A Tourist's Guide to Nuku'alofa, Tonga
Part 5 of my South Pacific Trip.
After a night in an airport hotel in Fiji, I jet off to the Kingdom of Tonga. The capital, Nuku'alofa is a sleepy town with a fair smattering of palm trees, foraging pigs and piglets and plenty of (friendly) stray dogs. There's also some big fruit bats.
My full day in Tonga happened to be a Sunday, a day where everything closes except for the churches. So I visit one and listen to some singing before catching a ferry over to Pangaimotu Island.

1. Tonga, officially Kingdom of Tonga, Tongan Fakatuʿi ʿo Tonga, also called Friendly Islands, country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It consists of some 170 islands divided into three main island groups: Tongatapu in the south, Haʿapai in the centre, and Vavaʿu in the north. Watch the whole video for more information. Located in Oceania, Tonga is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, directly south of Samoa and about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand.
2. Tonga is a constitutional monarchy. It is the only remaining Indigenous monarchy in the Pacific islands. Tonga has a tropical rainforest climate. Tonga contains the Tongan tropical moist forests terrestrial ecoregion.
3. Tonga's economy is characterised by a large non-monetary sector and a heavy dependence on remittances from the half of the country's population who live abroad.
The tourist industry is relatively undeveloped; however, the government recognises that tourism can play a major role in economic development, and efforts are being made to increase this source of revenue. Cruise ships often stop in Vavaʻu, which has a reputation for its whale watching, game fishing, surfing, beaches and is increasingly becoming a major player in the South Pacific tourism market.
4. In Tonga, agriculture and forestry (together with fisheries) provide the majority of employment, foreign exchange earnings and food. Energy in Tonga mostly comes from imported diesel.
Tonga's postage stamps, which feature colourful and often unusual designs (including heart-shaped and banana-shaped stamps), are popular with philatelists around the world. The Tongan language is the official language, along with English. Tonga does not have an official state religion. The Constitution of Tonga (Revised 1998) provides for freedom of religion.
5. Tonga has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. Primary education between ages 6 and 14 is compulsory and free in state schools.
6. Humans have lived in Tonga for nearly 3,000 years, since settlement in late Lapita times. Contemporary Tongans often have strong ties to overseas lands.
