SUMMARY:
- There are two official languages in the Philippines: Filipino (based on Tagalog) and English.
- The Philippines are number five on the list of the world’s top English speaking populations after U.S., India, Pakistan, and the U.K.
- The nation’s capital, Manila, and its 16 surrounding cities that make up Metro Manila area have a population of 12.8 million people.
- Shopping malls aren’t merely a place where you buy stuff for Filipinos. They are safe, air-conditioned community hubs with gyms, health clinics, concert halls, nightclubs, parks and even churches inside!
- Filipinos send about 400 million texts a day, and that’s around 142 billion texts a year. It’s more than the U.S. and Europe put together.
- If you visit Manila, you’ll notice some interesting looking vehicles called jeepneys. They are converted US army jeeps that stayed in the country after World War II.
- The Philippines are, without a doubt, a super scenic location. Among all of the islands that are part of it, Camiguin sure stands out, with more volcanoes per square mile than any other island on the planet.
- The national flag of the Philippines has two bands of blue and scarlet, and a white triangle at the hoist with a yellow sun with eight rays, each of them standing for one province of the country.
- Filipinos love boxing and are crazy about their most famous boxer Manny Pacquiao. Whenever he fights, the whole country is glued to its TV sets.
- Banaue rice terraces are the oldest in the world and were so smartly designed, they still bring a harvest of rice and vegetables, most of which get exported.
- For years, the Philippines had been the number one producer of coconuts in the world. And even though the leadership now belongs to Indonesia, 153,532,000 tons per year is still an impressive number.
- Ferdinand Magellan made the first record of the archipelago among the Europeans in 1521. He founded the first settlement in Cebu and thus most of the area became a Spanish colony.
- If you love to sing along, you ought to thank Filipinos for your favorite pastime! The first karaoke machine in the world was created in 1975 by Roberto del Rosario.
- Along with their love for boxing, texting, and shopping, Filipinos are crazy about beauty pageants. They have won in all the major international pageants 15 times.

Philippines: Discover The Filipino Culture and Traditions.

The Philippines has kept its cultural heritage alive despite a long history of colonization. Locals are proud of their traditions and strive to maintain them. Filipino culture is increasingly being overshadowed by foreign influences as technology and innovation spread. Filipinos have a wonderful ability to accept novel concepts and incorporate them into their own culture. They possess a resilience that allows them to quickly and easily adapt to emerging trends, pop culture, and ideas from different countries or timelines.

Despite the influx of foreign trends and pop cultures, Filipinos still put their own culture and traditions on top priority. They remain loyal to their roots and uplift each other's culture as well. In the Philippines, individuals are often well-equipped to deal with calamities mentally and emotionally, no matter how damaging they may be. They prepare for worst-case scenarios and are aware of what the calamity could bring ahead of time.

TAGALOG : How To Speak It ? | Philippines Language

#Tagalog #Philippines #Filipiino #Language #anthropology

Kumustaka my fellow Anthronaut. I’m your traveling anthropologist Mark Thomas. Now, we begin a new series, where China meets the Philippines. Let’s start off with their national language…
But first, we have Breaking Knews:
What is the origin of the word ‘Tagalog’?
We’ll tag an answer to this question at the end of this video.
As we are hinting at, the language spoken my most speakers in the Philippines is in an Austronesian language centered in the Northern state of Luzon, called Tagalog. It begins with a Malay influence using a beautiful script called Babayin. Later on, in the 16th century, Spain colonizes the Philippines with their Latin-based alphabet, while producing a creole language called Chabacano. The end of the 19th century brings to it the United States of America with their English language. This occupation is interrupted during World War II’s Japanese invasion. The Philippines finally gains its independence from the USA on July 4th, 1946, and their language is eventually known as Filipino based primarily on Tagalog. Due to this earlier history, you’ll hear those foreign influences in native speakers’ conversations, especially in Metro Manila. In fact, Tagalog speakers often use a form called Taglish, which like Spanglish, imports a lot of English words.
Naturally, to have the best time in the Philippines, you’ll want to know at least some basic Tagalog words, and my Filipino friend, Rob is here to help you out with that…
{ }

Salamat po, Rob! As you can hear, Tagalog is a rich and vibrant language that will help you to build your Filipino friendships...
Now, back to our Breaking KNEWS:
We asked, what is the origin of the word ‘Tagalog’?
The answer is, it’s a combination of the words tagá- which means “from” and –ilog for “river”. So, Tagálog translates as “River Dweller”…

If you enjoyed learning Tagalog, please LIKE, COMMENT, and SHARE this video, and then learn even more words at my blog ANTHRONAUTS.com.
In our next episode we will learn another Chinese dialect...
Xie Xie, and Salamat po, we’ll see you time, I’m Mark Thomas for Anthronauts…Whoeeyawa!
