Capernaum, the town of Jesus

Join our Telegram channel for exclusive videos:

Kefar Nahum is the town which was the center of Jesus’ ministry in northern Galilee and the town of where Peter’s mother-in-law lived.

Located on the north-west side of the lake of Galilee, the ruins of Capernaum are divided into two sites: the Franciscan and the Greek Orthodox.

Unlike Jerusalem and other touristy ancient places in Israel, Capernaum seems to be untouched, still in its raw form. Just by walking here, and looking at the lake, the hills, the mountains, we felt connected to its history. It is as if we could almost see Jesus walking on these shores, looking at the same hills.

And besides the breathtaking nature, Capernaum has fascinating ruins. A 4th-century synagogue built on top of the original one where Jesus taught, a house which is believed to be the house of Simon Peter the apostle, and much more.

Join us in this episode as we explore this fascinating place.

Season 2, Episode 5

* Narration correction: The land was purchased on 1894, not 1908.

Capernaum - The town of Jesus

Israel video tour with David Hyman, professional tour guide. The Galilee town of Capernaum is the town mentioned most times in the New Testament after Jerusalem. Capernaum is the mispronunciation of the Hebrew name Kfar (village) of Nachum. The town was one of the Judean fishing towns along the northern shore of the lake, that thrived during the first century CE, and the main income was from fishing, farming, and possibly trade as the town was a border town on the ancient highway leading north to Damascus. The Gospels tell us the Jesus left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum for about three years, in which the town became the base of Jesus's ministry in Galilee. This is where Jesus performed many of the miracles of healing and exorcism, from here Jesus went on his journies to Banias, Kursi, Sidon, and the Mount of Beatitudes. From here Jesus boarded the boat to preach from the sea and it is here where Jesus recruited his first four disciples, all fishermen from this region. Our tour will take us to the highlights of Capernaum, which were excavated and restored by the Franciscan fryers. First, we will visit the White Synagogue dating to the 4th century AD and the display f the engraved stone items. Then we will observe the ruins of Jesus's room in Saint Peter's home and the modern church that was built above them. We will end with a relaxing and meditative stroll along the waters of Lake Kineret - The Sea of Galilee.

The town of Jesus ( Capernaum ) - Sea of Galilee Israel

Zahi Shaked A tour guide in Israel and his camera zahigo25@walla.com +972-54-6905522 tel סיור עם מורה הדרך ומדריך הטיולים צחי שקד 0546905522
My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Location
1. Capernaum is located on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.
2. Capernaum was located on the Via Maris, which was the main international highway of the known world during the time of Christ.
3. Today, Capernaum is shared between two sites. The Franciscan site receives around 90% of visitors as it has the synagogue, Peter’s home, village ruins, ancient artifacts, and access to the beach. The Greek Orthodox site has chosen to remain unexcavated and serene.

Historical Background
1. The name Capernaum is derived from two words, Caper, which means village, and Naum, which means rest, and is also from the title, Nahum. Therefore, some believe that the town was named after the Prophet Nahum, and some believe it was simply a place of rest.
2. Capernaum was a fishing village with a population of around 1,000 during the time of Christ. It encompassed what is today both the Franciscan and Greek Orthodox sites.
3. Capernaum became the hometown of Jesus after He moved from his boyhood home of Nazareth. It also became the ministry base of Christ during His ministry on earth (Matthew 4:13–17).
4. Capernaum is mentioned more than any other town around the Sea of Galilee.
5. Capernaum was also the home of Peter, James, Andrew, John, and Matthew.
6. The Synagogue in Capernaum was built by a Roman Centurion of whom Jesus healed his servant.
7. The synagogue that existed during Christ’s time is made from black basalt stone, and its foundations are under the current synagogue, built out of limestone.
8. The current synagogue was built in the 4th century and was quite luxurious and impressive.
9. The home of the Apostle Peter has been identified and now has a large modern church built over it. The location of Peter’s home is certain and has been verified by many substantial archaeological excavations.
10. Greek Orthodox site of Capernaum. This church was built in 1931 and dedicated to the twelve apostles.

Capernaum in the Bible
1. Christ left Nazareth to live and set up His ministry base in Capernaum (Matthew 4:13-16).
2. Jesus frequently taught in the Synagogue in Capernaum (Mark 1:21–28).
3. Jesus healed Peter’s mother and many others here in Capernaum (Mark 1:29–34).
4. In Capernaum, Jesus forgave and healed a paralyzed man. This likely happened right at the home where Jesus lived (Mark 2:1–5).
5. Christ marveled at the great faith of a centurion in Capernaum (Luke 7:1–10).
6. The Parables of the Kingdom were preached close to Capernaum (Matthew 13:1–3).
7. The miracle of Peter getting money out of the mouth of a fish to pay the temple tax for himself and Jesus happened in Capernaum (Matthew 17:24-27).
8. Jesus called Matthew, the tax collector, close to Capernaum (Matthew 9:9).
9. Capernaum was one of the three towns Christ cursed because of their unbelief in Him (Matthew 11:23–24).

Faith Lesson from Capernaum
1. Christ astonished the large crowds who followed him because He taught with authority. He was completely different from all other teachers because He was God in the flesh. Are we astonished today as we read Christ’s teachings in His Word?
2. Christ healed multitudes of people in and around Capernaum. He also showed He was God as He forgave their sins. Forgiving sins is something only God can do. Do we believe Christ was God in the flesh and full deity?
3. Christ marveled at the great faith of a Roman Centurion. Do we trust God in such a way that He would marvel at our faith?
4. Unfortunately, Christ cursed the town of Capernaum because of their unbelief in Him. After all they had seen, and after many of them had been healed by Jesus, they still were filled with unbelief. Unbelief is, therefore, a sin. Do we have unbelief in Christ and who He claimed to be? Do we also have unbelief in trusting Him in our daily lives when things don’t seem to make sense?

The story of Capernaum (Sea of Galilee, Israel) - where Jesus lived as he carried out his mission

Capernaum (/kəˈpɜːrniəm, -neɪəm/ kə-PUR-nee-əm, -nay-əm;[1] Hebrew: כְּפַר נַחוּם‎, romanized: Kfar Naḥūm, lit. 'Nahum's village'; Arabic: كفر ناحوم‎, romanized: Kafr Nāḥūm) was a fishing village established during the time of the Hasmoneans, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.[2] It had a population of about 1,500.[3] Archaeological excavations have revealed two ancient synagogues built one over the other.[4] A house turned into a church by the Byzantines is believed to have been the home of Saint Peter.[4]

Capernaum's 4th-century synagogue (detail with columns and benches)
The village was inhabited continuously from the 2nd century BC to the 11th century AD, when it was abandoned sometime before the Crusader conquest.[5] This includes the re-establishment of the village during the Early Islamic period soon after the 749 earthquake.

The town is cited in all four gospels (Matthew 4:13, 8:5, 11:23, 17:24, Mark 1:21, 2:1, 9:33, Luke 4:23, 31,7:1, 10:15, John 2:12, 4:46, 6:17, 24, 59) where it was reported to have been the hometown of the tax collector Matthew, and located not far from Bethsaida, the hometown of the apostles Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John. Some readers take Mark 2:1 as evidence that Jesus may have owned a home in the town, but it is more likely that he stayed in the house of one of his followers here. He certainly spent time teaching and healing there. One Sabbath, Jesus taught in the synagogue in Capernaum and healed a man who was possessed by an unclean spirit (Luke 4:31–36 and Mark 1:21–28). This story is notable as the only one that is common between the gospels of Mark and Luke, but not contained in the Gospel of Matthew (see Synoptic Gospels for more literary comparison between the gospels). Afterward, Jesus healed Simon Peter's mother-in-law of a fever (Luke 4:38–39). According to Luke 7:1–10 and Matthew 8:5, this is also the place where Jesus healed the servant of a Roman centurion who had asked for his help. Capernaum is also the location of the healing of the paralytic lowered by friends through the roof to reach Jesus, as reported in Mark 2:1–12 and Luke 5:17–26.

In Matthew 9:1 the town is referred to only as his own city, and the narrative in Matthew 9:2–7 does not mention the paralytic being lowered through the roof. Most traditional biblical commentators (e.g. Bengel, Benson and the Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary) assume that in Matthew 9:1–7 his own city means Capernaum, because of the details that are common to the three synoptic gospels.[9]

According to the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus selected this town as the center of his public ministry in Galilee after he left the small mountainous hamlet of Nazareth (Matthew 4:12–17). He also formally cursed Capernaum, along with Bethsaida and Chorazin, saying you will be thrown down to Hades! (Matthew 11:23) because of their lack of faith in him as the Messiah.
In 1838, American explorer Edward Robinson discovered ruins which he identified as those of a synagogue, but did not relate this to ancient Capernaum.[14] In 1866, Charles William Wilson identified the location (then known as Tel Hum) as Capernaum. In 1894, Franciscan Friar Giuseppe Baldi of Naples, the Custodian of the Holy Land, was able to purchase a good part of the land around the ruins. Additional land on the eastern portion of the site became the property of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem.[15]

In 1905, Germans Heinrich Kohl and Carl Watzinger began a study of Galilean synagogues.[16] These were continued by Franciscans Fathers Vendelin von Benden (1905–1915) and Gaudenzio Orfali (1921–1926). The excavations resulted in the discovery of two public buildings, the synagogue (which was partially restored by Fr Orfali), and an octagonal church.[15]

In 1968, excavation of the western portion of the site—the portion owned by the Franciscans—was resumed by Virgilio Corbo and Stanislao Loffreda. During this phase, the major discovery was of a 1st-century house which may have been believed to be the home of St. Peter.[4] These excavations have been ongoing, with some publication on the Internet as recently as 2003.[17]

The excavations revealed that the site was established at the beginning of the Hasmonean period, roughly in the 2nd century BC, and abandoned in the 11th century.[4]

The eastern half of the site, which is owned by the Orthodox Monastery of the Holy Apostles, centered on the red-roofed Church of the Holy Apostles, was surveyed and partially excavated under the direction of Vassilios Tzaferis. This section has uncovered the village from the Byzantine and Early Arab periods. Features include a pool apparently used for the processing of fish, and a hoard of gold coins (Tzaferis, 1989).

1. Capernaum is located on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.
2. Capernaum was located on the Via Maris, which was the main international highway of the known world during the time of Christ.
The Via Maris linked the three continents of Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Travelers were forced to use this route as there were few other options for traveling to and from each continent.
The north shore of the Sea of Galilee was even more traveled than the roads and routes leading through Jerusalem.
It might appear that Christ set up His ministry base in a remote place. However, just the opposite was true. He chose the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (and Capernaum was located at a key place along the Via Maris) as a center stage so His message would reach as many as possible in the world.
By spending most of His ministry time in the northern Galilee area, Christ’s miracles traveled by word of mouth to the ends of the earth. This laid the groundwork and sowed the seeds of the gospel to the rest of the known world. As a result, evangelism done later on by the apostles would be easier and more acceptable.
3. Today, Capernaum is shared between two sites. The Franciscan site receives around 90% of visitors as it possesses the synagogue, Peter’s home, village ruins, ancient artifacts, and nice access to the beach. The Greek Orthodox site has chosen to remain basically unexcavated and serene.

Biblical Bethsaida (El Araj): Home of Peter, Andrew, Capernaum, Sea of Galilee, Jordan River Inlet

An in-depth look at the Bible events, location, and discoveries of ancient Bethsaida at the El Araj site. Peter, Andrew, and Philip were from this fishing town, and then later moved to Capernaum. This new location of Bethsaida has been recently discovered and we believe it is the true location. DONATE:

Location
1. Currently, there are two leading candidates for the true location of Bethsaida. Both are located on the northeastern side of the Sea of Galilee. The traditional site is called, Et Tell and the new location is called, El Araj.
2. We know from the Bible that Bethsaida was in a desolate, remote place with little population.
Luke 9:10: The apostles, when they had returned, told him what things they had done. He took them and withdrew apart to a deserted place of a city called Bethsaida.
3. The northwestern side of the Sea of Galilee was densely populated in Jesus’ time, but the northeastern side where Bethsaida was located was desolate.
4. Bethsaida was a fishing village on the Sea of Galilee. In fact, its name means “House of Fishing.”
5. In John 1:44, we find that at least 3 disciples were from here, “Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.” We also know that at least Peter and Andrew were fishermen, so they lived in Bethsaida to be close to the sea.
6. The traditional site of Bethsaida is located almost 2 miles from the Sea of Galilee.
• This presents a challenge as Bethsaida was a fishing village right on the Sea of Galilee.
• Some have suggested the water level was higher back in Jesus’ day, but this is not the case as Capernaum, Magdala, and other towns are right on the sea. If the water level had been higher, these other towns could not have existed.
• Pliny the Elder, a first-century Roman writer, called Bethsaida “One of four lovely cities on the Sea of Galilee.”
7. New archaeologic evidence is pointing to a new location for Bethsaida which places it close to the inlet of the Jordan River into the Sea of Galilee.
8. This new location of Bethsaida fits better with the biblical narrative than the traditional site.
Historical Background
1. Bethsaida was a fishing village with several hundred inhabitants during the time of Christ.
2. At least 3 of the 12 disciples were from Bethsaida.
John 1:44: Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
3. Later on, however, it appears these disciples moved to Capernaum to be closer to where Jesus lived.
Mark 1:21: And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching.
Mark 1:28: And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

3. Bethsaida was one of the 3 towns Jesus cursed because of their unbelief in Him after witnessing all His miracles (Matthew 11:21).
4. It was close by to Bethsaida where Christ fed the 5,000 ( Luke 9:12–17).
5. Not far from Bethsaida is where Jesus walked on the water and calmed the sea (Mark 6:48–51).

Location
1. The Sea of Galilee is located in the northern part of Israel, known as the Galilee region. Therefore, it’s called the Sea of Galilee.
2. It is also referred to in Scripture by other names like Ginnosar, Lake of Gennesar, Gennesaret, Sea of Chinneroth, Kinneret, and Sea of Tiberias.
3. It’s about 70 miles (115 Km.) north of Jerusalem and about 27 miles (45 Km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea.
4. It is a freshwater lake about 8 miles (13 km.) wide by about 12 miles (19 km.) long and 150 ft. (46 m.) deep.
5. It is located about 700 ft. (213 m.) below sea level.
6. It is the main freshwater source for much of Israel.
7. Because of its location, storms can arise quickly and drop down onto its surface without much warning.
8. The Sea of Galilee was located on a main crossroad of the known world during Christ ministry on earth. This international highway was called the “Via Maris” (Way of the Sea), and linked travel between the three continents of, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
9. Travelers from these 3 continents were forced to use this route as there were few other options for traveling to and from each continent. This was so because there was a desert to the east that was impassible due to lack of water, and the Mediterranean Sea was located to the west which was not a realistic option for travel as it was expensive, and ships were scarce.
10. The Via Maris passed right along the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and there are old ruins and markers showing its existence.
11. The north shore of the Sea of Galilee was even more traveled than the roads and routes leading through Jerusalem.
12. Oftentimes, we might think Christ was hiding out somewhere in a remote location. However, just the opposite was true. He chose the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (and Capernaum was located at a key place along this route) as a center stage so His message would reach as many people as possible in the world.
13. By spending most of His ministry time in the northern Galilee area, Christ’s miracles would travel by word of mouth to the ends of the earth. This laid the groundwork and sowed the seeds of the Gospel to the rest of the known world so that the evangelization work done later by the apostles would be easier and more acceptable to those who heard the message about Christ.
Historical Background
1. Abraham entered the Promised Land through the gateway of the Sea of Galilee when he first journeyed from Ur of the Chaldeans.
2. In Matthew 4 we find that Jesus established his home ministry base in the town of Capernaum, which is located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
3. At least 6 of the 12 disciples were from right around the Sea of Galilee. These were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Matthew, and Philip.
4. According to Acts 1:11, the rest of the disciples were from the Galilee area as well.

Capernaum (pronounced /kəˈpɜrniəm/ kə-PUR-nee-əm; Hebrew: כְּפַר נַחוּם‎‎, Kfar Nahum, Nahum's village) was a fishing village[1] inhabited from mid 2nd century BC to 11th century AD. It is located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Gallilee[2] and had a population of about 1,500.[3]

Recent excavations revealed that there were two synagogues in the village: the more recent was made of limestone and was built on top of the older, which was made of local black basalt. Only the foundation walls, some , and the cobblestone floor remain of the earlier structure.

A church near Capernaum is said to be the home of Saint Peter. When Jesus left Nazareth, he settled in Capernaum where he chose his first four disciples, James, John, Peter and Andrew.

The town is cited in the Gospel of Luke where it was reported to have been the home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John, as well as the tax collector Matthew. In Matthew 4:13 the town was reported to have been the home of Jesus. According to Luke 4:31-44, Jesus taught in the synagogue in Capernaum on Sabbath. Jesus then healed a man who had the spirit of an unclean devil and healed a fever in Simon Peter's mother-in-law. According to Gospel of Luke /Luke 7: 1-10, it is also the place where a Roman Centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant. A building which may have been a synagogue of that period has been found beneath the remains of a later synagogue.

Capernaum is also mentioned in the Gospel of Mark (2:1), it is the location of the famous healing of the paralytic lowered through the roof to reach Jesus.

Josephus referred to Capernaum as a fertile spring. He stayed the night there after spraining his ankle. During the first Jewish revolt of 66-70 Capernaum was spared as it was never occupied by the Romans
