Through the Reefs in the Bahamas
Explore shallow reef-strewn waters of the Bahamas. We run up on the beach in the far-out Bahamian Islands.
Travelling the Far-Out Islands of the Bahamas there are often no other boats around for days. This trip was in the late spring, and we visited islands where very few boats travel. Our boat is very shallow with a swinging keel - our draft is just 3 feet with the keel up. Using the Explorer charts for the Bahamas we visited the Crooked and Acklins group, then sailed on to the Exumas.

Snorkeling Beautiful Reefs | Squid and Rays | Nassau Bahamas
Nassau Bahamas, we did the 2 Reef Snorkel by Boat excursion. Highlight was the pretty reefs, tons of fish, and a pair of squid.
After the excursion we went into town to have lunch at The Bearded Clam. Great little local bar in an alley, great food!

The Great Guana Cay reef was once recognized as one of the best dive sites in the world so we’re sailing from Elbow Cay north to Great Guana Cay to check it out. We’ve heard it may not be as pristine as it once was, but we’re eager to find out for ourselves and of course hunt for fish. We then enjoy more beautiful upwind sailing to our final destination in the Abacos. This was mine and my wife's 17th Wedding Anniversary and my Daughter and Son in Law's Honeymoon... we decided to go on a cruise together and had a blast.

We were heading straight for tropical storm Kate as it was passing Nassau and really thought our excursion catamaran sail and snorkel in Nassau was going to be ruined. When we arrived that morning the storm had moved out and away and the weather was almost perfect. The only noticeable effect was that the water was slightly hazy but still managed to get some incredible footage. The ride out to the reef in Nassau Harbor was fantastic and when we arrived at the reef I was so excited to get in the water. The amount of fish and different species was massive and the surrounding underwater scenery was absolutely beautiful. We only had about 45 min, but I could have stayed out there much longer. I took full advantage of our limited time and captured as much footage as I could and grabbed some really spectacular shots. On the way back from the reef we indulged in the complimentary rum punch that seemed to flow endlessly. Needless to say, by the time we got back to the dock we were feeling mighty good...
