With the introduction of modern forms of entertainment such as the Internet, television and radio, traditional performances have taken a backseat in today's modern lifestyle. Although less common these days, traditional shows are still nevertheless strong expression of a particular culture. Some have withstood the test of time and are still going strong today.
Wayang Kulit is one such activity which holds great prominence in many South East Asian cultures (including Malaysia), having entertained a great number of people since its introduction to the region around two thousand years ago. It is currently still practiced in Malaysia, particularly in the states of Kelantan, Kedah, Perlis and Terengganu. Wayang Kulit usually becomes one of the cultural highlight when travelling to Kelantan, Malaysia.

Wayang is an Indonesian and Malay word for theatre. When the term is used to refer to kinds of puppet theater, sometimes the puppet itself is referred to as wayang. Bayang, the Javanese word for shadow or imagination, also connotes spirit. Performances of shadow puppet theater are accompanied by gamelan in Java, and by gender wayang in Bali.
UNESCO designated Wayang Kulit, a shadow puppet theater and the best known of the Indonesian wayang, as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on 7 November 2003 (

Wayang Kulit, Shadow puppet play in Malaysia
One night in Penang, we walked around the streets of Georgetown and stumbled into a shadow puppet play. It's called wayang sulit in Malaysia. Wayang means shadow or imagination, while Kulit means skin and refers to the leather that puppets are made from. We noticed a lot of photographers walk through a narrow alley so we followed them, armed with our Nokia Lumia 900 and Nokia Lumia 800.
The show was part of Georgetown Festival. It's a month-long celebration of art, music, theatre, dance opera and film to celebrate Georgetown's inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage listing on 7 July, 2008.
Shadows were projected onto a white cotton cloth background by a man holding the puppets behind the screen. He was surrounded by other people with flutes, drums, and gongs who played at certain times during the play.
We've never seen anything like it before and it was also interesting to watch from behind the scenes.

Bali Shadow Puppet Show
We took a very long night time ride to a small rural village for this must see shadow puppet show (Wayang). 20 years later, Trip Advisor still has the Oka Kartini Shadow Puppet Performance in Ubud on their list. The staff at the Sheraton Nusa Indah Resort highly recommended this particular show. The music is traditionally LOUD, almost painful. We've left it exactly as recorded...
Loni and I were fortunate to be able to travel the world with our growing family from the late 80's through the early 2000's We're uploading and editing these videos so they are available to our grown children and extended family and friends.

It's not vlogging... yet-
Back in the day, turning the camera around and talking into it (vlogging) would have been pretentious. We may come back and do voice overlays on some of these and perhaps video overlays, till then these are fluid videos of the moment with titles added and sometimes music tracks.
All our travel was without the internet (no browsers before 1995, much less websites & email). I smile when today's vloggers are pained by poor internet connections. Ever use fax and phone cards ?? Could it be time for us to try a redo with current technology?...
Equipment-
Our Camera was a Sony TRV520 Digital 8 tape based movie camera. One level down from HD (remember digital cable?) We used this camera from 1999 till 2007 during our travels. Prior to that we recorded in Hi8 and standard 8. Some of the older tapes reflect this lack of clarity / resolution but of course, being family memories, we don't mind.
