Visit The Netherlands - The Don'ts of The Netherlands

Read the Blog: What Tourists Should Not Do When They Visit The Netherlands

Whether Heading to Amsterdam for a Crazy Night in the Red Light District, or to Haarlem for an architecture and art rendezvouses or to Rotterdam the Netherlands has a lot for people to do when they visit. This video goes over some things you shouldn't do when you go to The Netherlands.
The Don'ts of Visiting The Netherlands. Things Tourists Shouldn't Do in The Netherlands or Holland.
Filmed in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Copyright Mark Wolters 2017

Don't #1. Don't Call The Netherlands, Holland. Holland is actually only two of the twelve counties in The Netherlands.
Don't #2. Don't Think the Netherlands is Just Amsterdam. There are tons of other towns, cities and villages to visit. From the flowers in Keukenhof to the Beauty of Groningen.
Don't #3. Don't Be stupid with Drugs or Alcohol when you visit. The coffeeshops are world famous and you should never buy drugs off the street.
Don't #4. Don't just bite into hot food. The Dutch like their fried food hot as can be, so make sure you take a second to blow on it or else you might lose a few skin cells.
Don't #5. Don't Wander into the Bike Lanes in The Netherlands. Those bikes will get you.
Don't #6, Don't Take the Dutch Attitude Personally. The Dutch are very straightforward and will ask you anything. So don't be upset, just know that is just how they are.
Don't #7. Don't Forget to Bring a chip card with a PIN number for purchasing from person-less kiosks & shops.
Don't #8. Have coins with you so you can pick up a snack on the go.
Don't #9. Don't Be Surprised if you see all the Dutch Tourism Stereotypes when you visit. From wooden shoes to windmills to cheese to really tall people on bikes, you will see them.
Don't #10. Don't forget to buzz your train ticket card when you enter and exit the platforms/stations.
Don't #11. Don't Take pictures of the girls in the windows in the Red Light District.
Don't #12. Don't Take the Hop On Hop Off Bus in Amsterdam. The bus cannot go a lot of places in the historic center. You would be better off on the hop on hop off canal boat.
Don't #13. Don't think that Amsterdam is just the red light district. It is so much more with culture, food, art.
Don't #14. Don't forget to Bring a jacket. It will rain while you are there, even if it says sunny.

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Need some clothing for your next adventure? Patagonia has some pretty good stuff for all kinds of travelers.

Visit The Netherlands - 5 Things You Will Love & Hate about The Netherlands

Visiting the Netherlands is more than just visiting Amsterdam. There are so many wonderful things to see and do, from the architecture and amazing museums to the biking opportunities to all the windmills and flowers, to the bad parts of visiting The Netherlands, the stigma that the Netherlands are just a drunken party for tourists in the red light district of Amsterdam and did we mention the service? Here are five things you will love and hate about visiting the Netherlands.
Filmed in Haarlem and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Copyright Mark Wolters 2018
Hate #1. The Drunk/High Tourists in the Red Light District in Amsterdam: and how they have become a defacto image of The Netherlands, when The Netherlands has so much to offer travelers.
Hate #2. The Stairs: look the stairwells in the Netherlands are more like Ladders so be careful on them. Don't bring heavy bags.
Hate #3. The Service: as much as we love the Dutch people, the service is not something you will write home about. It's professional, but not overly friendly.
Hate #4. The Bike Lanes: Remember, Red is Dead... you will understand the first time you walk into a bike lane in The Netherlands.
Hate #5. The Unpredictable nature of Dutch weather.

Love #1. The Architecture and Culture throughout The Netherlands. The guild houses that will fill up gigs of data on your camera to amazing churches to museums stocked full of amazing art there is so much to enjoy and see in The Netherlands.
Love #2. The Transportation and Tourism Infrastructure: The Netherlands is super easy to get around.
Love #3. That there is so much more to The Netherlands than just Amsterdam: go explore the country, from Haarlem to Groningen to so many more great towns around the country.
Love #3b. The People of the Netherlands: from their amazing English to their great sense of humor to their directness the Dutch can make for a great time.
Love #4. The biking opportunities and easiness of renting bikes and exploring The Netherlands on two wheels.
Love #5. The drinking and snacking opportunities all over the country.

Visit The Netherlands - What to Know Before You Visit The Netherlands

Read the Blog for More Information on The Netherlands:
Heading to The Netherlands & Not Sure What to Expect? Well here we go through the top things that tourists should know when they visit The Netherlands.
1. It is The Netherlands, Not Holland. Holland is the name of two counties in The Netherlands.
2. The language of The Netherlands is Dutch, but as a tourist you really do not need to know any Dutch as the Dutch speak English extremely well throughout the country.
3. The Euro is the currency in The Netherlands and you can find ATMs all over the country. Credit cards are widely accepted as well.
4. The Netherlands is a small country with a very well developed transportation network. Therefore you can easily take trains all over the country in a fast and efficient way. Make sure you tap in and out with your tickets as you enter your platforms.
5. Biking is a very popular pastime and way to get around Dutch cities. There are a number of bike rental agencies throughout The Netherlands. Look for one near a train station and rent a bike for the day to explore, or sign up for one of the numerous bike tours around the country.
6. The Netherlands is rather safe for tourists. Do take care with pickpockets and extremely aggressive beggars in Amsterdam's more popular areas. The bike line is for bikes only so watch out unless you want to get hit by a bike and yelled at by a local.
7. Drugs bring a lot of tourists to Amsterdam and the Dutch/German border. If you are going to The Netherlands to experiment with soft drugs make sure you go to a Coffee House they have menus and trained personnel that can help travelers. We do not recommend you do drugs and highly discourage travelers from doing this. However, we do know a number of tourists do go there for that. So please be safe, and speak with the coffee shop attendant about your previous experiences so they can help you.
9. The best things about the Netherlands are the quaint cities and towns like Haarlem, Leiden, Groningen, as well as the larger cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The architecture and museums throughout the country really are outstanding. And yes you will see quite a few windmills as you explore The Netherlands.
10. The food is hearty in The Netherlands, make sure you try a bitter ballen or a traditional pancake or herring from one of the stalls. The market and food halls have tons of great treats for travelers. There are numerous international restaurants all over The Netherlands as well.
11. The Netherlands is not a cheap place to visit, however the prices are on par with the US & other major European destinations. Amsterdam accomodation will be your biggest expense. Therefore you may want to stay outside of Amsterdam to have a cheaper and more Dutch experience.

We're Michelle and Alex, an American expat couple living abroad in the Netherlands. ????????

Netherlands: Haarlem, Alkmaar, Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Gouda, Maastricht

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Presenting a tour of the Netherlands
0:00 Introduction ; 03:26 Haarlem; 04:31 Alkmaar; 05:45 Leiden; 06:38 The Hague; 07:48 Delft; 08:54 Rotterdam; 10:11 Utrecht; 11:35 Gouda; 12:22 Maastricht ; 13:43 Conclusion
Starting with a visit to Haarlem, then to Leiden, doing a few day trips out from there. Then to Delft for three more nights and excursions to The Hague, political capital of the nation.
Then to Rotterdam the great modern city of the Netherlands, continuing to Utrecht, a university town with a large historic center and then to Maastricht in the southern part of the country. I'll also be going up to the Alkmaar cheese market which is a lot of fun.
This video is a summary of the trip through the Netherlands. We will be presenting short segments about each city here, but we have 22 movies providing a lot more details about these places so be sure to look for them in our collection.
See the 23 Dutch movies here:
Traveling between cities was so easy because the Netherlands has got perhaps the best train system in Europe. It's phenomenal. The trains are clean, fast, frequent and not expensive. This is a small country, so the cities are relatively close together, you can get from one to the next and 15 or 30 minutes usually. This superb rail service in itself makes a good reason to visit this country, shift for it really does eliminate some of those logistical problems of travel, just getting around. It is so easy with these trains.
Some call it Holland, but the country is The Netherlands. Holland is two provinces in the Netherlands.

See the EXTREME BEAUTY of THE NETHERLANDS! (in just one day)

The Netherlands is a BEAUTIFUL country, but instead of reading about it below - just watch the video! We do our best to show you the highlights from our 5+ weeks in The Low Country. For those of you who want to make this a little more fun, here’s a pop quiz for you:

1) What is adventureViV’s secret tip for Amsterdam?
2) How old was adventureViV when she learned how to ride a bicycle?
3) What is the symbol of the Staverden Estate?
4) Where is the 103 bus going in Madurodam?
5) Which shipping company does the creeper in Rotterdam work for?

*Answer in the comments below for a custom adventureViV postcard!*

Groningen: Groningen is a charming student city in the Northern Netherlands and the perfect base for visiting the Netherlands’ barrier islands.

Schiermonnikoog: Due to the influence of the tides and its location between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea, the island has a climate that is different from that of the mainland. Schiermonnikoog is characterized by diverse landscapes including beaches, dunes, forests, tidal marshes, lakes and tidal flats.

Amsterdam: Visit the world-famous 17th century capital of Holland. Go for a boat tour on the canals, and stroll through Vondelpark. Amsterdam’s oldest houses, are a national treasure. Many of these stunning examples of architecture, found around the city’s Canal Ring, date back to the Dutch Golden Age when a building tax was calculated by the width of a property’s façade.

Dokkum: You don't even have to close your eyes to feel like you've gone back a few centuries!

Burum: In this tiny town, you will find Windlust, a smock mill which was officially reopened in 2014 on Nationale Molendag - yes, the Dutch celebrate a National Mills Day.

Naarden: Naarden is an example of a Spanish star fort, complete with fortified walls and a moat.

Staverden: Staverden received its city rights in 1298 from the German King Rudolph but has never really become a true city. Staverden is officially the smallest city in the Netherlands.

The Hague: The Hague is the heart of Dutch politics where you will find beautiful museums filled with Dutch masterpieces. Visit the historic Binnenhof, or admire Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' at the Mauritshuis. Our favorites include Mesdag’s Panorama and Escher in het Paleis.

Madurodam: Visit Madurodam and discover all of Holland in a few hours. Ever since the opening in 1952 Madurodam has been one of the most iconic places in the Netherlands.
Muiderslot: The Muiderslot Castle is one of Holland’s most picturesque medieval castles.

Scheveningen: Let’s go to the beach! The Pier is one of the most notable icons in Scheveningen. Nearly 400 metres long and 45 metres high, it runs straight into the North Sea and offers a beautiful view of the village. *Video correction: the sun is setting over the North Sea (not the Atlantic!)*

Leiden: Leiden is a picturesque university city with many canals, ‘hofjes’ and museums. Leiden also has its own Hortus Botanicus, an impressive university garden filled with plants from around the world.

Rotterdam: Rotterdam is a city of many faces: a tough port city, a trendy modern city, and a hip artistic city. Check out the Maritime Museum when in Rotterdam to learn about Rotterdam’s role as a port city. Don’t miss a walk over the Erasmus Bridge. At its highest point, the Erasmus bridge is 139-meters tall. Known as the 'Erasmusbrug' in Dutch, the bridge has also been lovingly nicknamed The Swan (‘De Zwaan’) by locals due to the distinctive shape of that one, asymmetrical pylon.

Zoetermeer: It’s got everything you need! Zoetermeer was our homebase for our entire stay in the Netherlands - thanks to our wonderful hosts! We miss our daily trips to Albert Heijn in the Meerzicht with Miss Moneypenny. We’ll be back soon!

NEXT TIME: Catch us chasing summer in Portugal!

This time: The Netherlands!

So tiny and though so great, an ever thriving country from the East Indies times in the Golden age to an important main hub in Europe. Mostly under sea level, the Dutch got skilled winning land and fighting water, which led to engineering masterpieces like the Delta works. A modern community where the cities are big cosy villages, people go by bike, eat stroopwafels and cheese. In the Netherlands whether you like traditional mills and clogs or mingle in easily in the hotchpotch of cultures, Gogh and Rembrandt, or a stroll along the dikes, you won’t be bored.

In this episode Rotterdam, Hotel New York, it's giant port, city life and the Euromast, an airborn view over the city, The flower capital of Lisse, pittoresque Delft and the porcelain of Royal Blue Delft, Zaanstad en the historic site of De Zaanse Schans and last but no least the engineering miracle of the Deltaworks.
