The World's Happiest Country?! (GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS)

Truthfully, I have never witnessed happier human beings than right here, in this lovely country called BHUTAN.

Instead of using GDP to measure their country’s wealth and prosperity, they use GNH - GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS. (Seriously, this is not a joke!!!)

The 4 pillars of GNH are:
- Sustainable development
- Environmental protection
- Cultural preservation
- Good governance

Together, these 4 pillars have been ingrained in Bhutanese society since 1974, when King Jigme Singye Wangchuck created it. GNH has revolutionized the way in which this country operates, going far beyond happiness of its people. It has led to Bhutan becoming one of the greenest countries in the world and a global leader in sustainability. It's the ONLY country to have negative carbon emissions. This means that its forests absorb more carbon dioxide each year than its sources of pollution (factories) give out. How amazing is that?

There is so much to admire about Bhutan, and it all stems from Gross National Happiness.

Have any questions about visiting Bhutan? Comment below, and I'll be happy to help out!

What is BHUTAN? Inside Asia's Hidden Country

Have you ever heard of BHUTAN? It's a tiny country of 800,000 people, sandwiched between India and China in the Himalayan mountains.

I arrived here in Bhutan just 2 days ago, and it has REALLY fascinated me in terms of cleanliness, friendliness and natural beauty.

Bhutan is unique. Bhutan is innovative. Bhutan takes great measures to protect their cultural identity and natural environment, which consists of 72% forest.

There are many other things that Bhutan does, which puts them in another league when compared to the rest of the world.

BHUTAN IS THE WORLD'S ONLY COUNTRY WHO:
- has banned the sale and consumption of tobacco
- absorbs more CO2 than it gives out, making them 'carbon negative'
- largest export is renewable energy
- measures their country's prosperity by happiness, not wealth
- can sentence you to life in prison for killing an endangered animal

Protecting their environment has had a positive correlation with the happiness of its people -- Bhutan consistently ranks as the happiest country in Asia and top 10 in the world overall. Maybe the rest of the world should take Bhutan's lead?

In this video, I did my best to sum up Bhutan in less than 4 minutes. This will be the first of 5 (possibly 6) videos on the country. Stay tuned to learn more!

Bhutan - Carbon Negative Land

Fog-enshrouded temples nestled in mountainous terrains gives you a glimpse of what makes Bhutan a top-travel destination.

But this country has an added bonus, it’s the only carbon-negative country in the world.

Despite its appeal, not many people travel to Bhutan.
This is because the government of Bhutan has put steps in place to prevent massive amounts of tourists from entering the country at any given time.

And this is just one of the ways that Bhutan is making a commitment to conserving its environment.
In fact, this country has emerged as a dark horse in both political and environmental progression.

The government of Bhutan has a history of basing political decisions on a Gross National Happiness (GNH) index,
and abandoning economic growth as their compass. It’s the only country in the world to make such a switch and the first country to become carbon negative.

Coincidence? We think not.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CARBON NEGATIVE ?
Bhutan is the only carbon negative country

Carbon dioxide is the leading greenhouse gas emission produced by human activities – like farming, forestry and the burning of fossil fuels.
High levels of carbon dioxide increase the amount of heat that is trapped in the atmosphere, this is one of the causes of climate change.

Most countries produce far more carbon dioxide than the world’s oceans and plant life are able to absorb.
These countries are contributing to the effects of climate change in a big way.

But the Kingdom of Bhutan stands out from the crowd. More than 70% of the country is covered in trees.
This large amount of tree cover has seen Bhutan becoming a carbon sink – meaning that it absorbs more carbon dioxide than it produces.
Bhutan absorbs roughly seven million tons of carbon dioxide annually and only produces around two million tons.

Bhutan also exports most of the renewable hydro-electric power that it generates from its rivers.
This counteracts the country’s contribution towards carbon emissions by millions of tons each year.

Dasho Tshering Tobgay
Former Prime Minister of Bhutan
PDP President, Bhutan.

The former prime minister of Bhutan, who focuses on sustainability and prioritizes public happiness over GDP.

BHUTAN | Beautiful Destinations

There’s a place on earth, perhaps one of the last, where nature and humans exist as one; the government prioritizes happiness, and conservation of the land and wildlife is so important, laws are in place to protect it. Welcome to Bhutan, the last great “Shangri-La,” the last great oasis.

Entering into the grounds of Bhutan is like traversing into a dream. Time seems to slow. The wind breathes through the Himalayas, through the torn prayer-flags lining the high passes, and out through the breaths of chanting monks. Tigers creep through the backcountry, black-necked cranes glide above; the slow crawl of traffic weaves through one designated lane. Everything lives in one harmonious existence. This is a nation with people who welcome you like family. And for those fortunate enough to visit, it will feel like coming home.

ON THE KINGDOM OF BHUTAN
Landlocked by China, Tibet, and India, the Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan finds its home nestled on the eastern edge of the Himalayas. The country is known for its dramatic and varying landscapes — vast forests, sweeping valleys, and snowy mountains — which span an area of almost 40,000 square kilometers. Ancient dzongs (fortresses) and ornamental monasteries, including that of the cliff-hanging Tiger’s Nest, are also stunning and well-known fixtures of the country. Culture, sustainability, and deeply-rooted consciousness are prominent values that cling to every aspect of the country and day-to-day life here.

ON THE COUNTRY'S ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS
Bhutan's devotion to the environment lies at the root of everything. In 2008, the country created a constitution establishing that a minimum of sixty percent of the country’s land must always be covered by forests. Currently, more than seventy percent of the area is forested. Protection efforts extend to the land’s inhabitants as well; laws are in place making it illegal to hunt or trap wildlife. Thanks to these protections, red pandas, tigers, and almost 800 species of birds can thrive in Bhutan's rich biodiversity. As a result of these conservation endeavors, Bhutan is the only carbon-negative country in the world, meaning that it absorbs more carbon than it produces — four times more, in fact.

ON BEING THE HAPPIEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD
Bhutan is considered the “happiest country” in the world, based off an economic principle known as “Gross National Happiness” (GNH). The term was first coined in 1972 by the fourth king of Bhutan who wanted to ensure that the Bhutanese quality of life was given the same importance as the country's increasing development and growing economy.

So how do you measure happiness? The government surveys nine domains — categories that encompass wellbeing, culture, environment, education, and good governance — every few years and a single number, derived from further sub-indexes and indicators, is calculated based on the results. One incredible outcome of GNH is it shows that true, sustaining happiness is created by a sense of purpose. And while this index may only seem like data, it represents a set of values that guide citizens in their daily lives and the government in its policies. Other governing entities, like the U.N., have even begun to look to Bhutan to adapt some of its practices.

ON SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL (TO AND WITHIN THE COUNTRY)
Visitors are required to apply for a visa and book their travel through a tourism agency sponsored by the government. There is a $200 minimum visa fee per day which covers all costs including meals, accommodations, transport within the country, and a licensed Bhutanese tour guide. While some travelers may not be fond of being with a guide at all times, many find they prefer it. These highly equipped guides can set up excursions based on specific interests — hiking, food, culture, conservation, art — allowing visitors to craft more meaningful itineraries and create friendships and cultural exchanges with locals that may not have occurred otherwise. Think of these guides as guardian angels of the country and its guests.

5 Reasons Why Bhutan Is The Most Eco Friendly Country In The World

When it comes to going green, no country does it better than Bhutan. It is the only carbon negative country in the world. Here are some facts explaining why Bhutan in the most eco-friendly country in the world.

The constitutional law states that 60% of the country’s land should remain forested

In 2015, Bhutan set a Guinness World Record by planting 50,000 trees in just one hour

The birth of the first Royal Child of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was celebrated by planting 108,000 saplings

Bhutan is the only Carbon Negative country in the world i.e. it absorbs more carbon than it emits

Bhutan is heavily investing in renewable energy like geothermal and hydropower plants. They are aiming to become a zero-emission country by 2030

Book your Bhutan Holiday packages with SOTC:

Negative carbon emission country, Bhutan

The country wants to ensure that at least 60% of the country is under forestation at all times and it produces negative carbon dioxide. Bhutan grabbed media attention recently when people of Bhutan planted 108,000 trees to welcome the newborn prince.

Gangkhar Puensum is the highest mountain that no climber has conquered. At almost 25,000 ft, it is the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. And it’s in Bhutan.
Climbing to the Gangkhar Puensum is banned since 1994 due to security purposes.

Flying into Bhutan over the Himalayas, the first thing you notice are the trees with green living valleys and people wearing different dresses speaking in their local languages.

PM Tshering Tobgay Inaugral Speech

World’s, only carbon-negative country. Bhutan ????????

A glimpse from my recent trip to Bhutan. Such an amazing place to be.

Bhutan - Carbon negative country!

The greener view of Thimphu's rich forest with some wetland on the valley of Thimphu, Bhutan. Bhutan pristine environment with high rugged mountains and deep valleys offers ecosystems that are both rich and diverse.

About 72% of the total land area of Bhutan is under forest cover and about 60% of the land area falls under protected areas comprising of 10 national parks and sanctuaries.

Bhutan is considered as the world leading ‘carbon negative’ country, as it sucks up three times the CO2 emissions that the 700,000 population produces, turning the country into a carbon sink.

Shanghai Expo; The first Carbon Neutrality expo.

Join me as I visit the first ever Carbon Neutrality Expo at the National Convention Center Shanghai, which exhibits many solutions such as NEV vehicles, public transport, renewable energy generation, hydrogen fuel cells, recycling and digital optimisation.

Cutting-edge technologies and pioneering products featuring new energy and low-carbon development are being showcased at an international carbon neutrality expo in Shanghai, one of the country's vehicles for fulfilling its commitment to reaching peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
The latest technologies involving energy transformation, circular economy, low-carbon services and transportation are on display at the expo.

The U.S. carmaker Tesla brought more advanced products beyond electric cars.
Megapack, a powerful energy storage battery, can store 3 megawatt-hours of energy per unit, enough to power 3,600 homes for an hour, said Tesla.
The carmaker announced in April that it is opening a Megapack factory in Shanghai, which initially plans to produce 10,000 units per year, equivalent to about 40 gigawatt-hours of energy storage.
Solar Roof, another Tesla energy product, can completely replace the roof of home with its stress and hail resistance the same as the traditional one, said the exhibitor.

China Baowu Steel Group Corporation demonstrated its carbon-neutral metallurgical technology roadmap, which can help reduce emissions from the industry.
Baowu started constructing China's first million-tonne hydrogen-based shaft furnace project last year. After completion, it is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 500,000 tonnes per year compared to traditional processes.

Compared to air cooling, direct liquid cooling (DLC) technology reduces heat consumption by 90 to 95 percent and server energy consumption by 10 to 20 percent, regardless of climate conditions.
It also doesn't require a refrigeration station, greatly reducing the power supply facility's size, nor does it need the traditional fans for IT equipment, cutting off the noise disturbance.
The technology is currently being used in the Jiading Cloud Computing Park, Shanghai's first immersion liquid cooling industrial park.

A low-carbon initiative declaration was released on Sunday.
It called on enterprises and social organizations to take the initiative to shoulder the social responsibility of resource conservation and environmental protection, implement the concept of green, low-carbon and circular development in the whole process of production and operation, and actively promote the research and development and application of green and low-carbon technologies.

All citizens are encouraged to purchase environmentally friendly products instead of disposable ones, practice garbage sorting, choose green travel alternatives and not waste food.

Taking up about 100,000 square meters exhibition area, the carbon neutrality expo will host a series of themed exhibitions, trade matchmaking activities and summit forums. It is expected to attract more than 600 exhibitors at home and abroad as well as receive 100,000 visitors, said Zhou Minhao, chairman of the Shanghai Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

The National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) (NECC) is an exhibition and convention centre in Shanghai, China. The NECC is currently the largest exhibition complex, making it one of the landmark buildings in Shanghai. The building was co-built by Ministry of Commerce of China and Shanghai Municipal Government.

The center consists of four exhibition halls, the NECC Plaza, office buildings and a hotel. The façade of the NECC building draws inspiration from a four-leaf clover with the plaza as the core and the exhibition halls as its leaves.

Located in the Qingpu District in western Shanghai, the NECC enjoys multiple means of transportation provided by the Hongqiao transportation hub, including buses, metro, high-speed railway and airport. Metro Line 2's East Xujing station is the closest metro station to the center.
