Sweden is an expensive country to visit, and Stockholm is the most expensive city in Sweden. This is a list of the top 10 completely free things to do in Stockholm!
Stockholm has gorgeous nature, an exciting history dating back to the 1200s, and lots of free culture to explore. In this list I'm including a wide range of experiences, for all seasons, and for all kinds of visitors.
The places included in this list are:
- Visit Östermalmshallen, a lovely food market
- Explore the island of Långholmen, which used to be a prison island
- Attend open sessions at Parliament - or just enjoy the view
- Kungsträdgården has events and shows and lots of things to enjoy - all for free
- The island of Royal Djurgården is gorgeous. Don't miss the Rosendal Castle!
- See the world's longest art gallery...in the form of the Stockholm subway art
- Check out all the free museums at Skeppsholmen, such as the Museum of Modern Art. Or just walk around and see all the historical boats anchored here
- Marvel at the 18th century Drottningholm Castle and its surrounding garden
- Pay a visit to the Medieval Museum...without paying anything at all
- And finally, find out all there is to see in Stockholm Old Town. Such as Sweden's smallest public monument, or Sweden's oldest public toilet

I've already covered the top 10 free things to do in Stockholm, but in this video I list the top 10 things to do for less than €30 when you're visiting the capital of Sweden!
Sweden is expensive, and Stockholm is the most expensive city in the country. But that doesn't mean that everything costs a fortune. I've selected the top 10 things to do if you want to stay on a small budget. This list includes:
- Java Whiskers, Sweden's first cat cafe
- Haga Butterfly Ocean (Fjärilshuset), where you can see a thousand free-flying butterflies
- Visit the Royal Castle, the official residence of the King of Sweden
- A trip to Sigtuna, Sweden's oldest town, just north of Stockholm
- Retro gaming and arcades at N3rds Bar and HEY STHLM
- Rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board to see Stockholm from a different perspective
- Museums! There are tons of great museums in the city, and these are some of my top picks
- The ICEBAR, the world's first permanent ice bar
- Skansen is the world's oldest open-air museum as well as a zoo, and its well worth a visit
- Finally, a trip to the archipelago is a must if you're visiting Stockholm
All of these things can be done for less than €30, or 300 Swedish crowns. I also list a number of honorable mentions that are not included for various reasons. In some cases because they aren't specific to Stockholm - and in some cases because you can just barely find a ticket for €30 on the very cheapest of days. Those honorable mentions include, for example, the Gröna Lund amusement park and escape rooms.

Gothenburg is Sweden's second biggest city, and it's known to be a fun and vibrant place to visit. It's also quite expensive. Not as expensive as Stockholm...but it's not far off.
The things shown or mentioned in this video include:
- Enjoy the nature in Gothenburg, for example at Trädgårdsföreningen, Slottsskogen or the Botanical Gardens
- Get a free boat ride on Älvsnabbare
- Marvel at the street art in Gothenburg
- Do some old-fashioned sightseeing, along the parade street Avenyn, at Götaplatsen, and at Feskekörka
- Admire the churches of Gothenburg, for example the Cathedral, the Haga Church, and the Masthugg Church
- Visit Gratisbutiken, the Free Store, in Majorna
- Enjoy a concert at Ullevi Stadium...or at least, enjoy the sound of it...
- Go to some of the free museums in the city, like the Gothenburg Art Gallery or the Museum of Natural History

Top 10 WINTER Things To Do in Stockholm | December to March
Stockholm is a beautiful city in the summer, but many people want to experience it in winter as well. What is there to do in Stockholm in winter?
In this video I present the top 10 things to do if you're visiting Stockholm between December and March. Snow is not guaranteed, but it will definitely be cold, so make sure you dress appropriately for the season!
The things listed, including the various places I mention, are the following:
- Ice skating in Kungsträdgården, a very centrally located park
- Skiing at Hammarbybacken, which you can reach by tram from Gullmarsplan
- Check out the viewpoint at Monteliusvägen, on Södermalm. You can walk there from Slussen. Also, I mention Skinnarviksberget - it lies a 10 minute walk to the west of Monteliusvägen
- Rent a sauna and take an icy plunge at Hellasgården. Website:
- Winter kayaking at Vaxholm. Website:
- Walk in one of the many parks in Stockholm. This video shows you clips from Rålambshovsparken and Kronobergsparken, and I mention Vasaparken, Humlegården, Tantolunden and Royal Djurgården as well
- Swedish fika is a great thing on a cold winter's day! Especially if you're here around semla season. I'm showing you the centrally located cafe Vete-Katten. Website:
- Warming up at a spa is highly recommended. The places I mention include Centralbadet, The Nest, Selma City Spa and Yasuragi
- A tour to the archipelago in winter. The two biggest boat companies are Waxholmsbolaget ( and Strömma (
- Finally, I of course have to recommend visiting Stockholm around Christmas time! In the video I mention Christmas markets at Gamla stan and Skansen, as well as animatronic displays outside of the NK shopping centre. The hardest part of planning your trip will be choosing which activities to participate in and which to skip. One good place to start taking in Stockholm is Norrmalm. It is actually one of the best things to do in the region. Norrmalm has a reputation for being a retail hub in the city. However, don't worry yourself sick if retail therapy isn't your thing. The neighborhood of Norrmalm is perfect for a stroll with an ice cream cone in hand. In the spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the setting is particularly picturesque.
Another of the best things to do in Stockholm is to dine around the city. While bread and fish figure prominently in many traditional Swedish recipes, there are also a number of uniquely Swedish foods that have become favorites among Swedes. Stockholm is the 12th safest city in the world, but that doesn't mean that there aren't things to watch out for. In this video I tell you about scams to avoid when you're visiting the capital of Sweden!
You're not going to find a huge list of scams to watch out for, but that also means that you might be lulled into thinking that everything is safe in Stockholm. You always have to use common sense, keep an eye out for things that look out of place, and keep an eye on your belongings.
In this video I cover the following topics, among others:
- Taxi scams that unfortunately are completely legal in Sweden
- ATM credit card sniffing
- Pickpocketing and what to look out for in bars in general
- Illegal games on the street corners of Old Town (Gamla stan)
- Overpriced shops and restaurants
- The picture taking scam
- Scams within the housing market in Stockholm
I also discuss a bit of a sensitive topic, when it comes to the beggars that have become quite prevalent in Sweden lately.
But I also take some time to go through things that are sometimes listed as scams online, that absolutely should not be classified as scams. These include, for example, the Vasa musem, the Arlanda Express train and Gröna lund, a boardwalk amusement park.
