We started our trip in the Keihanshin region, which is Japan's second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo, made up of the cities Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, and other smaller ones. After eight days around this region, we hopped on the Shinkansen bullet train twice, first to Hiroshima and then to Fukuoka. From there, we took a boat to Busan, South Korea (we were SO excited about this ferry ride between Japan and Korea!) before catching a train to Seoul and flying home from there!

Thank you for watching!????????

I took a Shinkansen train to Hiroshima, Japan from Kyoto with Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass)

If you are traveling to Hiroshima with a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass), you can take a Hikari Shinkansen Train and make a transfer at Shin-Osaka Station to take a Sakura Shinkansen Train to Hiroshima Station. This should take about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The Hikari train from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka Station takes about 15 minutes and the Sakura train from Shin-Osaka Station to Hiroshima Station takes about an hour and a half.

Keep in mind that the Hikari Shinkansen Train comes from Tokyo so if you are traveling from Tokyo to Hiroshima with a JR Pass, then you can take a Hikari Shinkansen Train and make a transfer at Shin-Osaka Station to take a Sakura Shinkansen Train to Hiroshima Station

You should be careful not to take Nozomi shinkansen trains as these trains are not covered by the JR pass. Nozomi services are more regular, and quicker, and run straight to Hiroshima without a transfer. However, this will only save you about 15 minutes.

From Hiroshima Station, Take Tram 6 or 2 and get off at Genbaku Dome-Mae Station to get to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome. The JR Pass does not cover the trams in Hiroshima. You can use a prepaid IC card such as Suica or Pasmo to pay for the tram rides.

Limited Express Thunderbird :

The Limited Express Thunderbird trains are a popular and well-known rail service in Japan. Operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West), the Thunderbird trains connect Osaka and Kyoto with the Hokuriku region, which includes destinations such as Kanazawa and Toyama.
The Thunderbird trains are named after the thunderbird, a legendary creature in Native American folklore associated with power and speed. True to their name, these trains are known for their speed, efficiency, and comfort, making them a preferred mode of transportation for both local commuters and tourists exploring the scenic Hokuriku region.

The Thunderbird trains offer a seamless and enjoyable travel experience, with their sleek design and modern amenities. Passengers can relax in spacious and comfortable seating, equipped with ample legroom and well-designed interiors. The large windows provide panoramic views of the passing landscapes, allowing passengers to admire the natural beauty of Japan's countryside.
One of the notable features of the Thunderbird trains is the Green Car, a class of premium seating that offers enhanced comfort and luxury. Green Car passengers can enjoy wider seats, extra legroom, and a more exclusive and tranquil atmosphere. This upgraded class also provides services like complimentary beverages, reading materials, and attentive staff, ensuring a delightful journey.
The Thunderbird trains are equipped with modern technology and amenities, including free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and storage space for luggage, enhancing the overall convenience and comfort of the journey.

Nozomi N700S Shinkansen / Bullet Trains:

The Nozomi Shinkansen N700 series is a high-speed train operated by the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines in Japan. It is one of the fastest and most advanced bullet trains in the world, capable of reaching speeds of up to 362 kilometers per hour (225 miles per hour).
The N700 series was first introduced in 2007, and since then, it has become a popular choice for travelers in Japan due to its speed, comfort, and reliability. The train features state-of-the-art technology and design, including a streamlined nose and a lightweight body that reduces air resistance and improves efficiency.
One of the most notable features of the N700 series is its tilting mechanism, which allows the train to navigate curves at high speeds without causing discomfort for passengers. The train's active suspension system also helps to reduce vibration and noise, making for a smoother and more comfortable ride.
Inside the train, the N700 series features spacious and comfortable seating, with plenty of legroom and storage space. The seats are also equipped with power outlets and individual reading lights, as well as adjustable headrests and armrests.
The train also has a range of amenities, including vending machines, toilets, and Wi-Fi, allowing passengers to stay connected and comfortable throughout their journey. Additionally, there is a small smoking room located at the end of each car for passengers who wish to smoke.
The Nozomi Shinkansen N700 series operates between Tokyo and Hakata, making stops at major cities such as Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka. While it is the fastest and most direct train on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines, it is also the most expensive. However, many travellers consider the extra cost worth it for the speed and comfort that the N700 series provides.

Miyajima Island:

Miyajima Island, also known as Itsukushima Island, is a small, picturesque island located in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, just off the coast of Hiroshima. It is renowned for its natural beauty, historical significance, and the iconic Itsukushima Shrine.
One of the island's most famous landmarks is the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The shrine is known for its stunning Torii Gate, which appears to float on the water during high tide. This iconic sight is one of the most photographed spots in Japan and is considered one of the country's three most scenic views.

Exploring Miyajima Island allows visitors to experience a blend of natural wonders and cultural heritage. The island is covered with lush forests and scenic hiking trails, providing opportunities for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Interacting with the friendly and tame deer that roam freely on the island is another highlight. These deer have become a beloved symbol of Miyajima and are considered sacred in the Shinto religion.
Miyajima Island can be easily reached from Hiroshima by taking a short ferry ride.

Taking the Shinkansen, or Japanese bullet train, from Tokyo to Hokkaido is an experience that perfectly encapsulates Japan's blend of meticulous service, technological innovation, and serene beauty. This journey is not just about reaching a destination; it's about embracing an integral part of modern Japanese culture and enjoying the unparalleled efficiency and comfort for which the Shinkansen is world-renowned.

Boarding and Departure: The punctuality of the Shinkansen is legendary; the train departs precisely on time, so it's advisable to arrive at the station with a few minutes to spare.

Speed and Comfort: As the train glides out of the station, the acceleration is swift but incredibly smooth. The Shinkansen can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h (198 mph), making it one of the fastest ways to travel on land. Despite the high speed, the ride is remarkably quiet and stable, with minimal vibration, allowing passengers to relax.

Scenic Views: The journey from Tokyo to Hokkaido offers changing landscapes that capture the essence of Japan's diverse geography. As the train races north, urban panoramas give way to rural serenity, with views of lush fields, rugged mountains, and the iconic Mount Fuji on clear days. The transition through the Seikan Tunnel, the world's longest and deepest operational rail tunnel, marks the passage to Hokkaido, where the scenery shifts to the northern island's unique natural beauty.

Unique Features of the Shinkansen
Eki-ben (Station Bento Boxes): A delightful part of the Shinkansen experience is the variety of eki-ben or station bento boxes available for purchase at the stations or on the train. These meticulously prepared meals offer a taste of regional cuisine, making them a culinary adventure in their own right.

Green Cars (First Class) and Ordinary Cars: The Shinkansen offers various classes of service, with Green Cars providing more spacious seating, enhanced comfort, and added amenities. Ordinary cars, while more economical, still offer a high level of comfort and cleanliness that exceeds expectations.

Technology and Safety: The Shinkansen's safety record is impeccable, thanks to advanced technology and rigorous maintenance. Features like earthquake early-warning systems and automatic braking ensure passenger safety in a country prone to seismic activity.

Reserved and Non-Reserved Seating: Passengers can choose between reserved seating, which guarantees a specific seat, and non-reserved seating, which is on a first-come, first-served basis. For popular routes or during peak travel times, reserving a seat is recommended.

Hospitality: The service on the Shinkansen is exemplary, with attendants offering snacks, drinks, and even local delicacies. The cleanliness of the train, including the restrooms, is maintained to the highest standards, reflecting the Japanese dedication to hospitality and service.

Taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hokkaido is more than just a high-speed train ride; it's an immersive experience that reflects the harmony between Japan's technological prowess and its commitment to tradition and service. It offers a unique window into the country's culture, landscapes, and the art of travel itself.

Is Japan JR Rail Green Car worth it? (First Class) - Hikari Shinkansen - Tokyo to Hiroshima

Take a peek inside the JR Rail Green Car (First Class) on the Hikari Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima (via Shin-Osaka).

If you have a JR Rail pass, the Hikari Shinkansen (bullet train) will likely be one of the trains you will take traveling to western Japan from Tokyo. You can upgrade your JR Rail pass to a Green Car pass, which allows you to make reservations for the spacious Green Car on any shinkansen that offers them.

Most long range bullet train trips will have a green car (or a few) to choose from. However, to ride the Green Car on a shinkansen using your JR rail pass, you must first reserve tickets at a JR rail pass station. This is easy to do, it makes boarding the train actually more convenient vs ordinary cars, and there is no extra cost (besides the cost of the initial Green Car upgrade), but it's just an extra step you should be aware of.

Smaller local trains may not have a Green Car at all. An example of this is the local train from Hiroshima to Okunoshima, aka Rabbit Island... no Green Car there. In this case, your JR Rail Green Car pass will still allow you to ride the train, but in a regular seat.

So, if you ever wondered about the Japan Rail Green Car vs ordinary, and if it is worth it, let this help with your decision!

I used JTBUSA.com to purchase my JR Rail Green Car pass, and I used Hyperdia.com to plan my routes. Check them out if you're planning to travel to Japan!
