Chiawa Camp - The Pioneer and premier luxury safari camp of the Lower Zambezi National Park

THE SOUL THAT CHIAWA SAFARIS IS BUILT ON.

The family owned and operated, multi-award-winning Chiawa Camp, is the pioneer of the Lower Zambezi National Park, the first camp to settle along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Zambia’s premier luxury safari camp, Chiawa is a gentle and unhurried experience for both wildlife and guests, while still offering up a diverse range of activities. From game drives to heart-stopping game walks as well as canoeing, boating and angling – all in the company of Africa’s finest guides.

Each of the luxury tents boast spectacular views over the Zambezi River and its vast array of resident wildlife. Elephant, lion, leopard, hippo and much more, occupy this gorgeous region of Zambia.

The creative culinary team at the Chiawa Camp ensure meals are of the highest standard, from seasonal menus developed and enhanced over time.

Along with Chiawa’s renowned dedication to its guests, staff, local communities and conservation, allow yourself to share in Chiawa’s passion, so that you can enjoy one of Africa’s finest safari camps and the wildlife adventure of a lifetime.

In the Soli language, Chiawa means ‘The one who shares’ – an appropriate name for such a camp that honours the local people and their traiditions.

The Lower Zambezi National Park, by virtue of the Zambezi River and its parallel escarpment, is one of Africa’s most scenic wildernesses, home to an impressive quantity and variety of wildlife that can be viewed not only on the more usual land-based Lower Zambezi activities, but also on a variety of water-based activities, and in the camps themselves.

In comparison to typical African safaris, the Lower Zambezi safari experience is unique: more remote, more exclusive, and experiential in nature. While both guests and guides require more patience with regards to game viewing, the results are often outstanding.

Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro are located in the middle of prime wildlife and habitat zones of the Lower Zambezi National Park, so we usually do not have to travel far to see wildlife. What’s more, often wildlife make their way into camp to visit us, providing out-of-this-world game sightings. Wildlife to be spotted includes elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, waterbuck, hippos and crocodiles.

Explore the safari activities below, all of which are included your unforgettable stay at Chiawa Camp and/or Old Mondoro.

Time + Tide - A New Beginning 2019

I’m sure you’ve watched the evolution of our business as a few years later, investment by our team and family, led by Thierry Dalais, brought Norman Carr Safaris together with Chongwe Safaris in the Lower Zambezi.

Since then, we’ve grown, building Chinzombo, supporting African Parks in opening up Zambia’s Liuwa Plain, where we established our luxury lodge King Lewanika, and creating the stunning Miavana in the island archipelago of Nosy Ankao off the northeast coast of Madagascar.

It’s important that we stay united as we grow, and so I’m excited to announce that this year our family and camps will come together under one name - Time + Tide.

This consolidation is a huge step toward telling a consistent story that raises awareness of the extraordinary wilderness in Zambia and Madagascar and sets the stage for more to come.

Our 70 year history began with Norman Carr, who pioneered a community and conservation based safari experience in Zambia. This heritage continues to inspire us as we venture as guides and guardians to some of the most remote places on Earth.

Most of the 500+ people in our team are from the local areas where we operate. In Zambia, many of the team were trained by original founders, Norman Carr and Chris Liebenberg. Several still work with us and now some of their children and grandchildren have joined the fold. We have a similar philosophy in Madagascar. Our team have been an important part of the evolution from the three separate brands to become part of a stronger and unified ‘Time + Tide’ brand.

You too are partners in our story. As modern-day explorers, you are helping us preserve the wild places we would like to treasure for generations to come. So, I want to reassure you that even though our name is changing, our people, relationships, values, and heritage remain.

We are glad to have you on this journey with us and to celebrate our new beginning.

ZAMBIA - From South Luangwa to the Lower Zambezi // EP.48

We are exploring some of the most beautiful wilderness in Zambia, visiting the South Luangwa National Park, and canoeing down the mighty Zambezi river.

We visit our first Safari in Africa with our own Land Rover Defender (self-drive safari). It is one of the wildest Parks in Africa and a delight as there are few visitors. We are visiting in the wet season, so it is a bit more difficult to spot animals due to the tall vegetation. But the main advantage is that we get to see the cute offspring, all the baby animals that were born weeks prior.

At the peak of the day as it gets hot the animals retrieve to the shadow, deep in the park so it is difficult to find them. We decide is a good moment to try other paths. The ranger told us it is still too wet to drive out of the main gravel path, but we still want to give it a go. We try all the paths first before the Prado attempts them, but all of them are too challenging. So much that we get our Defender stuck in the mud.

We leave the Luangwa river behind and cross the country, literally to get to our next destination. The meeting point between the Kafue and the Zambezi rivers. We are going to canoe down the Zambezi for 30km, Kayaking between hippos and crocodiles. It is a thrilling experience, and a beautiful way of being in nature, without disturbing it.

A one in a lifetime experience.

Enjoy The Ride!

Safari Activities in the Lower Zambezi with Chiawa Camp

A quick peak into the safari Activities and experiences on offer during your stay at Chiawa Camp in the Lower Zambezi National Park

Due to its proximity to the Zambezi River, the Lower Zambezi National Park is one of Africa’s most scenic wildernesses, allowing travelers a front row seat to Africa’s best safari activities.

The Lower Zambezi is home to an impressive quantity and variety of wildlife, for safari experiences viewed not only on the more usual land-based Lower Zambezi activities, but also on a variety of water-based activities, and in the camps themselves.

In comparison to typical African safaris, the Lower Zambezi safari experiences are unique: more remote, more exclusive, and experiential in nature.

Chiawa Camp is located in the middle of prime wildlife and habitat zones of the Lower Zambezi National Park, so we usually do not have to travel far to see wildlife! Even better, wildlife such as Elephant, Warthog, and Buffalo make their way into camp to visit us, providing out-of-this-world game sightings.

What can you do on safari in Zambia at Chiawa Camp?

Safari Activity #1
*Game Drives*
A most popular Zambia safari activity, the game drive is conducted in an open 4×4 safari vehicle. Cover more ground and get extra close to wildlife without placing yourself in harms way nor disturbing the wildlife. Game drives go out in the morning just after breakfast (don't worry, you'll enjoy another coffee along the way at a scenic stop off) and also in the afternoon, returning in time for dinner. Chiawa Safaris is renowned for their red light spotting game drives in the evening.

Learn more about why we use red filters on our spotlights during night drives -

Safari Activity #2
*Walking Safaris*
The walking safari is the purest safari experience, and often the most thrilling, not knowing what you will encounter around each corner. Our guides are trained naturalists, and you'll venture out with both a pro-guide (our guides are award-winning if you must know) along with a Zambia parks armed escort for safety. Ready to get your heart pumping on a walking safari?

Safari Activity #3
*Zambezi Canoe Safari*
If you thought a walking safari got your adrenaline going, try out the water-based version of full-on immersion into animal habitat. You're on their turf now... Trade land for the mighty river with a canoe trip safari experience. Whether you canoe along the spiraling and picturesque channels above camp or canoe amongst the islands down the main river close to shore, you'll see some incredible wildlife. Drifting in near silence past birds, crocs and hippos, plus a variety of mammals on the upper islands makes for a day to remember, however this is the Zambezi River at its most natural and unfortunately, also at its most dangerous. Are you game to try?

Safari Activity #4
*Zambia River Safari*
A favorite water-based safari activity, without the inherent danger of a canoe trip. Zambezi River Safaris, or Boat Cruises, are conducted on custom built, stable pontoon boats with a canopy.

Guided by one of our expert river guides who will have grown up on the Zambezi, you'll explore the main bank, islands and channels coming across fish eagles, herons, perhaps a buffalo lurking in the reeds, crocs and hippos sunning themselves, and elephants crossing the river or grabbing a bite on one of the many islands dotting the mighty river.

As the sun sets, your guide will pour your cocktails of choice and serve you snacks before gently motoring back to camp or dropping you off at a waiting 4×4 to take you on a night drive.

BONUS - Safari Activity #5
*Zambezi Tiger Fishing*
Fishing for tiger fish is a seasonal specialty of the Zambezi River and one of the best safari activities. The best time to catch them is from late August to mid November during the hotter months, but you'll find tiger fish and other species throughout our Zambian safari season. Netting and killing of any fish is not permitted - we apply a 100% catch & release for all species.

Haven't had enough? Read more about these activities on our website -

Old Mondoro- Intimate and Unedited - A “bucket-list bush camp in the Lower Zambezi National Park

THE CLASSIC & DE-CLUTTERED SAFARI CAMP FAR FROM ANY CROWDS FOR TRAVELERS THAT WISH TO EXPERIENCE A WILDER YET NO LESS COMFORTABLE SAFARI IN PRIVATE SURROUNDS.

The effortless and grounded luxury that Chiawa Safaris is known for, is right here at Old Mondoro. An intimate camp of only 5 chalets, the concept of this camp is simple – to provide guests with an authentic and unedited Zambian safari, providing a “back to the bush” atmosphere that centralizes on the wildlife and wilderness experience. That disconnects you from the internet and reconnects you with nature, yourself, and your loved ones.

A destination in itself, Old Mondoro is owned and operated by the Cumings family of the pioneer Chiawa Camp, which boasts enhanced luxuries and bush-sophistication, making a combination safari of these two camps a most rewarding visit to the Lower Zambezi.

LIVE AMONGST GIANTS UNDER TOWERING WINTERTHORN TREES.

Incredible wildlife encounters at this quintessential safari camp are those only found in your wildest dreams. Under the canopy of winterthorn trees and bordering the mighty Zambezi river, wild animals are part of the camp, sharing in your daily routine. Big cat sightings (some of the most prolific leopard sightings to be had in Africa) with the magic of the water providing island-hopping buffalo and elephant, as well as an extreme concentration of hippo.

“Mondoro” in Goba language means Lion. The camp name honours a mythical white lion that used to prowl nearby – although “Old Mondoro” is long gone, his descendants still roam the wilderness of the Lower Zambezi, wild and free.

Puku Ridge - Wilderness Refined - Luxurious tented safari lodge in the South Luangwa National Park

Newly renovated with no aspect left unattended to, the upgraded Puku Ridge luxury safari lodge llends style and comfort seamlessly with nature. From the elegant architectural lines to the thoughtfully outfitted game viewing vehicles and the perfectly-positioned photographic hide in front of the camp’s private watering hole.

Located well inside the incredible South Luangwa National Park with an outlook onto a private floodplain and watering hole, this remote and elevated landscape framed is enriched by the rolling gait of giraffe, the heart-shaped nose of the puku, and the midnight whoop of the hyena.

A collaboration between its new owners, Chichele Safaris, and the Cumings Family of Chiawa Camp & Old Mondoro – the reimagined Puku Ridge is situated on one of the Park’s prime sites.

The well-known and much loved facilities, service and guiding have been upgraded to the highest of standards that the Cumings Family’s own Lower Zambezi safari camps have become renowned. Unique in design but traditional in outlook, it has been completely rebuilt with a lighter footprint.

Elements from the Luangwa bush camps of old have been combined with traditional village life and authentic, local art works complement crucial creature comforts making for one of the most appealing and welcome safari camp launches for many years.

Previous guests of the old Puku Ridge will feel that everything has changed, but nothing has changed, as many special touches from the past have been retained.

Leopards Hill rd to Lower Zambezi GMA and Mvuu Lodge. Zambia Overland and 4x4.

Eulalie and I just spend a weekend in the Lower Zambezi. It was fantastic as always and we did not even go in to the National Park. Mvuu Lodge has fantastic campsites and the people at the lodge are so welcoming. Loved every second.

Mukambi Safari Lodge Zambia 2023

After a 3 day journey I finally arrived at the Mukambi Safari Lodge in Kafue National Park, Zambia. I settled in then headed out for a few game drives to see what I could see.

'BEST IN AFRICA' - GUIDING TEAM

REMARKABLE CONCENTRATIONS OF WILDLIFE

The Lower Zambezi National Park
Lingering along the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, this iconic region (which is still relatively undeveloped) is renowned for abundant wildlife in a raw and remote wilderness. From island hopping elephant and buffalo to prides of lion and prolific leopard sightings. Riverine ebony and fig tress grow thickly along the water’s edge, bordering inland floodplains with towering winterthorn and acacia. Rolling hills sit quietly as the backdrop of this just over 4,000 square kilometre park.

Best Time to Visit – from May to November (our camps are closed mid-November through April) with prime game viewing from June.

The South Luangwa National Park
A vast and pristine wilderness awaits those who visit this 9,000 sq km park. Open, grassy plains, lush valleys and mature woodlands are dramatically interrupted by the dynamic Luangwa River and her waterways, drawing an intense concentration of wildlife in search of hydration during the dry season. Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, herds of elephant and puku, and predators thrive in this captivating landscape. The most intact major river system in Africa and life-blood of the park, it is not to be missed.

Best Time to Visit – from July to October as the river attracts an exceptional number of wildlife.
