The 34-mile-long Zhuhai-Macau bridge opens in Hong Kong

The world's longest sea-crossing bridge connecting Hong Kong and Macau to Zhuhai, south-east China is set to finally open this week, nine years after construction began. The much anticipated Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will open to traffic on Wednesday 9am local time. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend an opening ceremony on Tuesday in Zhuhai. Construction started in 2009 on the 55-kilometre (34-mile) crossing, which includes a snaking road bridge and underwater tunnel, linking Hong Kong's Lantau island to the southern mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai and the gambling enclave of Macau, across the waters of the Pearl River Estuary. Stretching across 55 kilometres (34 miles), it is 14 miles longer than the width of the English Channel from Dover in the United Kingdom to Calais in France.

Full bus journey from Hong Kong to Macau via the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge

This is a video of me taking the bus from Hong Kong to Macau via the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge on a single decker coach. I went on a day trip to Macau during my Christmas break. After clearing immigration at the Hong Kong checkpoint next to the airport, I had to cross the bridge by shuttle bus. I paid HK$65 for a shuttle bus ticket and got out side to board the bus. This time, I was assigned a single decker coach. I was lucky enough to sit in the front row and held my action camera throughout the journey.

While the view is slightly restricted, you will get to watch the bus go through the Scenic Hill Tunnel, travel along the southern edge of the Hong Kong Airport Island before entering Mainland China. Afterwards, the bus entered an Undersea Tunnel before emerging on the main bridge, where there are three named bridges, the Qingzhou Bridge (青州航道橋), Jianghai Bridge (江海航道橋) and Jiuzhou Bridge (九州航道橋). There is a toll plaza on the other end of the bridge, after which there is a fork in the road to the checkpoints of Macau and Zhuhai. The bus turned left towards the Macau checkpoint and parked outside the immigration building.

I have also made a video showing how to take this bus and get to Macau for less than HK$100. Please click this link to check it out:

China Unveils World’s Longest Sea Bridge

The world’s longest sea bridge has officially opened to traffic, connecting Hong Kong and Macau to the Chinese mainland. The 34-mile (55-kilometer) “Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge” features a range of unusual features, with The Guardian reporting “cameras to detect yawning, drivers forced to wear heart monitors and access restricted to the political elite and charity donors.”

Opened by Chinese president Xi Jinping, the $20billion bridge was constructed of 400,000 tonnes of steel, the equivalent of 60 Eiffel Towers. The bridge has been designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons of up to 340 kilometers per hour.

Save this picture!
The span between Hong Kong, Macau, and the Chinese mainland is composed of three elements, with a main 30-kilometer span from the mainland landing on an artificial island. The land then linked to a sister island via a 7-kilometer-long, 44-meter-deep tunnel, which allows for shipping to continue.

The tunnel meets a further link bridge to Hong Kong via the International Airport and a border crossing, where cars switch from the right-hand side of the road (typical on the Chinese mainland) to the left-hand side (typical in Hong Kong) at a specifically-built “merge point.”

Save this picture!
As drivers cross the bridge, heart rate and blood pressure is monitored, with information sent to the bridge’s control center. As reported by The Guardian, if a driver yawns three or more times in 20 seconds, a “yawn cam” will the raise an alert.

The bridge is not just a mega transport infrastructure jointly built by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. The collaboration between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao in terms of trade, finance, logistics and tourism will be strengthened. Hong Kong will assume a more proactive role in the development of the Greater Bay Area.
-Frank Chan Fan, Secretary and Transport and Housing, Hong Kong

Although hailed as a feat of engineering, the bridge has not been without criticism. People from Hong Kong will require special permits to use the bridge, despite the project being part-funded by Hong Kong taxpayers, as reported by the South China Morning Post. Meanwhile, environmental groups such as the WWF have raised concerns over the bridge’s impact and potential harm to the critically rare Chinese white dolphin.

China also holds the record for the world's highest bridge, which was opened to traffic in the southwest of the country in 2016.

Hong Kong to Macau in 1 Minute - Turbojet Ride Time Lapse

TurboJET is the brand name for the operations of the Hong Kong-headquartered Shun Tak-China Travel Ship Management Limited, which was established from the joint venture between Shun Tak Holdings Limited and China Travel International Investment Hong Kong Limited in July 1999. It operates hydrofoil ferry services in southern China.

It acquired First Ferry (Macau) from New World First Ferry in August 2011.

Shun Tak and China Travel had their own separate ferry business brands before merging as TurboJET, on 1 July 1999. They were Far East Jetfoil by Shun Tak, and Turbo Cat by CTS Parkview Company Ltd.

Hong Kong (香港; Fragrant Harbour), officially known as Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a city[9] located on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea.[10] Hong Kong is well known for its expansive skyline, deep natural harbour and extreme population density (some seven million inhabitants over a land mass of 1,104 km2 (426 sq mi)).[11] The current population of Hong Kong comprises 93.6% ethnic Chinese.[5] A major part of Hong Kong's Cantonese-speaking majority originated from the neighbouring Guangdong province,[12] from where many fled during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Civil War, and the communist rule in China.[13][14][15][16] It was also named the freest market economy by the Heritage Foundation Index of Economic Freedom.[17]

Macau (/məˈkaʊ/; traditional Chinese: 澳門; simplified Chinese: 澳门; Jyutping: ou3mun4*2; pinyin: Àomén), also spelled Macao, is one of the two Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong, which is about 64 kilometers to the east, and it is also bordered by Guangdong Province to the north and the South China Sea to the east and south.[8] With an estimated population of around 636,200 living in an area of 30.3 km2 (11.6 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.[9]
A former Portuguese colony, Macau was administered by Portugal from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia.[10][11] Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal by the Ming Dynasty as a trading port. The Portuguese administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony of the Portuguese Empire. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred back to China on 20 December 1999. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.[12]

Under the policy of one country, two systems, the PRC's Central People's Government is responsible for the territory's defense and foreign affairs, while Macau maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy, and immigration policy. Macau participates in many international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty.[12][13]

Macau is one of the world's richest cities, and as of 2013 its GDP per capita by purchasing power parity is higher than that of any country in the world, according to the World Bank.[14][15] It became the world's largest gambling centre in 2006,[16] with the economy heavily dependent on gambling and tourism, as well as manufacturing. Cantonese people from Hong Kong and Guangdong, in addition to the recent mainland tourism from Mandarin-speaking regions, have boosted the economy of Macau significantly. According to The World Factbook, Macau has the second highest life expectancy in the world.[17] Moreover, it is one of only a few regions in Asia with a very high Human Development Index, ranking 25th as of 2011.[18]
