MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE TOP 9 THINGS TO SEE

Top 9 things to see and do in Maputo - Mozambique's capital city.
Maputo is a port city and the capital of Mozambique. It lies along the north bank of Espírito Santo estuary of Delagoa Bay, an inlet of the Indian Ocean. The town developed around a Portuguese fortress completed in 1787. Mozambique - a former colony of Portugal achieved independence in 1975. Following independence, Mozambique was torn by internal conflict as the Marxist government, supported in part by the Soviet Union and Cuba, battled anticommunist forces funded by South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for control of the country. Marked by countless acts of terror, the ensuing warfare displaced over four million people and resulted in the death of perhaps a million more as a result of the violence, famine, and disease it engendered. The horrible conflict formally ended in 1992.
Take my tour of the top things to see in Maputo.

We stayed here:

Hello, Tofo! We find ourselves in the Inhambane Province of Mozambique.

No seashell will be left unturned during our stay. Join us in this series as we show you around this incredible coastal town!

What a beaut! Praia do Tofo (Tofo Beach) is absolutely pristine. Tofo is situated 500km north of Maputo in southeastern Mozambique and about 23km from Inhambane City.
Tofo's international draw card is its blend of culture, nightlife & sealife!

The Tofo experience would not be complete without extensively supporting the local food market on a daily basis. This part of Tofo is seldom ever publicised.

Fresh produce, fish & local delicacies are available here in abundance. Not only does this allow us to immerse ourselves in the local way of life but also sustain our own healthy way of life.

Tofo is well-known for its large curved beach. It's extensive white sandy shores make it an ideal beach to relax.

Beautiful beachfront accommodation and the main market border this stunning beach.

Crystal clear & unbelievable warm gentle waters is what makes Tofo Beach one of the best swimming beaches we have ever seen.

During this time of the year, water temperatures average 26°C. Apparently in February water temperatures rise beyond 27°C. We will however settle for the 26°C waters this time with outside temperatures having a real feel of 38°C.

A Mozambique trip would not be complete without seafood. We gorged on a different type of fish almost every single day. Sourcing our fish from the fishermen at the market made this possible.

When lazing on the beach, we would notice colourful wooden fishing boats being pulled in by local fishermen after which some sort of fish trading would take place. Back at our accommodation, we would hear a gentleman on a loud hailer on the back of a truck advertising his catches of the day in a cooler box.

1.5km south of Tofo Beach is Tofinho Beach. Tofinho is a residential area and Tofinho Beach is a short stroll from the main beach around or over the sand dune.

It's less of a swimming beach but just as scenic. It's worth a walk to take in the full stretch of coastline.

The sun has now set on our Tofo trip! At sunset, Tofo Beach is lit up in the most beautiful golden brown hue!

We took time to appreciate the little piece of paradise we have been lucky to experience and thank the incredible people of Tofo for welcoming us with open arms.

Top 10 Mozambique Cities By Population

Mozambique has a rich and diverse population history shaped by various factors, including migration, colonialism, and independence. Here's an overview of the population history of Mozambique:

Pre-colonial Era: Prior to European colonization, the region that is now Mozambique was inhabited by various Bantu-speaking ethnic groups, such as the Makua, Tsonga, Shona, and Yao, among others. These groups had their own distinct cultures, languages, and social structures. The exact population figures for this period are uncertain.

Colonial Period: Mozambique came under Portuguese colonial rule in the late 15th century when Portuguese explorers arrived in the region. The Portuguese established trading posts and later expanded their control inland. During this period, the Portuguese introduced forced labor practices and displaced many indigenous communities. The population also experienced significant demographic changes due to the Atlantic slave trade, as Mozambique served as a major source of slaves.

Independence and Post-Independence: Mozambique gained independence from Portugal on June 25, 1975. Following independence, the country faced a civil war between the Marxist-Leninist government of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) and the rebel group known as the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO). The civil war lasted for nearly 16 years and resulted in massive population displacement, economic devastation, and loss of life.

In recent decades, Mozambique has made significant progress in rebuilding its economy and infrastructure. The population has been steadily increasing, driven by natural growth, improved healthcare, and declining mortality rates. According to the World Bank, Mozambique's population was estimated to be around 32.6 million people in 2020.

It's important to note that population figures can vary depending on the source and the time of estimation. Official census data and statistical reports provide the most accurate and up-to-date information on population trends in Mozambique.
