Exploring TIKAL, The Most Impressive Mayan Ruins In Guatemala

The EPIC view of Tikal really took our breath away. We spent the day exploring the most beautiful Maya ruins in Guatemala. Tikal National Park is home to over 60.000 buildings of which only a fraction has been excavated. The temples are situated in the middle of the jungle. The surroundings really give it an impressive atmosphere. As we were walking in the jungle between the temples, we came across a bunch of wildlife, which was a really cool extra. We highly recommend to visit Tikal, as it is such an amazing site to explore. You can hire a guide at the entrance to give you a tour. We recommend staying on the beautiful island of Flores, where you can easily book a tour to visit the temples of Tikal.

For almost a millennium, the ancient ruins of great architecture lay buried beneath the jungle vegetation on the Yucatan Peninsula. Abandoned by their creators these ancient temples and pyramids are a stunning reminder of a powerful civilization that once ruled the people of Central America. GUATEMALA: The incredible Mayan ruins of Tikal National Park ????️, let's go!

Tikal National Park in Guatemala, Central America - tour of Tikal in Guatemala, the Tikal ruins in Guatemala, South America. Tikal is the ruin of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala. Tikal is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Tikal is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala. Situated in the department of El Petén, Tikal is part of Guatemala's Tikal National Park and in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tikal was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Though monumental architecture at the site dates back as far as the 4th century BCE, Tikal reached its apogee during the Classic Period, c. 200 to 900 CE. During this time, the city dominated much of the Maya region politically, economically, and militarily, while interacting with areas throughout Mesoamerica such as the great metropolis of Teotihuacan in the distant Valley of Mexico. There is evidence that Tikal was conquered by Teotihuacan in the 4th century CE. Following the end of the Late Classic Period, no new major monuments were built at Tikal and there is evidence that elite palaces were burned. These events were coupled with a gradual population decline, culminating with the site's abandonment by the end of the 10th century.

Ancient City of Tikal, Guatemala [Amazing Places 4K]

Tikal was the capital of a great Maya city-state, one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Today Tikal is a site of expansive Mayan ruins deep in the jungle, in the rainforests of northern Guatemala.

Tikal became an important ceremonial center between 300 B.C.E. and 100 C.E. and reached its apogee between 300 and 850 C.E., with its great plazas, pyramids, and palaces. By 900 A.D., after hundreds of years of prosperity, like many of the other Mayan states, the great city of Tikal collapsed (although some cities like Chichen Itza, continued to flourish for centuries).
Tikal is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Recorded November 2021 in 4K Ultra HD with Sony AX700 and DJI Pocket 2.

Sound in the video: original natural sounds of the jungle, recorded in Tikal National Park. The roar at the beginning of the video comes from a monkey species called Howler monkey.

Guide to visiting Flores & Tikal Guatemala (2019) Mayan Ruins

In this episode we stay on in the picturesque town of Flores in Guatemala and share with you our experience of visiting the Mayan site of Tikal.

Flores is a small and beautiful town located on and island in a lake. The island is easily accessible as it is connected to .the mainland by a bridge. We show you all the island. Flores is a meca for tourist arriving in Guatemala from Belize or as a final stop before heading to Belize and is the main place that tourists stay to visit the Mayan Ruins of Tikal.

We took a day tour to the Mayan Ruins of Tikal, which are located approximate one and a half hours drive from Flores. A site filled with mystery - make sure you have a guided tour as the guides are very knowledgable and without them you would be walking around the ruins and tikal without learning anything about the Mayan history or way of life - they're also great for spotting and pointing our wildlife on the way.

We recommend visiting Tikal early in the morning as by 11am the weather is very hot and nearly 40 degrees celsius. We left at 4.30am and there is a tour that leaves around 3am if you want to watch the sun rise over the ruins.

Thanks for watching

Tikal (/tiˈkɑːl/) (Tik’al in modern Mayan orthography) is the ruin of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala. It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala. Tikal is the best understood of any of the large lowland Maya cities, with a long dynastic ruler list, the discovery of the tombs of many of the rulers on this list and the investigation of their monuments, temples and palaces.

Guatemala: Tikal Temple 4 Sunrise Tour in 4K ancient Mayan Ruins in Jungle of Central America

Guatemala: Tikal Temple 4 Sunrise Tour in the ancient Mayan Ruins in the Jungle of Central America

Our last stop in Guatemala was the Unesco world heritage site and Mayan Ruins of Tikal which is a national park. Visiting Tikal for the sunrise tour can be tricky because you need to buy your tickets before at the main gate which does not open until later in the morning. If you don't buy them ahead of time, you will not be admitted. You can also buy them at various banks around the country ahead of time.
We got up and hurriedly walked about 20 minutes from the Tikal Inn which was one of two accommodations inside the park. Along the way we dodged harmless tarantulas using our headlamps and flashlights. We climbed the long stairs in the dark to the top of Temple IV which faces eastward and listened to the sounds of the jungle provided by a variety of birds and prehistoric sounding howler monkeys. The dawn can often be cloudy so be aware that you may not actually see the rising sun. After the sun had risen, we tromped back down the stairway and had a brief guided tour of the complex which included the Mundo Perdido and the accropolis with the jaguar temple and stellas. We headed back to the Tikal Inn which had a pool and restaurant for the rest of the afternoon to catch up on our sleep watch spider monkeys and birds as we rested for our trip to Belize the next day.

4K 360 - City Walks: Tikal, Guatemala - Explore the Ruins of the Ancient Mayan City

This is a comparison (a/b test) to see if people prefer the 360 experience or the standard 2D.
To access the 2D Version go here:

Please let me know which you prefer.

This is a walk through of the ancient Mayan city of Tikal in Guatemala. It is one of the largest and best restored of the mayan ruins. The walk starts in the late afternoon from Temple 4 from which you can look back east over the rest of the city. However, the ruins are only 20percent restored so most of the city is still shrouded in jungle with a few temples sticking up out of the trees. Ironically, it is those trees that hold the stones of the unrestored city in place. It was a hot day in the jungle but we hear birds and see spider monkeys jumping from a tree onto one of the temples.
I hope you enjoy this version of the walk but please let me know which you prefer.

Tikal is an ancient Mayan citadel in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. Possibly dating to the 1st century A.D., Tikal flourished between 200 and 850 A.D. and was later abandoned. Its iconic ruins of temples and palaces include the giant, ceremonial Lost World (Mundo Perdido) Pyramid and the Temple of the Grand Jaguar. At 70 meters, Temple IV is the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas.
Did you know: The dynastic line of Tikal, founded as early as the 1st century AD, spanned 800 years and included at least 33 rulers. wikipedia.org

The Most Incredible Mayan Ruins (Tikal, Guatemala)

Located in the jungle, Tikal was the capital of the one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. I had visited Mayan ruins also before, but this one turned out to be much cooler than any of the other ones I had seen. Less tourists, more to see and less salesmen.

Mayan Ruins in Tikal Guatemala

Our primary goal in visiting Guatemala was to see the Mayan temples in Tikal. It is located in a national park in a remote part of Guatemala near Belize. It was spectacular. Just in case all mayhem breaks out on 21 December 2012 at the end of the Mayan calendar, we said a prayer to the Mayan Sun God on the altar of Temple 2.
