The Florida Keys are more of a chain of islands located in southern Florida’s Counties. They are an archipelago that runs 15 miles away from Miami, drifting towards the southwest and going as close as 90 miles to Cuba. Being close to the shore, you can already start contemplating what a good place it is to live in.
The weather is warm all year round, and you have the whole beach to yourself. There are lots of attractions to see and things to do while staying in the Keys, making it a perfect residence for beach-life lovers who love adventure and quiet life alike.
If you're thinking of moving to the Florida Keys, these are the best places to checkout.
Anyone who has been to Key Largo and compared it to all other ‘Keys’ will definitely tell you it’s the best place you can be in. The main reason for this is its proximity to the mainland compared to the other cities.
The fact that it’s viewed as the best place to live in the Florida Keys makes it a bit more costly compared to the other areas. However, it’s relatively cheap if you were to compare it with cities like Miami.
On top of its proximity to the mainland, you get to enjoy a plethora of activities and amenities in the area. Most of the activities here are water-related as the place is close to the Atlantic. There are enough schools which are also quite affordable.
Let’s begin with a fun fact about this Key. Even though it has a west on its name, Key West is Florida’s and United States’ southernmost point. It’s just around 90 miles from Cuba and is well known for its conch-style houses. It’s also the main city in Monroe County, Florida. If you are the type that isn’t looking for the city noise and still doesn’t want to let go of the thrill that comes with it, Key West is the place to be.

Living In The Florida Keys: Why You Should Invest In A Vacation Rental Property

Key Colony Beach was founded in the early 1950s by a developer named Phil Sadowski and was incorporated in 1957. It is located on 286 acres of land and includes approximately 1,368 housing units, 118 undeveloped lots, and 11 lots in the process of development.
Our small city boasts of having three beautiful parks, including Sunset Park which gives all visitors and residents access to beautiful key sunsets, the ocean, and Sunday Concerts; recreation areas for adults and children, and a municipal golf course.
The number of residents there fluctuates greatly. There are 822 permanent residents who enjoy the beautiful year-round climate; in mid-winter, however, the population peaks at 3,600, and averages around 2,500 most of the year.
The current make-up consists of duplex homes, then condominiums, single-family homes, motel rooms, and time-share units. It also has 15 commercial establishments.

Sombrero Beach is the City's jewel and showplace. Located at the end of Sombrero Beach Boulevard (the traffic light at Mile Marker 50 near Kmart and Publix), the park had suffered years of neglect. After the City was incorporated in 2000, Marathon's first City Council held workshops and redeveloped the beach, adding new pavilions, restrooms, and environmental features, plus making the entire park handicapped-accessible. There is a kid's playground, a volleyball court, wheelchair-friendly walkways, and plenty of pavilions for your picnic or cookouts. Tall coconut palms sway in the tropical breezes, and Sombrero Beach is continually rated as one of the best beaches in South Florida. Sombrero Beach is also the host of Marathon's July 4th Celebration, an all-day event that culminates in the Keys' best fireworks display.
Coco Plum Beach, located on Coco Plum Drive off of Mile Marker 54, is an undeveloped natural beach. After Marathon was incorporated, the City cleaned up years of accumulated debris and garbage and returned the beach to its natural state. Quiet and peaceful are two words that people use frequently to describe the natural beauty of Coco Plum Beach. The park includes a natural wetlands area for preservation and is very popular with locals and visitors who want some quiet island downtime. There are restrooms and a covered thatch roof tiki pavilion on site, plus lots of natural wooded areas bordering the tropical sea.
Both beach parks are dog-friendly, there is no admission charge to either beach, and the hours are from 7:00 a.m. until dusk. Both Sombrero Beach and Coco Plum Beach are turtle-nesting beaches, and from April through October, it is not unusual to have Loggerhead Turtles (primarily) coming onto the beach at night to lay their eggs. During this period, the City will not have tables or benches on the beach so as to not interfere with turtle nesting activities. The City is responsible for surveying the beaches during turtle nesting season, so if you see a nest that has been staked off, please do not disturb it.
The City of Marathon is proud of its beaches and encourages both locals and visitors to enjoy the best of the island life on our beautiful tropical shores. Come and swim with our Dolphins at Dolphin Research Center.
