Rise Above Lebanon (Full Version)

Follow on instagram! @riseabovelebanon

We spent 5 summer months filming Lebanon from Above, including its rural, urban, cultural touristic and historical location, as well as the amazing number of festivals.

The idea was to show Lebanon's beauty, diversity and wealth from another angle (above), in order to encourage and promote international and domestic tourism.

My main personal goal is to remind us all that Lebanon is not all about problems, political turmoil, trash...etc but is first and foremost a country that has so much to offer on such a small portion of land, and is still, in spite of everything, truly beautiful.

Maybe by seeing this video, people who lost sight of what Lebanon truly is, will have newfound optimism and strength to participate in steering the country in the right direction, to understand that it is their country to love and protect.

_____________________________________________________

We filmed from mid June to early November and covered Mount Lebanon, Beirut, Southern Lebanon, the Bekaa, Baalbek and North Lebanon.

The book, also titled Rise Above Lebanon, was released on 2 December 2015. it is a hardcover photography book of the highest standard, with 200 pages of images of Lebanon from Above and is available in all major bookshops in Lebanon.

Welcome to Beirut, Lebanon. The capital of Lebanon is widely known for its beauty. It is often dubbed, the Paris of the Middle East. Lebanon in general is one of the worlds oldest, diverse and most beautiful countries. This nation, located in the cradle of civilisations and home to some of the most historical places on Earth, has endured multiple different empires and rulers, from the Ottomans, to the French and Phoenicians, each leaving their mark to make this one of the richest countries on Earth.
However, modern Lebanon is a country in the midst of a deep crisis. A hyperinflation crisis has caused the currency (the Lebanese Pound / Lira ) to collapse, and many local people to lose pretty much everything they had. Overnight, many peoples savings just, disappeared. This, coupled with the ongoing aftermath & effects of 2020 Beirut Port Explosion, a dispute between the government and religious sectors of the time zone, and multiple revolutions has driven this great country to the verge of catastrophe.
We came to Beirut to experience the beauty to this wonderful city, the hospitality, the nightlife and of course the cuisine, but, upon arriving, we couldn't escape the reality of what is happening here. So, this is the reality of life in Lebanon in 2023. It is shocking, angering and heart-breaking in equal measure.

Americans In Beirut During Revolution in Lebanon (Our Experience)

Americans In Beirut During Revolution in Lebanon (Our Experience)

November 2019 | When we first landed in Beirut and experienced the Revolution first hand, I think what surprised us most was talking to the younger generations. Many of the stories that had been passed on to them were ones based on fear.

But leading with fear means that you often act out of desperation, and desperation leads you to resentment, not just of oneself but also towards one's own country. And if you harbor those feelings of resentment for too long people eventually become cynical and lose hope.

BUT that’s not what we saw here on the ground. Walking around, hearing stories, asking questions, engaging with the people - only showed us more of their resilience and optimism. ????????

And most importantly, we saw the forging of Lebanon’s new identity. The Lebanese love their country and are willing to fight for it (without violence)! As Americans in Beirut arriving during the revolution in Lebanon, we left with the hopes of planning to return. Until next time Lebanon, and thank you again for welcoming us with such open arms. ????????

OUR STORY
Hey! We're Olivia and Nathan ???????? A couple from California.

We met back in 2014 in Monterey, California. I (Olivia) was a senior in college & Nathan had recently moved back to the area after living in Italy.

After a few “deep life talks” (ones that were so foreign to me) and hearing about the lifestyle Nathan had been creating for himself for the last 6 years, I wanted to spend more time with him.

We started dating and I learned how he’d moved to Cambodia when he was 17, Germany when he was 18, Italy when he was 20, and was itching to travel again.

I was fascinated and wondered HOW THE HELL DID THIS GUY PAY FOR ALL OF THAT? IS HE A DRUG DEALER?

Nathan would work in California for 2 years, save every dollar he could, move abroad, find a job in that country, live there for 1-2 years and then do it all over again. Each time, he’d learn the language of that country, acquire new skills & make lifelong friends.

I was deeply inspired & wanted to travel with him. After 1 year of working our butts off and saving every dollar we could, we moved to Australia. We lived + worked there for 3 years (learned to speak perfect Australian lol) & created online jobs so we could continue traveling full-time.

CURRENTLY: When covid hit, we flew home and bought an RV to travel the US. That’s what we’re currently doing now, and boy is it a LEARNING CURVE but also thrilling!

Down to earth, entertaining, and informative is our goal — we want you to feel like you’re experiencing the day with us.

Welcome to ON World Travel ????????

Is This The Language Of The Future? | Lebanon ???????? Language Mix

►Learn any Language, 7 day FREE trial:

Imagine a future with no borders between countries, in which cultures are deeply mixed, What language would we speak? ????????‍♂️

I just arrived in the beautiful country of Lebanon ❤️ ???????? and their youth feels like the youth of earth's future, let me explain.

People in Lebanon ???????? have a very unique way of speaking in which they switch from Arabic to English and to French constantly during their speech ???? it’s really crazy! And very special to hear.

Some places like in Latin America adopt a couple of words from English because of pop culture, but in Lebanon is really something else ????, it feels like an entirely new way of communicating, a way of the future.

When I asked why they do this, they explained that most people speak at least two of these three languages, French ????because of past French control of the land, English ????‍♀️because it’s the language of the internet and the movies, and Arabic ????????because is what the previous generations of Lebanese spoke. Plus they learn all three at school.

But how do they decide when to switch????‍♂️, well, it’s simple, they switch when the other language has a more accurate way of describing what they are trying to say!.

For example, when discussing something emotional, they tend to go to Frech, when in need of specific words, or when discussing history they go to Arabic, when describing technology they tend to use English, but of course these are examples, it depends on the person and the conversation sometimes is just a word in one language and then back to the previous one, and sometimes is full sentences or minutes in one language and then switch. It’s awesome!❤️????

I just found it extremely interesting and I can definitely see this being the case in the future for many countries, especially as we are increasingly connected.

Remember: If you want to learn any language! I ????recommend Pimsleur courses, I will leave a link in the comments for a 7-day free trial, It’s what I use and it’s awesome! (and it helps me keep making these videos ????????)
