South Luangwa - Time & Tide Chinzombo

Puku Ridge - Wilderness Refined - Luxurious tented safari lodge in the South Luangwa National Park

Newly renovated with no aspect left unattended to, the upgraded Puku Ridge luxury safari lodge llends style and comfort seamlessly with nature. From the elegant architectural lines to the thoughtfully outfitted game viewing vehicles and the perfectly-positioned photographic hide in front of the camp’s private watering hole.

Located well inside the incredible South Luangwa National Park with an outlook onto a private floodplain and watering hole, this remote and elevated landscape framed is enriched by the rolling gait of giraffe, the heart-shaped nose of the puku, and the midnight whoop of the hyena.

A collaboration between its new owners, Chichele Safaris, and the Cumings Family of Chiawa Camp & Old Mondoro – the reimagined Puku Ridge is situated on one of the Park’s prime sites.

The well-known and much loved facilities, service and guiding have been upgraded to the highest of standards that the Cumings Family’s own Lower Zambezi safari camps have become renowned. Unique in design but traditional in outlook, it has been completely rebuilt with a lighter footprint.

Elements from the Luangwa bush camps of old have been combined with traditional village life and authentic, local art works complement crucial creature comforts making for one of the most appealing and welcome safari camp launches for many years.

Previous guests of the old Puku Ridge will feel that everything has changed, but nothing has changed, as many special touches from the past have been retained.

Chiawa Camp - The Pioneer and premier luxury safari camp of the Lower Zambezi National Park

THE SOUL THAT CHIAWA SAFARIS IS BUILT ON.

The family owned and operated, multi-award-winning Chiawa Camp, is the pioneer of the Lower Zambezi National Park, the first camp to settle along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Zambia’s premier luxury safari camp, Chiawa is a gentle and unhurried experience for both wildlife and guests, while still offering up a diverse range of activities. From game drives to heart-stopping game walks as well as canoeing, boating and angling – all in the company of Africa’s finest guides.

Each of the luxury tents boast spectacular views over the Zambezi River and its vast array of resident wildlife. Elephant, lion, leopard, hippo and much more, occupy this gorgeous region of Zambia.

The creative culinary team at the Chiawa Camp ensure meals are of the highest standard, from seasonal menus developed and enhanced over time.

Along with Chiawa’s renowned dedication to its guests, staff, local communities and conservation, allow yourself to share in Chiawa’s passion, so that you can enjoy one of Africa’s finest safari camps and the wildlife adventure of a lifetime.

In the Soli language, Chiawa means ‘The one who shares’ – an appropriate name for such a camp that honours the local people and their traiditions.

The Lower Zambezi National Park, by virtue of the Zambezi River and its parallel escarpment, is one of Africa’s most scenic wildernesses, home to an impressive quantity and variety of wildlife that can be viewed not only on the more usual land-based Lower Zambezi activities, but also on a variety of water-based activities, and in the camps themselves.

In comparison to typical African safaris, the Lower Zambezi safari experience is unique: more remote, more exclusive, and experiential in nature. While both guests and guides require more patience with regards to game viewing, the results are often outstanding.

Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro are located in the middle of prime wildlife and habitat zones of the Lower Zambezi National Park, so we usually do not have to travel far to see wildlife. What’s more, often wildlife make their way into camp to visit us, providing out-of-this-world game sightings. Wildlife to be spotted includes elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, waterbuck, hippos and crocodiles.

Explore the safari activities below, all of which are included your unforgettable stay at Chiawa Camp and/or Old Mondoro.

[TRAILER] Zambia, Part 1: African Safari at South Luangwa National Park

Get a quick glimpse into the beginning of your ultimate wildlife adventure through Zambia with a bucket-list safari at South Luangwa National Park. From brunch and sundowners with your feet in the river to a walking safari in search of big cats, this adventure had it all. How many of the Big 5 can we see? Tune in now to find out.

ZAMBIA - From South Luangwa to the Lower Zambezi // EP.48

We are exploring some of the most beautiful wilderness in Zambia, visiting the South Luangwa National Park, and canoeing down the mighty Zambezi river.

We visit our first Safari in Africa with our own Land Rover Defender (self-drive safari). It is one of the wildest Parks in Africa and a delight as there are few visitors. We are visiting in the wet season, so it is a bit more difficult to spot animals due to the tall vegetation. But the main advantage is that we get to see the cute offspring, all the baby animals that were born weeks prior.

At the peak of the day as it gets hot the animals retrieve to the shadow, deep in the park so it is difficult to find them. We decide is a good moment to try other paths. The ranger told us it is still too wet to drive out of the main gravel path, but we still want to give it a go. We try all the paths first before the Prado attempts them, but all of them are too challenging. So much that we get our Defender stuck in the mud.

We leave the Luangwa river behind and cross the country, literally to get to our next destination. The meeting point between the Kafue and the Zambezi rivers. We are going to canoe down the Zambezi for 30km, Kayaking between hippos and crocodiles. It is a thrilling experience, and a beautiful way of being in nature, without disturbing it.

A one in a lifetime experience.

Enjoy The Ride!

More about this unforgettable African safari:

Which National Parks will I visit in Zambia?

Lower Zambezi National Park
Located on the Zimbabwean border in the southern reaches of Zambia, the Lower Zambezi region is best known as the home to the Lower Zambezi National Park which features exceptional, undeveloped wildlife areas. It is renowned for its abundant game - hippos, buffalo, crocodiles, fish eagles, and herds of elephants can be spotted, among other species. The landscape is characterised by rugged, unspoilt wilderness of vast floodplains, scattered with indigenous woodlands. Visitors can look forward to an array of wonderful activities along the Zambezi including game drives, walking safaris, canoe trips, and excellent tiger fishing.

South Luangwa National Park
Bordering the Luangwa River, the northern and southern Luangwa National Parks contain some of the most breathtaking and untouched wilderness in Africa. As a result of this and the parks’ successful anti-poaching campaigns, the area has developed into a world-renowned wildlife haven. The South Luangwa National Park is renowned for its walking safari, which allows visitors to view elephant, hippo and even lion close-up..

Where will I stay?

Chiawa Camp
Family-owned and operated, Chiawa Camp offers unpretentious luxury, warm hospitality in the iconic Lower Zambezi National Park. Consisting of just nine tents on elevated timber decks with spacious verandas looking out across the Zambezi River, each is equipped with ball-and-claw bath and indoor and outdoor showers. Our main area consists of a thatched living area with an upstairs viewing platform and a dining area with an al fresco deck. We also boast a riverside fire place and a plunge pool with surrounding sun deck. A wonderful addition to our camp is the huge elephant bulls that have become regular visitors in camp.

Old Mondoro Camp
Owned and operated by the Cumings family of Chiawa Camp, Old Mondoro is set in the pristine Lower Zambezi National Park. Our aim is to provide you with an authentic, intimate safari that focuses on wildlife and the bush, whilst not forgoing any creature comforts or service. With only eight beds, Old Mondoro is the park’s most intimate and private camp, exuding charm and charisma like nowhere else. Each of our four reed and canvas chalets have power and hot water and an outdoor bath and shower for soaking under the stars. A wide private veranda with daybeds is the perfect location from which to enjoy the majestic scenery and watch the passing wildlife – an omnipresent part of camp.

Puku Ridge Camp
Puku Ridge Camp, named after the Puku antelope that graze the floodplains in its view, is perched on a ridge in a remote part of the South Luangwa National Park at one of its most beautiful locations. The camp was rebuilt completely in 2019 in an African canvas/chic style that blends in completely with its gorgeous environment. This is a luxury camp with every comfort yet is intimate and friendly with just eight tents, offering the authentic safari experience that many people long for.

The Park is abundant with elephants, giraffes, leopards, lions, wild dogs, buffalos, zebras and various antelope species – many of which will be easily spotted as you lounge on your balcony or eat dinner. This stunning area can also be explored on foot with park rangers and tracking guides, and at night offering a chance to see some of the more elusive animals, such as leopards, genets, and honey badgers. Sunset is a perfect time to enjoy a cocktail in the bush, or on the banks of the Luangwa River in the company of one of Africa's largest hippo populations.

Any questions on this amazing safari welcome.

Take care and stay safe,
Riaan & Caroline

Time + Tide - A New Beginning 2019

I’m sure you’ve watched the evolution of our business as a few years later, investment by our team and family, led by Thierry Dalais, brought Norman Carr Safaris together with Chongwe Safaris in the Lower Zambezi.

Since then, we’ve grown, building Chinzombo, supporting African Parks in opening up Zambia’s Liuwa Plain, where we established our luxury lodge King Lewanika, and creating the stunning Miavana in the island archipelago of Nosy Ankao off the northeast coast of Madagascar.

It’s important that we stay united as we grow, and so I’m excited to announce that this year our family and camps will come together under one name - Time + Tide.

This consolidation is a huge step toward telling a consistent story that raises awareness of the extraordinary wilderness in Zambia and Madagascar and sets the stage for more to come.

Our 70 year history began with Norman Carr, who pioneered a community and conservation based safari experience in Zambia. This heritage continues to inspire us as we venture as guides and guardians to some of the most remote places on Earth.

Most of the 500+ people in our team are from the local areas where we operate. In Zambia, many of the team were trained by original founders, Norman Carr and Chris Liebenberg. Several still work with us and now some of their children and grandchildren have joined the fold. We have a similar philosophy in Madagascar. Our team have been an important part of the evolution from the three separate brands to become part of a stronger and unified ‘Time + Tide’ brand.

You too are partners in our story. As modern-day explorers, you are helping us preserve the wild places we would like to treasure for generations to come. So, I want to reassure you that even though our name is changing, our people, relationships, values, and heritage remain.

We are glad to have you on this journey with us and to celebrate our new beginning.

Our 3 Day Safari Through South Luangwa National Park in Zambia

In January, we spent three days driving through South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. We saw so many unique, amazing things and had such a splendid time! Our driver John was awesome, telling us lots of cool facts and even tracking down lions through the bush for us. We saw two leopard cubs which was the highlight of the trip as they are rare and one of our favorite animals. In total, we saw 7 leopards and 7 lions plus tons of other really awesome species! We definitely recommend checking this place out if you love wildlife! Please make sure to like and subscribe! We hope you enjoy seeing all these awesome creatures just as much as we did. Also check out our website and instagram!

If you are headed to South Luangwa, we highly highly recommend checking out John's safari as he was an absolute wonderful guide!
John Nature Safaris:

Nsefu- Zambia

Situated in the exclusive Nsefu Sector on a magnificent meander on the Luangwa River across which elephants often cross lies the historic camp Nsefu. Nsefu is one steeped in history and was built in 1951 and barring some upgrades the camp and rooms are still in the same place in the original style. The Nsefu sector was first pronounced a game reserve in 1966 some five years before the South Luangwa was even declared and has always been recognised as an outstanding game-viewing area. Robin Pope Safaris took over Nsefu in 1998, spent a year upgrading it and opened it the following July.

The camp welcomes just twelve guests in six original brick and thatch rondavels with en-suite facilities, each room opening up to what can simply be described as the best view in the South Luangwa.

Zambia – Bush & River Safari

Magnificent, wild and culturally rich, Zambia is everything you think Africa is and more. Still unspoiled and untamed, Zambia is the “Real Africa.” Joseph first flies into the South Luangwa National Park for astonishing wildlife and cultural encounters. We join Joseph on village visits, jeep excursions as well as on a walking safari for close encounters with the King of Beasts! He then heads south along the great Zambezi River. There he canoes through “Hippo City”, visits with a pride of lions, and for the icing on the cake journeys to Victoria Falls or as the locals call it, Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke that Thunders.” In one of the world’s great wonders he swims in the “Devil’s Pool” and leans out into the 300-foot abyss. In the end, he discovers that although Zambia’s wildlife is impressive and its natural wonders, breathtaking, it is the majesty of its people’s gentle smiles, open hearts, and quiet strength that outshines it all!

South Luangwa National Park Part 2 Video Details

After spending two days in South Luangwa National Park watching incredible and varied wild game we said bye-bye to Croc Valley Camp.

When Ben got tired of driving he would stop and do minor maintenance. And after off road 4WDing it was necessary to increase air pressure in the tires. When was the last time you used a hand pump to put air in tires?

That night we decide to camp at another high-end lodge with $10 camping. Carrying a tent is the smart way to travel Africa on a shoestring.
