to The Twilight Zone, takes place in the fictional Hotel Hightower. All three versions place riders in a seemingly ordinary hotel elevator and present the riders with a fictional backstory in which people have mysteriously disappeared from the elevator under the influence of some supernatural element many years previously.

The original version of the attraction opened at Disney's Hollywood Studios (Disney MGM Studios Theme Park) at Walt Disney World in July 1994 and was the basis of the 1997 television film of the same name, several scenes of which were shot at the attraction. A decade later, Disney began plans to add similar versions of the attraction to their newest parks at the Disneyland Resort in California, Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan, and Disneyland Paris. In California and Paris, Disney sought to use the popular attraction to boost attendance at the respective resorts' struggling new theme parks. The California and Tokyo versions of Tower of Terror opened in 2004 and 2006, respectively, while financial problems delayed the opening of the Paris version until 2007. The California version closed in January 2017.

The Tower of Terror buildings are among the tallest structures found at their respective Disney resorts. At 199 feet (60.7 m), the Florida version is the second tallest attraction at the Walt Disney World Resort, with only Expedition Everest being taller by 0.5 feet (0.2 m) at 199.5 feet (60.8 m). At the Disneyland Resort, the 199-foot (60.7 m) structure (which now houses Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!) is the tallest building at the resort, as well as one of the tallest buildings in Anaheim. At Disneyland Paris, it is the second tallest attraction.

Preshow script spoke by Rod Sterling:
You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and imagination. You've just crossed over to... The Twilight Zone.

Hollywood, 1939. Amid the glitz and the glitter of a bustling movie town at the height of its golden age, the Hollywood Tower Hotel was a star in its own right, a beacon for the show business elite. Now, something is about to happen that will change all that.

The time is now, on an evening very much like the one we have just witnessed. Tonight's story of The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a maintenance service elevator, still in operation, waiting for you. We invite you if you dare to step aboard because in tonight's episode, you are the star, and this elevator travels directly to...the Twilight Zone.

My Hollywood Studios Theory: Goodbye Tower of Terror

I'm taking a break from the normal history video today to talk about a theory I have. I want to be very clear: this is just a theory. I'm not basing any of this on rumors or leaks or any privileged information. I believe we're in the middle of seeing Disney run a litmus test in other parks to see if it would be worth building a Marvel land in Disney's Hollywood Studios.

In the past, particularly during the Michael Eisner era of the company, Disney was not afraid to partner with outside creators and companies to bring attractions to the parks. We saw attractions based on Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and the Muppets. We had a whole theme park named after another movie studio featuring among others, a ride based on a bunch of non-Disney owned films. Many of these attractions even became considered classics despite being built upon intellectual property, otherwise known as IP, that wasn't Disney owned.

Disney eventually purchased the Muppets, making that a Disney IP. Under Iger we saw Disney purchase LucasFilm which made Indiana Jones and Star Wars become Disney IP as well. Then in a departure from that, Pandora opened, introducing two new attractions based on Avatar, another non-Disney IP.

So we were left with six attractions, all anchored to brands and IP Disney didn't own. Then whaddya know, it's announced that The Great Movie ride is being replaced by a Mickey and Minnie attraction and would you look at that, Ellen is also going to be replaced, this time for a Guardians of the Galaxy ride. Less than a year later it's announced that Disney is planning to acquire 20th Century Fox and along with it, the Avatar property.

Assuming that deal closes, we're now left with just two remaining attractions. The Tower of Terror, based on The Twilight Zone, and Rock n Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith. Now to me, it seems clear that through acquisition or otherwise, Disney is looking to rid their parks of attractions based on properties they don't own.

We've already seen California's Tower of Terror rethemed into a Guardians of the Galaxy ride, and now we've just learned that Paris' Rock n Roller Coaster is going to be re-themed to an Iron Man attraction, both, coincidentally, Marvel rides. I think we're possibly going to see the same happen to Florida's Rock n Roller Coaster and that we're also going to see the remaining Tower of Terrors also get a Marvel retheme. It helps that Florida's Rock n Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror are right next to each other. It would allow Disney to throw the Beauty and the Beast show into the mix and redo the entire corner of the park into a Marvel land that could serve to match California Adventure's rumored upcoming Marvel Land. I believe these two initial rethemes in California and Paris are the litmus test Disney is performing before they pull the trigger.

Now, many will point out or have already commented that a contract between Disney and Universal currently prevents Disney from using a good number of Marvel characters in their Florida parks. However contracts like that can be bought out or renegotiated as long as the price is right and Universal is willing to play ball. With the current Fox deal in the works, Disney is about to step into a whole new library of IP that they can potentially use as a bargaining chip.

Now another point worth noting is that technically they don't need Universal to play ball for them to retheme The Tower of Terror. We're already getting an Epcot Guardians ride so clearly the Guardians fall outside of Universal's contract. So why not re-theme it now? This is true, but I believe Disney would see the benefit of retheming that whole corner of the park at once into a Marvel land rather than just changing the Tower and risk it being the lone Marvel ride at the end of Sunset Blvd in the event they couldn’t get the rights to use the other characters.

I also think they’re performing this slower litmus test because at the moment with Toy Story land and Star Wars land still in the works, not to mention everything planned for Disney World’s 50th anniversary, they know that any possible Marvel Land and re-theme would be years out from now. They have time on their side.

In any case, even if I’m completely wrong about the Marvel/Universal stuff, I think looking at the history of Disney’s third-party IP attractions paints a pretty clear picture. I think regardless of what they’re re-themed to, both Rock and Roller Coaster and the Tower of Terror are next on the chopping block once Star Wars land opens and the park can risk to lose two E-ticket attractions.
