COULD YOU EVER TOUCH A LIVING CROCODILE?

When I arrived in Burkina Faso's capital of Ouagadougou yesterday, I was not planning to touch a living crocodile. But I did. And it was absolutely one of the scariest, most thrilling moments of my life.

Could you do ever it?

On Instagram? Join me for better stories there! @DrewBinsky

PS - No crocodiles were harmed in the making of this video. They are considered sacred to the villagers here who have been living side by side for centuries. The locals do not drug them. They do not feed them. These are simply crocs living in their natural habitat. Thanks for watching.

Paga is a small town in the Upper East region of Ghana, lying north of Bolgatanga. Paga is the capital of Kassena Nankana West District, a district in the Upper East Region of north Ghana. The town is located on the border of Burkina Faso and is 166 km south of Ouagadougou via the N5 highway, the main road linking Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Paga is known for its sacred crocodile ponds, where most visitors are surprised that they can touch a live crocodile. Paga is a small town in the Upper East Region and has a population of about 10,000. However, the entire population of Paga – including its outskirts – is over 100,000. Most of the inhabitants are farmers of the Kassena ethnic group, whose settlements and familial ties stretch over the colonial borders of Ghana into what is now Burkina Faso. The idea of different nationalities means little to these people, who see their shared ancestry and ethnicity before what is the recent concept of nationality or religion. Many Kassenas in this small town Paga is multilingual, speaking their native Kasem and English among other languages.

Burkina Faso - The Sacred Crocodiles Of Bazoule

While visiting the west African nation of Burkina Faso, our party spent time in the small village of Bazoule. The locals believe that the spirits of their deceased ancestors live in the crocodiles in a small lake several hundred yards from their village. Two men from the village walked with our small group to the shoreline and summoned the crocodiles with gifts of several live chickens. We took turns sitting on the backs of the crocs, pulling their tails and taking photographs of them.

Their strength was greater than I had imagined and their bite was fast and fierce, but we all made it out alive and completely intact!

Our purpose for visiting Africa was bigger than mere croc wrestling! We went to witness first hand the success of a micro-lending organization aimed at eliminating poverty with small loans (less than $200US) that the women of small villages use as seed money to start small businesses and support thier families. The success of this program is overwhelming! If you would like to learn more about Hope 4 Africa, please click on the link here: or visit their website at Thank you for supporting such a fantastic program.

Also while we were there we spent a few hours at a Compassion International project school and took several students and their parents to lunch at a nearby restaurant. These people are so poor that many of them had never been to a restaurant. We explained how the menu and kitchen worked and the duties of a waiter. They were amazed at all of the food.

It was an awesome time in West Africa.

BURKINA FASO ???????? Best Places in 2024!

Travel to Burkina Faso, and the best places to visit in an off the beaten path West African country that has safari (Nazinga, Tengrela), waterfalls (Karfiguela), wildlife (elephants, hippos), cultural festivals like FESTIMA, incredible music and dance (in Bobo Dialasso especially), nature parks (Domes of Fabredougou, Sindou Peaks), UNESCO ruins (Loropeni), exquisite culture (Grand Mosque) and unique architecture (tiebele). Don't be scared by the media - yes there is terrorist activity, but it's confined to specific parts. My Top 11 things to do in Burkina Faso are mainly away from the danger areas. Still, be safe and hire an experienced guide who is all about SAFETY!

Crocodiles! #2

While studying abroad in Niamey, Niger with Boston University, we went to see the sacred crocodiles of Sabou, in Burkina Faso. There are over 100 that live in this lake. After the guide got the crocodile out of the water (using a chicken on a string) we each got to pet it.

A tour of a local market in Burkina Faso | WIDE

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world nonetheless, it is also one of the most welcoming.

On this new trip, we take you to Gaoua in the southwest of the country, near the border with Côte d'Ivoire. Gaoua is a village whose inhabitants live far from the capital, Ouagadougou. The activity is partly ensured by small farmers who come to sell on the market products of their land. Very few tourists come to Gaoua and even fewer to the market.

A unique opportunity to discover what a local market in Burkina Faso looks like and what kind of wonderful delicacies one can cook with the local products!

UNC professor & video journalist Jim Kitchen visits crocodiles in a Burkina Faso village

In this Burkina Faso village, humans live in peace with and worship the sacred crocodiles. In these villages, it is not uncommon to see people sit atop and coexist with these dangerous reptiles.
