Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. Introducing KYIV | My First Day in UKRAINE'S Capital City!
KYIV, UKRAINE: My first day walking around the capital city of Ukraine. I joined a walking tour, learnt about the Revolution of Dignity in Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) & checked into the Hotel Ukraine.

Welcome to my first solo travel vlog in Kyiv and a delve into the Euromaidan Revolution, also known as the Revolution of Dignity. I spent the morning walking around Kyiv on a free Revolution Tour which visited the important sites in Kyiv city centre and explained the Euromaidan movement as it happened. The tour started at the Maiden information boards and included a visit to the graves and memorials of the fallen protestors.
The walking tour also revisited the history of the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution that sparked to life in Maidan Nezalezhnosti, which translates to English as Independence Square. The meeting place has come a long way since it was named Soviet Square in 1919!
During the tour we looked at what things were like during the revolution, what areas the protesters and police occupied and the exact location where snipers massacred sections of the protesters close to Independence Square. These days the locations are marked with photographs, candles and memorials dedicated to those who lost their lives.
After learning about the revolution I joined another tour for some more walking around Kyiv, this time visiting some of Kiev’s landmarks including the Ukrainian Parliament building, the Kyiv Museum of Water and the Friendship of Nations Arch close to an eye-catching observation deck overlooking the Dnieper (Dnipro) River. It was another enjoyable walk through the streets of Kyiv even as the temperature continued to plummet into double digits way down below freezing!
My first impressions of Kyiv are very positive. I love the architecture, history and that it looks very different to most of the places I’ve travelled to in Europe. However, after one day on the tourist route it is clear that you can barely scratch the surface in a day. There is a tremendous amount to see and do, perfect maybe for a long weekend. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the city in the coming days. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the vlog!

KYIV UKRAINE FIRST IMPRESSIONS and HISTORY (KIEV Lockdown)
We decided to sold most of our belongings and travel the work while working remotely.
After being in Lockdown for a year we decided to change our apartments daily scenery and travel the world while working remotely. First destination, Kyiv Ukraine. But travelling in Covid times (especially with South African passports) is very tricky.
We landed in Ukraine right when they went into a new lockdown but still managed to tour the city. Having been part of the Soviet Union it has a fascinating history and architecture that reflects that.
