8 Reasons Why Americans LEAVE Costa Rica [Why I Left]

The TRUTH about living in Costa Rica: Why do so many Americans leave Costa Rica after moving there? In this video, I explain what causes expats to change their minds about retiring abroad and why I left Costa Rica after 8 years. Some of the initial reasons that people want to move to Costa Rica include the moderate climate, laid back lifestyle, fresh and healthy food, friendly people, beaches, medical tourism, and the low cost of living. But is Costa Rica really a safe and friendly country or is it actually dangerous and expensive? Once they arrive, many people realize that living in Costa Rica wasn't quite what they expected. Unfortunately, that results in people returning home quite soon after arriving.

After helping more than 500 foreigners move to Costa Rica and living there for eight years, this video explains the top reasons why people move back to the USA and why I left, too, so that you know more about what to expect BEFORE you get there. This is the real and sometimes dark truth about living in Costa Rica. What do you think are the biggest pros and cons of living in Costa Rica? Let us know in the comments.

Which Month To Visit Costa Rica? | Weather in Costa Rica!

Summary
I hate it when I hear about the dry season rainy season concept in Costa Rica. Any month is a great month to visit. 70% of tourism is concentrated in the Christmas to Easter period, but Costa Rica is a year round destination. My observations are for the Guanacaste area, as you go South it gets wetter and wetter, but broadly the same pattern. Caribbean side is completely different
1. JanuaryFebruaryMarch
Perfect sunny weather every day, no rain, breeze from the Papagayo winds makes this idyllic 86F 30C every day. As you get toward Easter everything is very dry and the grass a bit brown.
2. April/May
The Papagayo winds die off, first week after Easter we start to get rain. The first time it rains after 4 months everyone comes out into the street to feel it. It is very special. The flora goes from brown/yellow to lush green after a couple of weeks. It becomes more humid. Typically sunny hot days, cloud/rain later afternoon
3. June/July/August
Costa Rica has its mini summer that the gringos don't know about. This is a great time to visit. The humidity is less, everything
is still very green because it is still raining some afternoons.
4. September/October
This is the rainy season. It tends to be humid, no breeze. We still get sunny mornings, but afternoons and evenings you can plan on hard rain. Rain like you have never seen before. Sometimes the roads flood, even to chest height sometimes, but then within an hour all the water dispurses. There will be tropical depressions where you don't see the sun for a week.
5. November
Sometimes the rains carry on into November, which is a transition month to summer. I love it at this time and the snow birds start to arrive and you definitely feel that summer is on the way
6. December
This is my favorite month, not many gringos this time of year, but weather is perfect, everything is lush. Ideal sunny dry weather

Top 10 Reasons I LOVE Costa Rica! Reason #9 Episode 2

Hi folks, this is Joseph Emanuelli from Tres Amigos Realty Group, Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
Here is reason #9 from Top 10 Reasons I LOVE living Costa Rica! Today I am standing in a store called Los Cartagos, which is a produce store. The vegetables here in Costa Rica are just incredible, this store has so many options you can choose from and its all fresh! Behind me right now, you can see there are all sorts of different potatoes, plantains, yucca, green bananas. You've got different types of fruits and vegetables. Coming over this way you can see there are tomatoes, butternut squash.. the variety is incredible.
If you are thinking about fresh produce and the availability of good foods to buy, this is one of the reasons I love living in Costa Rica. The produce is truly fresh and they change it out daily and its really good and the prices are great. You can go to the average grocery store but they tend to be a bit more expensive. But being right here, at a store that sells strictly produce, you have a much better option.
As you can see behind me there are some bananas and folks shopping. Way back over in the corner is the refrigerator section. The refrigerator section has your lettuces, cucumbers, things like that. The quality is great. Well if you're thinking I really like my apples from Washington State well guess what? We have those over there in the refrigerator! Besides this store, there is actually another one right down the street. I am going to take a walk over there and we are going to take a look at that one. It is not as organized as this one but it is still a very nice store. So when you think about Costa Rica, think about all the wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables you will encounter here. It is definitely one of my top 10 reasons of loving living in Costa Rica. Lets go down the street!
So we made it down the street! I am in front of Feria del Agricultor El Coco. This is another fresh produce market. It is an open air market. There are plenty of different types of fruits and veggies that you can choose from. The variety of produce is just phenomenal! Back over there you can see that you have refrigerated stuff. Here is a beautiful fresh pineapple. Here is a mamon chino, you may know it as a rambutan. They are in season right now and all over the place. They're delicious! I love these! They are actually one of my favorite fruits and I even wrote a blog about them (
So when you are thinking about Costa Rica and you are thinking about all the wonderful things that make life great here, think about our fantastic produce!

Top 10 Reasons I LOVE Costa Rica! Reason #10 Episode 1

Hello this is Joseph Emanuelli, managing broker of Tres Amigos Realty Group in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
I have decided to do a Top 10 list of Why I Love Costa Rica and Living in the Papagayo Region. Enjoy the first episode and stay tuned for more!
Lets start off with #10 and work our way down.
My number 10 reason I love living in Costa Rica is that it is not densely populated. Right here in the Guanacaste province, we have roughly 400,000 people. There are 7 provinces in the entire country.
The Guanacaste area is roughly 3,900 square miles. Basically a 100 people per square mile. You may think that is a lot of people but in reality the people are all congregated in the little towns, such a Playa Hermosa, Playa del Coco, Ocotal, or Liberia which is the capital of Guanacaste. Liberia has over a 100,000 people residing in it. Averages can be a bit deceiving.
What I really love is that I am not stuck behind traffic. Since I am originally from New York City, I am really over traffic and over population.
Here it is just beautiful and there are not that many folks here. There is enough that you will feel a sense of community but you don't feel crammed in. This is one of the main reasons I love living in this part of Costa Rica.
Now if you go to the Central Valley of Costa Rica, the whole country has roughly 5.1 millions people and the Central Valley which encompasses many towns and cities is where the Capital of San Jose is. Most folks live there. There are 4 million people in the metropolitan area. So it is quite congested there.
Here in Guanacaste, at the beaches, we have plenty of space. I see plenty of people but I dont need to worry about being stuck in a traffic jam. Here a traffic jam is being stuck while you wait for a herd of cows or goats to cross the road.
This is a very laid back area. If you are looking for a place that is not over populated, then this northern area, Guanacaste, may be right for you! Enough to do, enough services, but not over blown and out of proportion and feeling crammed in. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about relocating or real estate, I am happy to assist you!
