Drone Footage Of The E-Waste Mega Dump of Agbogbloshie, Accra - Ghana - Rough Edit

The horror of the Agbogbloshie Electronic Waste in Acrra seen from above!

If you're in the USA or in Europe and wondering where you're electronics are ending up after dropping them off at a green recycling center ... I have the answer for you, it's probably here at the Agbogbloshie E-Waste dump!

Are your electronics are being recycled here, yes but maybe not in the way you would expect. Your computer will get gutted, and metals are being extracted by burning them. Which makes this area of Accra, Ghana the third toxic spot in the world. And there is also no doubt that your data is extracted as well and being used, in case you haven't wiped your drives several times before recycling them.

We will be publishing another video about it soon here on our channel and write about the E-Waste Mega Dump of Agbogbloshie, Accra on our Ghana Tavel Blog:

Africa's Largest GARBAGE Dumps Controlled by GANGSTERS!

Today we are taking a look at Africa's Biggest Garbage dumps! This is a dangerous place to stay especially for the young ones. Around 1,000 homes exist at the site in shanty towns, occupied by residents who work at the dump site scavenging for scrap to sell.

Olusosun, the largest dumpsite not only in Lagos but in Africa receives about 2.1 million tonnes of waste annually comprising mostly of municipal solid waste, construction waste, and electronic waste (e-waste). The dumpsite covers an area of about 100 hectares and it is 18 meters deep.

James Town Accra GHANA In 4K

Located directly east of the Korle Lagoon, Jamestown and Usshertown are the oldest districts of Accra, Ghana and emerged as communities around the 17th century British James Fort and Dutch Ussher Fort on the Gulf of Guinea coast. These districts were developed at the end of the 19th century, and following the rapid growth of the city during the 20th century, they became areas of a dense mixture of commercial and residential use. oday, both Jamestown and Usshertown remain fishing communities inhabited primarily by the Ga. Although in a state of decay, the districts are significant in the history of Accra which replaced Cape Coast as the capital of Gold Coast (British colony) in 1876. The original lighthouse built at James Fort in 1871, was replaced in the 1930s by the current tower, which is 28 m (92 ft) tall. The lighthouse, which is 34 meters (112 ft) above sea level, has a visibility of 16 nautical miles (30 km), it overlooks the harbor, c the Bukom district and the Ussher.

Since World War II, a succession of plans to enhance the capital city have come with changes in government — some seeing improvements in Jamestown as a necessary part of the overall plan, and some treating such improvements as competing with the efforts to develop the central business district of Accra further north. Currently, plans are afoot to re-develop the districts of Jamestown and Ussher town, referred to as Ga-Mashie with the inauguration of the 2015 Old Accra Strategy. The Popular Azonto dance originated from James Town. The Local Language Ga is often spoken by the natives

Trash Dump in Ghana

This trash heap is in a village in Ghana. I have been told that occasionally it gets hauled away. Much trash not thrown here is just burned.

Agbogbloshie has become one of the world's digital dumping grounds, where the West's electronic waste, or e-waste, piles up -- hundreds of millions of tons of it each year.

“Life is really difficult; they eat here, surrounded by e-waste,” Anane tells them. “They basically are here to earn a living. But you can imagine the health implications.”

Some of the boys burn old foam on top of computers to melt away the plastic, leaving behind scraps of copper and iron they can collect to sell. The younger boys use magnets from old speakers to gather up the smaller pieces left behind at the burn site.
As part of the investigation, one of the students buys a number of hard drives to see what is on them, secretly filming the transaction to avoid the seller's suspicions.

The drives are purchased for the equivalent of US$35.

The students take the hard drives to Regent University in the Ghanaian capital and ask computer scientist Enoch Kwesi Messiah to help read what is on them.

Within minutes, he is scrolling through intimate details of people's lives, files left behind by the hard drives' original owners.

There is private financial data, too: credit card numbers, account information, records of online transactions the original owners may not have realized were even there.

“ I can get your bank numbers and I retrieve all your money from your accounts,” Messiah says. “If ever somebody gets your hard drive, he can get every information about you from the drive, no matter where it is hidden.”

That's particularly a problem in a place like Ghana, which is listed by the U.S. State Department as one of the top sources of cyber crime in the world. And it's not just individuals who are exposed. One of the drives the team has purchased contains a $22 million government contract.

It turns out the drive came from Northrop Grumman, one of America's largest military contractors. And it contains details about sensitive, multi-million dollar U.S. government contracts. They also find contracts with the defense intelligence agency, NASA, even Homeland Security.

Pollution suspected as over 500 students fall sick in E China

Media reports had said 500 students had suffered various illnesses, including cancer, since Changzhou Foreign Language School moved to new campus adjacent to a former chemical waste dump last year.

But the health department investigation found only 133 people with abnormal indicators including thyroid, lymphatic, hepatic or renal anomalies.

On Tuesday, a local health authority investigation team said checks on 597 people associated with the school had found no cases of leukemia. One case of lymphoma found occurred before the school relocated.

However, some parents claim that 493 students have suffer from dermatitis, eczema, bronchitis and reduced leucocyte counts.

Students also complain about a pungent odor on campus.

The odor was strongest between Christmas and our winter vacation.

Very pungent, just like what you could smell when nearing a chemical plant.

The campus is one street away from a plot of land that was home to three chemical plants until they were shut down in 2011.

The plot, equal in size to a dozen soccer fields, was scheduled to be rehabilitated after an appraisal in June last year, and was slated to be sold for commercial development after the soil was restored.

Head of the Changzhou environmental science institute Xu Puqing said the soil restoration should have been conducted under cover.

The soil restoration should have been done in a closed space. After the soil was dug out, the waste dumpt became a pollution source.

But the contractor, Changzhou Heimudan Construction Investment, carried out the work in the open air.

SOUNDBITE (CHINESE): LI FEI, Changzhou Heimudan Construction Investment
The soil restoration needs to be conducted in a closed way according to our initial plan. But we didn't do it. Because the contaminated soil recycling company we work with didn't have such risk requirements. They think it is ok to take the soil dug out directly.

A strong pungent odor was noticeable in the area during the process and on Dec. 25, 2015 the company stopped the operation after complaints from the public.

The plot was then reassigned for public greening and communal facilities rather than commercial use.

The government adjusted the restoration plan and, in February, an assessment panel declared the restoration complete, assessing the air quality as meeting national standards.

Parents have observed that building work on the school began in October 2013, well before any environmental appraisal was made.

The ministries of environmental protection and education have sent teams to Changzhou to assist investigations and to ensure the pubic is fully informed.

Carolina Rapezzi - Environment - 2020 Sony World Photography Awards

The Agbogbloshie scrapyard in Accra, Ghana, is one of the biggest open-air electronic waste dumps in the world. Despite the 1992 Basel Convention, designed to reduce and prevent the trade of hazardous waste from developed to less-developed countries, discarded appliances– mainly from Europe - continue to arrive under the guise of second hand goods. Mostly irreparable, these items are dismantled and burnt to extract raw and often toxic materials – like copper and aluminium – for resale. A lack of environmental control and health and safety regulations result in high levels of lead poisoning, debilitating headaches and lung diseases among workers. The health of local communities, the river and lagoon ecosystem and the food and fishing industry are all highly affected.
