Sisters' Islands are two of the Southern Islands in Singapore and are located to the south of the main island of Singapore, off the Straits of Singapore. It can be taken by a boat from Marina South Pier or West Coast Pier.

Follow Us as we share with you our recent day trip to Big Sister Island (aka Pulau Sabar Laut in Berhasa Melayu).
We took the ferry service provided by Marina South Ferries which operate from Marina South Pier, accessible via the MRT. Marina South Ferries provide ferry services to Big Sister Island on weekends only. Besides this service, they also provide ferry services to St. John's Island and Kusu Island, plus a suite of other services including private chartered harbour craft hire. Do check out their service offerings via the website provided below.
In this vlog, we share with you what we did on Big Sister Island. As shown in our previous vlog, we had our guest Jeff, who is a certified tour guide and helps to shed light on the history and biodiversity of the island a little.
Besides basking in the sun while it shines, we also swam a little in the lagoon and observe some of the marine life lurking beneath the surface of the warm waters. We even brought our tent along so we could safe-keep our belongings away from the watchful eyes of the monkeys who might be aggressive we were told. A little picnic session ensues as afternoon approaches and we take comfort in the fact that cabanas are available on this island which helped shield us from the rain which became a little heavy.
We would recommend this itinerary to anyone craving for a getaway from the hustle and bustle of city living on mainland Singapore. Cruising into the embrace of nature periodically not only helped us to recharge but also provided a refreshing experience for city dwellers like ourselves! :D

Sisters' Islands - Pulau Subar Laut & Pulau Subar Darat | SingaporeIsland
Big Sister's Island, about 39,000 square metres (9.6 acres) in area and also known as Pulau Subar Laut in Malay, faces the open sea, while Little Sister's Island, about 17,000 m2 (4.2 acres) in area and also known as Pulau Subar Darat, faces the mainland. The two islands are separated by a narrow channel. The Sisters’ Islands Marine Park is Singapore’s first marine park and was opened by Minister of State Desmond Lee on 17 July 2014.
Once upon a time, there was a middle-aged widow who lived with her two daughters, Lina and Minah, on an island near Singapore. When their mother passed away, the girls had to join their uncle in his village. The sisters were very close and promised to be together forever.
One fateful day, while drawing water form a well, Lina caught the lustful eye of the Chief of a group of merciless sea gypsies. He immediately demanded Lina to be his wife. Frightened, Lina went to Minah for help, but the Chief told her uncle that if Lina refused to marry him, he would harm the villagers.
The next day, the Chief charged into the village and dragged Lina out of her home and onto his boat. Minah begged for Lina’s freedom but the Chief pushed her away. Since Minah could not stop the boat from setting sail, she ran heedlessly into the waves but was engulfed by a large wave. Remembering their promise to always be together, Lina broke free from her captors, and jumped into the sea to join her beloved sister.
The dark clouds which loomed overhead unleashed a ferocious storm which continued till the next day. When the storm ceased, two islands stood where the sisters were claimed by the sea. The islands were then named Sisters’ Islands.

“The Sisters’ Islands” is a programmatic concerto for double Zhongruan and Chinese orchestra, inspired by a local legend of the Sisters’ Islands south of Singapore. The 13-minute piece features four sections:
1. Fishing Village: A strike of the gong opens the piece, introducing the peaceful tropical scenery of Singapore. The orchestra evokes the ebbs and tides with wave-like patterns in Indonesian Gamelan style, playing in the pentatonic “pelog selisir” scale. The broad “sea” theme is presented first by the solo Ruan, and then the bowed strings. The following graceful “sisters” theme represents the beautiful young Malay sisters Minah and Linah in an “asli” dance. The music then proceeds into a lively Malay “zapin” dance portraying the festivities in the village.
2. Capture of the Bride: Suddenly, a throng of pirates raids the village, illustrated by the menacing “pirates” theme in a hexatonic scale. The captain, awestruck by Linah’s beauty, intends to abduct her as a bride. A weeping Ruan melody implores the release of Linah but to no avail as she is dragged away, and a fast descending scale represents Minah stumbling into the sea to chase after the pirate ship.
3. Raging Waves: Bass instruments play a transformed “sea” theme, while woodwind glissandi in octatonic scale and percussion effects depict the stormy sea. A struggling “sisters” theme emerges amidst the chaos as Minah swims after the pirates, until she is overcome by exhaustion and disappears amidst the raging waves. Linah struggles to break free of her captors and jumps into the sea to join her sister. This tragedy incurs the wrath of the gods; thunder and lightning strike, and a giant orchestral wave engulfs the pirate ship. After a long timpani roll, calmness is restored.
4. Spirit of the Sea: In the morning, a conch (seashell) calls out for the sisters’ spirits to rest in peace. The “sea” and “sisters” themes are recapitulated and finally played together in counterpoint, building up to a climatic ending as two islands emerge from the sea where the sisters drowned.
Composed by WANG Chenwei at age 17, “The Sisters' Islands” won the Singapore Composer Award at the 2006 Singapore International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition. Originally scored for Chinese Orchestra, this piece was later re-arranged into a double Zhongruan concerto by the composer.
双中阮协奏曲《姐妹岛》取材于新加坡岸外姐妹岛的民间传说，全曲长13 分钟，分为四段：
(一) 渔岛：低音锣一声鸣响，拉开了乐曲的序幕。乐队以印尼甘美兰风格的波浪式音形和 pelog selisir 五声音阶烘托出一望无际的大海和蕉风椰雨的渔岛风光，双中阮和胡琴先后呈示出宽广的「海」主题。大合奏之后，轻盈优美的「姐妹」主题描述一对年轻马来姐妹米娜与丽娜的Asli舞姿。双中阮接下来在马来手鼓的伴奏下进入一段欢快的Zapin舞乐段。
(二) 抢婚：突然，胡琴响起阴森的颤音；中阮弹出凶悍的「海盗」主题，一伙海盗冲进渔村，首领强掳丽娜为妻。悲伤的姐妹苦苦哀求海盗放手，但海盗拖着丽娜乘船扬长而去，米娜随着疾速下行音阶哭喊着追入海里。
(三) 怒涛：急促的快板和八声音阶调式展现了暴风骤雨的场面。低音乐器奏出「海」主题，吹管和敲击乐器模仿汹涌的波涛。在一片混乱之中，「姐妹」主题再次出现；精疲力竭的米娜消失在惊涛骇浪中。船上的丽娜眼见失去唯一的亲人，猛力挣脱海盗的魔掌跃入大海。这一幕触怒了上天，刹那间雷电交加，一股巨浪吞噬了海盗船。在一阵定音鼓的滚奏后，一切恢复平静。
(四) 海魂：次日清晨，深沉的海螺声缓缓响起，为姐妹安魂。村民们回到岸边，惊见海面上浮现出两座相依而立的小岛。双中阮再现「海」主题，胡琴奏起悠扬的「姐妹」主题，最后「海」与「姐妹」两个主题以复调手法同时呈现，把乐曲推向高潮的尾声，象征溶入大海的一对情深姐妹化为永恒的海岛。
王辰威17岁创作华乐合奏《姐妹岛》，在2006年新加坡国际华乐作曲大赛中获「新加坡作曲家奖」，随后改编为双中阮协奏曲等多种不同乐器组合的版本。

What to do if you miss the Ferry pick-up from Sisters’ Islands, Kusu Island or St. John Island
Follow Us made a boo boo in our recent island hopping trip to Big Sister's Island which is part of the Singapore Southern Islands.
While we were very engrossed in keeping a look-out for low-tide timings to check out the marine life beneath the lagoon which we were having a soak in, we failed to notice that Jim's mobile phone had switched to an Indonesian network provider setting the time on his phone back by an hour. We were essentially stranded on the island, albeit momentarily as we recalled the advice provided by Marina South Ferries, the only ferry company which provides the weekend trip to Big Sister's Island.
In this vlog, we share with you how we execute the Rescue Follow Us mission and what you should do if you miss the scheduled ferry pick-up time from the Southern Islands. We ringed Marina South Ferries up and were told that we could hire a 'rescue boat' for S$90 to bring us back to mainland Singapore. A small price to pay as compared to the inconvenience of being marooned on an island without sufficient food and drink supplies.
Let this be a little lesson for all us and a big tip for you to bear in mind in case contingencies like ours crop up while you were enjoying your island hopping adventures!

Sisters’ Islands are hidden gems located off the south coast of Singapore. It is also a designated Marine Park, which means that you can expect plenty of biodiversities and relatively clear water.
There are 2 islands in Sisters’ Islands Marine Park:
1. Big Sister’s Island (Pulau Subar Laut)
2. Small Sister’s Island (Pulau Subar Darat)
The Small Sister’s island is not open to the public. It is currently being used for research and conservation to promote species recovery and habitat enhancement.
The Big Sister’s Island is the epitome of off-the-beaten-path. It is really secluded because it doesn’t receive as many visitors as other Southern Islands, like St. John’s Island and Kusu Island.
