The Favela Entrepreneur ????????

■ BRAZIL, RIO DE JANEIRO: I've always preferred markets and street food over restaurants and modern shopping malls. The price is better, you're outside and you get served instantly without a wait. But what does it take to operate as a street vendor? Who are the entrepreneurs who go through the hassle of having to wheel a business into the desired location day after day, year after year? And what is it like to be an entrepreneur in a bureaucratic mess of a country like Brazil where there are more rules, laws and regulations on the books than citizens?

A couple of days ago I was introduced to Oberdan Santos by a mutual friend of ours. Mr Santos is an entrepreneur, father and volunteer at his local church, who a little under two years ago, left his hometown of Manaus to live in one of Rio De Janeiro's many favelas looking to improve his plight and job opportunities.

He started selling food and candy for established street vendors as he had done back in his hometown Manaus but quickly excelled to the point where he decided to start for himself selling Acai, an ice-cream type of snack popular where he was born.

As soon as he told his story I asked if I could tag along the following day to document his daily life as an entrepreneur on one of Rio's most famous beaches: Leblond.

This video shows everything that transpired on said day....

???????? PARAISÓPOLIS, SÃO PAULO | I entered a FAVELA alone and THIS happened! | Brazil Travel 2022

PARAISÓPOLIS, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL - Part 3 of my 2022 Brazil Travel series comes from Paraisópolis, one of Brazil's largest favelas with a population estimated to be between 80-100k, located in São Paulo, Brazil's MEGACITY!

Yes, you read the title correctly - foreigner goes to a favela alone and this is what happened! Note that I do NOT advise visiting a favela solo. It is best to visit a favela on an organised tour OR with a local who can show you around. These areas are somewhat if not totally neglected by local governments, therefore they are generally run by cartels or other organisations, meaning as a foreigner, you may be in danger. Is Brazil dangerous? Is Brazil safe? We should ask these questions and remember our risk tolerances are different. I have been filming in places like this for years, you may not feel as comfortable as me.

The intention of this video was to quash misconceptions of favelas or slums (or less affluent areas - the word favela or slum can come across as derogatory) and to highlight a real POSITIVE going on right now. Brasil Favela Xpress is a company set up by Giva Pereira, a delivery service set up during the Covid-19 pandemic to allow access to deliveries and to create employment opportunities for locals. A FANTASTIC initiative! We also have some AMAZING Brazilian food, Pastel de Queijo!

Favela Rocinha, The BIGGEST Favela in Brasil - Walking Tour Rio de Janeiro

Welcome to Brasil.

Rocinha is the largest favela in Brazil, located in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea. Rocinha is built on a steep hillside overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and is located about one kilometre from a nearby beach.

Most of the favela is on a very steep hill, with many trees surrounding it. Around 100,000 people live in Rocinha, making it the most populous favela in Brazil.

Buona visione!❤

$0.85 Gongo Hunt Zanzibar ????????

■ TANZANIA, ZANZIBAR: Every country have their own homebrew. In Zanzibar it's known as Gongo. But it's not easy to come by. After spending the better half of the day failing at finding a barber shop to make a haircut video, it suddenly dawned on me that a Gongo hunt would make for more entertaining viewing. Plus, I was kind of thirsty ????

The only problem was that everywhere I'd asked for Gongo previously that day had no idea what I was talking about (partly because I used a different term for it as you can see at the start of the vid; puree). So I needed to enlist a local for some help. Enter Zanzibar's greatest motorbike driver and the man with the coolest and least YouTube friendly name on the whole island: Mr. Faki Party Taxi !!!

The Cuban government has implemented various policies to mitigate the impact of economic challenges on its citizens. For example, the country operates a dual currency system. The CUC is primarily used in the tourist sector, while the CUP is used by locals for basic goods and services. However, this system has led to inequality in the distribution of wealth, with those working in the tourist sector receiving higher wages than those in other sectors.

What Is CUBA Like Today? Life in Cuba today is characterized by a sense of community and togetherness. Despite the economic challenges, Cubans are known for their resilience and resourcefulness. The country has a rich culture and is home to world-renowned artists, musicians, and writers.

Program Highlights: Entrepreneurship in Brazil

This module was one of four we developed for the University of Northern Iowa virtual study abroad program on business in Latin America. The module includes a live video tour, an introduction to Brazil with Google Earth and other media, and a conversation with a social entrepreneur based in Sao Paolo.

Motorbike ride through a favela in Rio, Brazil

Start filming now said the ex-drugsdealer/my guide at the top of the hill in a favela. I had no idea where we were going, but did as instructed.
Guide Fabio takes Esther Jacobs on an adrenaline filled ride down stairs, through the narrow streets of a favela near complexo Allemao. You don't see them in the video, but I saw many kids under ten carrying huge automatic weapons and guns.
Fabio supports a charity that provides role models and distraction to help these street children, to keep them out of the drugs world.
Want to help and try an adventurous tour, too?

Thanks for watching! Please let me know what you think in the comments.

Who’s that girl?

Esther Jacobs (The Netherlands, 1970) is an international (TEDx) speaker and author. She gave more than 1000 keynotes, inspiring entrepreneurs and decision makers of organizations like Capgemini, KLM, Philips and universities on 5 continents to transform their challenges into opportunities. Esther published and contributed to 16 books and helped over 50 entrepreneurs write theirs.

“Opportunity often comes disguised as misfortune or temporary defeat.” – Napoleon Hill

As a pioneer and entrepreneur Esther became an expert in getting results with limited resources. The “No Excuses Lady” proves that you can turn even the bleakest situation into an opportunity:

• Raised $25 million for charities without a budget, network or experience. Got knighted by the Dutch Queen.
• Survived a reality TV show on a deserted island.
• Turned her relationship with a playboy into a bestselling book: ‘Have you found your Mr. Wrong yet?‘
• Got ‘fired’ from her country for traveling too much; became a digital nomad, living and working in 100+ countries. The very government that expelled her, is now consulting her on how to solve this issue for future mobile generations.
