Regions of the world with similar populations

Demography is the statistical study of populations, especially human beings. Demographic analysis can cover whole societies or groups defined by criteria such as education, nationality, religion, and ethnicity.

In this video we will compare cities, countries & regions of the world that have similar populations to each other.

At the time of writing this description there are 7,978,876,410 humans on Earth.

The Earth's population hit 6 billion in 1999, 7 billion in 2011 and is predicted to reach 8 billion in 2023.

Japan Outlook 2024

The Japan Society of Northern California hosted its annual Japan Outlook program that looked at the hot topics for the coming year in Japan and US-Japan relations. Many observers predicted an unprecedented year of tumult and uncertainty as 4 billion people headed to the polls in national elections, wars with global impact raged in Ukraine and Gaza, and geopolitical tensions continued to mount in the Asia Pacific region. Attendees heard how Japan was expected to navigate these challenging times in 2024!

The event featured two outstanding speakers who helped make sense of these complicated issues. Akio Fujii served as the chair of the Nikkei Editorial Board, a veteran journalist, and one of Japan’s top foreign policy experts. His previous positions included a stint as Bureau Chief in Washington, DC. Tobias Harris, a well-known expert on Japanese domestic politics and author of a critically acclaimed book on the late Prime Minister Abe, also spoke at the event.

Chicago's South Side with Geoffrey Baer

Explore Chicago's South Side neighborhoods with the people who call them home. This new WTTW documentary hosted by Geoffrey Baer traces the history and culture of neighborhoods south of I-55. From Ashburn to Auburn, Hyde Park to Hegewisch, Woodlawn to Washington Park, you'll learn about the events that shaped communities and meet the people who created the true identity of Chicago's South Side.

The story of the South Side of Chicago is a story of immigrants and of migrants, of workers and unions, of political dynasties and sports legacies, art and commerce, progress and struggle.

It is a story of Irish, German, Italian, Polish, Chinese, Lithuanian, Croatian, Slovakian, Mexican and African Americans, of blue collars and brownfields, of White Sox and Black Sox – and of one Red Bridge.

Above all, the story of Chicago’s South Side is a story of neighborhoods – a rich patchwork quilt of neighborhoods, each with its own origin story, identity, culture, and heroes. And while some South Side neighborhoods might seem defined by how much things stay the same, most demonstrate how much in Chicago continuously evolves.

Explore some of the South Side’s neighborhoods and their stories, with even more at:

The Indigenous State: Race, Politics, and Performance in Plurinational Bolivia

Book talk with Dr. Nancy Postero, Anthropology, University of California San Diego.

What happens when indigenous organizations and political parties control the state? In 2005, Bolivia elected its first indigenous president, Evo Morales. Taking power in a “democratic cultural revolution”, Morales promised to create a new form of state and a “decolonized” society privileging indigenous people. This talk, drawing from the 2017 UC Press book of the same title, examines the discourses, policies, and practices of the Morales government to see how indigenous ideas and values were taken up by the state, and what difference it has made for formerly oppressed groups.

Talk organized by Dr. Joel Correia, with support from the Center for Latin American Studies and the Anthropology Department.

Restart Michigan with Deloitte: Tax Policy Implications of a Biden Presidency

The 2020 elections delivered control of the key policy making functions to Democrats, putting President Biden and members of his party in a position to reshape the tax code.

In this session, Jon Traub, managing principal of the Tax Policy Group in Deloitte Tax LLP’s Washington National Tax Office, and Todd Baker, Deloitte’s Michigan tax leader, outline the key tax priorities of the newly elected President. The discussion will also explore some of the political considerations affecting their prospects, and examine the possible implications for businesses and individuals.

Taub and Baker will also examine the fiscal picture of the United States and how that might impact the fate of the President’s tax policy priorities.

Therme Bucharest.
