10 Things NOT To Do in Macedonia
Macedonia is a wonderful country to visit with its beautiful scenery, friendly people and delicious cuisine. As with any country, there are some things that you should avoid doing while there. Here are 10 things not to do while you are in Macedonia.
1. Don't Skip Declaring Valuables
A lot of tourists don't declare all of their valuables when they are leaving the country. This can lead to huge fines and a lot of trouble. You can avoid this from happening by declaring everything that you think is valuable.
2. Don't Plan To Stay The Entire Day In Ohrid
You may think that Ohrid is filled with a lot to do. However, it's only a small part of what Macedonia has to offer. You are better off only spending a little amount of time in this area and spending the majority of your time in Bitola.
3. Don't Pass On The Rakija
This drink is similar to brandy but even more delicious. Make sure you don't pass on trying it because you think that it's just like other drinks you've had before. It's best when taken as a shot as it can be very potent.
4. Don't Order Fries
Most of the food in Macedonia is good except for the fries. They tend to be soggy and lack taste. Don't order the fries while you're here, and save those calories for something else.
5. Don't Break The Alcohol Rules
There's some interesting alcohol rules in Macedonia. During the winter months, you can't purchase it after 7 p.m. or 9 p.m. when it's summer. Make sure you keep these rules in mind so that you don't inadvertently break them.
6. Don't Pass On The Markets
The markets are absolutely incredible. You can find a lot of organic fruits and vegetables here, and the locals are very friendly. Make sure you don't leave Macedonia without visiting a market or two.
7. Don't Forget To Exchange Your Money
You will need to exchange your money as the local shops won't take your dollars. Denars will be accepted pretty much everywhere in Macedonia, and you can get them in exchange offices. If you can find an ATM, you can withdrawal denars there as well.
8. Don't Get Offended By Questions From The Locals
The locals seem to want to know everything about visitors. Don't be offended by some of the questions that they ask. They are just trying to get to know you, and nothing is really off limits to them.
9. Don't Use Your Cell Without The Proper Sim Card
Many tourists try to use their cellular phone only to find that it doesn't work. Fortunately, you can easily get a SIM card to put in your phone that will allow you to have service. All you need to do is show your passport at one of the shops that sells them in order to get one.
10. Don't Buy Bottled Water Everywhere You Go
The water is safe to drink in Macedonia and pretty tasty. Because of this, there's no need to buy bottled water whenever you're thirsty. However bottled water is always safest, whenever you're away.

We spent two days trying the most incredible food in the Balkans in Skopje, North Macedonia! We tried some of the most famous Macedonian/Balkan food from Tavce Gravce to Selsko Meso!
Macedonian cuisine was something we didn't know much about but is now one of our favourites! It is almost a representation of the Balkans itself, with an incredible mix of influence from other areas in the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire, some Slavic, Italian influence and just the amazing freshness of the ingredients straight from the fertile land. This was one of our most incredible food tours!

Lake Ohrid is just incredible! We spent two days in the town of 'Ohrid' (on the shores of the lake itself) whilst traveling south from Skopje, (North) Macedonia towards the border with Albania. To be honest we could have spent a week or more on the shores on Ohrid! Could this be Europe's most beautiful lake? ????????

Gostilnica Chardak is a very traditional restaurant on the bohemian street in Skopje. It is just a 10 minute walk from the city center square. We tried a lot of traditional Macedonian foods served in small tapas bowls called Makalo. We had Sarma, Tavce Gravce, Musaka, Polneti Piperki and Zelnik just to name a few of the dishes.

Never Expected THIS in MACEDONIA! Is Lake PRESPA better than OHRID? ????????
Our travels through Macedonia have surprised us at every turn and this day was no exception! We travelled south from Krusevo to the world famous Lake Ohrid stopping on the way at the lesser known Lake Prespa near the town of Bitola & on the border with Greece and Albania!
We didn't expect much from Prespa but what we found was unbelievable, and possibly a locals secret! If you travel to Macedonia - Lake Prespa is somewhere we highly recommend!

Three Days in North Macedonia
North Macedonia - September 2020
From Serbia, we then took a short flight on Air Serbia over to Skopje, North Macedonia. North Macedonia is a tiny mountainous country that honestly really amazed me. Being a small country there it's easy to travel. It is mountainous, so sometimes driving can be longer than expected.
Skopje itself is trying to recreate itself. For instance, the whole downtown area has undergone massive reconstruction that is not all finished. There is controversy among the locals with the architecture as it's not classic Macedonian. Skopje is small and divided by a river. On the north is the Muslim side, and on the south, the Christian. They are very different, and it's unique to cross the river and feel like a totally different experience. The bazaar on the Muslim side is particularly fun!
We also decided to explore other parts of Macedonia, including the western part. Like Mavrovo Lake and Bigorski Monastery, and the famous city of Ohrid in the south. Macedonia is gorgeous, and I highly recommend doing a tour there.
And of course, we had to do a wine tour! We took a tour with Explore Macedonia and went to four different wineries. And this experience is not like wineries in the United States. You get big pours, excellent food, and gorgeous scenery. We went to Stobi, Tikves, Sopot and Popova Kula, all excellent!
I really had a great time exploring Macedonia!

We arrived in our 8th country and were checking out Ohrid Lake, Galicica NP, in my opinion the coolest place in North Macedonia, had a CS Host in Bitola and then slowly continued #hitchhiking towards Bulgaria.
We unfortunately only spent little time in this country as we wanted to continue our journey and travel a bit faster than usual! In addition, we didn’t quite vibe with the country and we did not enjoy our time here as much as we usually do in a new country.. but that is not because of the experiences or the connections we made here but because we both felt the urge to experience something new and different. So being in the Balkans for that long just didn’t help the case. We want to leave and experience a bit of EU again! So Bulgaria here we come, a country we both haven’t been to yet so we are excited about this one!

But NMK, it was a pleasure and thank you to all the kind souls we have met during our short time here! People were so hospitable and generous and everyone wanted to help us out a lot. But it is time to leave and continue our journey to unknown grounds!
