On this UK travel vlog we woke up in Edinburgh with a wee hangover, and headed out on the search for a traditional scottish breakfast - including haggis and tattie scones!
After breakfast, and Emma trying her first Irn-Bru, we grabbed our bags and jumped on the train from Edinburgh to York. In York, we explored the city streets, wandered around the Shambles and got some great views from the old city walls. Ending our day with Alex giving us a rather questionable lesson on northern slang!
At this point, we decided it was best to jump off our Safestay Rail Pass trip and wait until it is safe to travel again.

First Time In Scotland | Trying Battered Mars Bar & Scottish Curry | Hostel Travel Series Part 2

First Time In Scotland | Trying Battered Mars Bar & Scottish Curry | Hostel Travel Series Part 2

Subscribe: | Make sure to enable ALL push notifications!

On this UK travel vlog we experience our first time in Scotland, where we finally get to try the famous battered mars bar and a Scottish curry (i.e. the chicken tikka masala)!
On this trip we are using the Safestay Rail Pass to cover our hostel accommodation and train journeys. We also include a coronavirus update with regards to our Europe leg of the trip.
We started our day with some sightseeing at the Glasgow Necropolis and Glasgow Cathedral (the oldest cathedral in mainland Scotland). We then tried a battered Mars chocolate bar from the chippy for the first time followed by walking up the spiral staircase to The Lighthouse, which has a fantastic viewpoint of the city from above! Best of all? It's free!
After working up an appetite we then decided to try the UK's national dish in the place it is said to have been created.. the chicken tikka masala curry!

GLASGOW'S BEST QUICK BITE: Major Surprise at Scottish street food result in Tripadvisor... Greek!

While playing around with Tripadvisor, I wondered what Glasgow's best and favourite 'quick bite' takeaway was. I guessed it would be something like kebabs, pizzas or fish and chips. The number one location was MacTassos who specialised in Greek and Mediterranean street food.

Eating a Deep-Fried Mars Bar in Edinburgh, Scotland

On a quest to try a deep-fried Mars bar, we found a local chip shop in Edinburgh, Scotland that specialized in deep frying chocolate bars including Snickers bars and also Twix.

I remember seeing a program featuring Scotland nearly a decade ago where a deep-fried Mars bar was featured.

In my teenage years at the time, I thought it was an absolutely brilliant idea. I loved deep fried chips, battered fish and fried rice. Why not fry a chocolate bar?

Now that I look back in hindsight, I wonder if this was the rational of the chipper who first fried a Mars bar in the mid 90's in Stonehaven.

Little did he/she know what a phenomenon they would create.

Now nearly 1/4 of all chip shops in Scotland offer the option of deep frying a Mars bar (or any chocolate bar for that matter). Some even feature a dedicated fryer exclusive for the chocolate bars only. In popular tourist areas certain shops sell as many as 50-200 bars per week!

Hunting down a shop in Edinburgh was a little more tricky than it is in say Glasgow.

When I finally did locate a shop, I immediately noticed an impressive selection of different chocolate bars.

Upon the recommendation of the chipper I decided to go with a deep-fried Mars bar, deep-fried Snickers and deep-fried Twix.

Although this may sound glutinous to some, I felt a responsibility to report which bar was the best ;)

The kind owner let me into the back of the kitchen to film and learn the tricks of the trade first hand: You just stick it in the batter and shake it around. It's a secret recipe. Keep it in the fryer for 2-3 minutes. It's 170 degrees.

Before I knew it, I had four slabs of deep fried chocolate in my hands and it was time to experience a taste test. Audrey, feeling queasy from an upset stomach, left me to my own devices to sample all three for the two of us. Oh, what a pity ;)

I started off with the Mars bar. The first thing I noticed was that the bar appeared to have shrunk a bit in size and was a little flimsy from the melted chocolate inside. Upon taking my first bite I felt the crispiness of the deep fried batter give way to melted chocolate and caramel. This was so much better than just a regular bar on its own.

This is part of our Travel in Scotland series showcasing Scottish culture, Scottish arts, Scottish foods, Scottish religion and Scottish people.

What's your name? Sam. Sam how you doing man? We're doing a deep-fried snickers, a Twix and we've already done a Mars bar already. Awesome. I'm going to unwrap it. Stick it in the batter. I can't tell you that because it's my secret. Hahaha...secret recipe? Of course. The Twix. One. Two. Mix it around. Give it a little shake. We fry them separately. This is just for the Mars bars. Mars bars only. Awesome. So the temperature. This is 170 degrees. And while the batter cooks the chocolate will melt. So the batter will cook before the chocolate.
So we've been hearing lots about the Mars bars but Sam here went overboard and tried three different chocolate bars that have been deep fried. So what do you have? Well, at the recommendation of the guy at the chip shop. He recommended I also try the Snickers and the Twix bar, so we've got it all right here. Let's unwrap that. I don't want to drop it here. Okay. Let's see that thing of beauty. Isn't that gorgeous. Alright, so which is which? So I believe this is the Snickers. We've got the two Twixes here and that is the Mars bar. Alright. And you're feeling a little queasy today, so I'm going to be the one trying them all. And you can tell they really feel as though they've been deep-fried and melted. This is flimsy in the hand. Yeah, this is a Mars bar. I can tell from what is seeping out. Take a bite. Oh, Wow.
It's all melted inside. Okay, so you've tried all three. Which was our favorite? Definitely the Snickers. Why? Because I love Snickers bars and this just enhanced it. So, it's not surprising that taking something that is already unhealthy and making it even unhealthier would make it taste better.

Eating Haggis, Neeps and Tatties for lunch in Edinburgh, Scotland travel food video transcript:

Alright boys what is the plan for today? The plan for today is we're going in for Haggis. And we're going to revisit one of my favorite spots that we went in Edinburgh about three years ago. It is called the Whiski Rooms. Are you excited Rob? I am. And I've never actually eaten here but I am a fan of Haggis. Yeah, and Audrey is sitting this one out because she doesn't like Haggis but I think the two of us are going to love it. Yeah, plus we need a cameraman so that is my job for the day. You're the camerawoman for today.

Okay, so let's pretend it someones first time in Scotland and they've never heard of Haggis. What is in it? Yeah. So the name of the game of Haggis basically it is sheep's pluck it contains heart, liver and lungs and it is cooked inside the sheep's stomach and also it has oatmeal, spices and onions so it has got a lot of things going on. It is a very savory dish.

Okay, so what is on the menu for today's lunch? So on the menu for today's lunch is all about the Haggis. We've ordered three different kinds. We're starting off with Haggis spring rolls and then we're getting normal Haggis with neeps and tatties and then we're getting a vegetarian form of Haggis. So we're really covering all the bases and we can't wait to try them all.

So as you can imagine we are at a restaurant called the Whiski Rooms and this place does deliver on the whisky. We're personally not going to have any today but if you do come here you have over 300 to choose from.

So we're starting off with the Haggis spring rolls and man these look good. You can tell they're pipping hot and you can tell they're crispy. So just going to go in and go for a bite.

And then you have this wonderful blend of Haggis in the inside and like they are not skimping out. Like some spring rolls are really small and you're just getting a little bite. Look at how thick that is in there.

Now it is time for the main event. The haggis. I've just got it on a knife like this to demonstrate its consistency. It is kind of like porridge and it is almost like a pate. It is really really rich.

By no means is this a diet friendly meal but it does taste good and it is definitely comfort food for a chilly day. Let's try it.

That's good. And the best way I can describe it is like eating meat porridge.

So I wasn't really planning on being in the video today because I did not want to eat Haggis; however, when we got here we saw that they had vegetarian option on the menu so that is the one I ordered. And as you can see it looks really really similar to the real Haggis. And apparently this one is made with barley, carrots and different vegetables to kind of give it that texture.

How is it?

It is good. It doesn't taste like Haggis so I'm a happy girl.

So neeps and tatties, if you've never tried them before, are basically Scottish for turnips and potatoes. And they're kind of like in a mashed type of consistency. So they're nice and soft. So I'm just going to grab a little bit of both because man they're good. And this is all part of what makes it such a hearty meal is that you're getting a lot of carbs.

Alright, it is time for price point and basically if your'e going to try haggis in Scotland like at this restaurant for example we paid twelve pounds and I think that is a pretty standard price. Um, it is the kind of food that you're going to want to eat on a cold day it is very hearty. It is very filling. And it is one of the most traditional Scottish foods you can try so I highly recommend it. Basically if you're anywhere in Scotland try the Haggis, neeps and tatties. What did you think Rob?

I thought it was good. If your'e going to come all the way to Scotland just try the Haggis. You'll be glad you did.

Our favorite meal in Glasgow, Scotland at the Crafty Pig restaurant and pub

While visiting Glasgow, Scotland for a few days we ended up finding a cool restaurant called the Crafty Pig just a stone throw away from where we were staying. From Monday to Friday they have these amazing lunch specials where you can main, side and a drink for only £4.95. Some of the options for the mains included pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, brisket and chicken wings with sides featuring soups, salads or fries with drink options including a soft drink, tea and/or coffee. I ended up going with the Porky Pig Bun (pulled pork sandwich with barbecue sauce) and Audrey got the Open Brisket sandwich. We each got fries and we upgraded to milkshakes. The behemoth shakes came in the stainless steel milkshake cups used to blend them and probably had a day's worth of calories in each jar. We ended up leaving the place feeling very satisfied. In terms of the atmosphere it definitely has a hipster vibe and looks like a great place to socialize with friends and shoot some pool. Here is the address below:

Our favorite meal in Glasgow, Scotland at the Crafty Pig restaurant and pub travel food video transcript:

So Glasgow is a city for foodies. There is so much great food and today we're bringing you to one of our favorite restaurants The Crafty Pig. Basically everything on the menu is amazing and we've only been here a few days but we just keep coming back.

So it is time for a bit of a confession. There are times when we travel when we find a place that we really like and we just keep coming back.

So they have incredible lunch specials. Yeah, for four pounds 95 you get a feast. It is a feast of a meal. So you basically get your main, you get your choice of sides. We chose fries. They didn't have soup available today but you can also get a soup or a salad and then you get a drink so we both went with tea. And we already showed you that already so let's take a look at this main. Dudes, this is the pulled pork sandwich bun. Oh my gosh. This is amazing. Like take a look at that. Can you see that pulled pork. Yes, I've tried it before and it is mouth watering. You know what just so I can show you guys what the pulled pork looks like.

That is magic in the mouth. What really makes this delicious as well obviously it is tender but then you have this kind of amazing tangy yet sweet sauce that I believe is homemade.

So for mine I went with the brisket open sandwich. Check this out. I'm not even going to try using my hands because it is just going to be so messy. Gosh that looks so good. Look at that beef with a nice glaze.

Barbecue sauce. This is so good. But you've got barbecue sauce on your face. All over my face I bet I do. The meat is like smothered in barbecue sauce it is so good.

Alright, so we got a little greedy and ordered milkshakes, so tell me which one are you having?

These are behemoths. So I'm getting the peanut butter one and before we go on I've just got to tell you what is in this. Like this is amazing stuff. Okay, chocolate and salted caramel ice cream, peanut butter cup pieces, so that is like the Reese's peanut butter cups, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, peanut butter M and M's and whipped cream.

I went for cookies and cream. And if you take a look here I've got a chocolate Oreo and a chocolate chip cookie. Yeah, and that has also been blended into the milkshake. Oh, man. Lots of whipped cream and chocolate sauce all over. That looks divine.

I don't think I'm going to be able to help you out much with that. We definitely could have shared we just got really greedy. Yeah, we're being pigs at a piggy restaurant basically.

And now it is time for price point. So for the set meal part that we had that was four ninety five and that was the tea, that was our basically our sandwich and our fries. Yep. And then the upgraded to the shake and that cost what I think three seventy five each. So, yeah, overall a really satisfying meal and not too expensive. If you had just come for lunch then it would be quite cheap I think.
