The Golden Bell - City of David
We are excited to share with you two truly incredible finds that were discovered in the City of David's Herodian Road Aqueduct Excavation in recent days. The first is rare etching of a menorah on stone, assumed to be the Temple Menorah.
According to the Israel Antiquities Authority, the fact that the stone object was found at the closest proximity to the Temple Mount indicates that likely a passerby who saw the menorah with his own eyes and was amazed by its beauty incised his impressions on a stone and afterwards tossed his scrawling to the side of the road. He could scarcely have imagined that his creation would be found 2,000 years later on a slab of stone.
The second discovery is that of a Roman sword dated to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, and found within the tunnel used by the last remaining Jews in Jerusalem to hide from the Roman troops during the destruction of the Second Temple.
This Roman sword very possibly belonged to one of the foot soldiers of the Roman Legion in the last battle between the Romans and Jews over Jerusalem. The sword, considered very rare because of its incredible preservation, was found with its leather sheath partially intact.

בימים ההם בזמן הזה לא התרחש נס ליהודי ירושלים. מורעבים מהמצור הרומאי, הסתתרו ברי המזל שמצאו מעט מזון במחילות, כדי שהאוכל לא יישדד מהם. אלפיים שנה אחרי חושף אלי שוקרון כלים שהשתמרו בשלמותם במעבה האדמה - עדות אילמת לזוועה.
רשות העתיקות חושפת היום (ה') ממצאים מרתקים ששופכים אור על חייהם של היהודים שהסתתרו במחילות שמתחת לרחובות ירושלים בימים אלה ממש, לפני כאלפיים שנה, בימים שלפני חורבן הבית השני.
המצור הרומאי הממושך הביא לרעב חמור, שגרם לשוד ורצח של מי שהיה ברשותו פירורי מזון מעטים. ברי המזל הסתתרו במחילות כדי שיוכלו לאכול בהיחבא. בתוך אחת המחילות, בבור מים ששימש למסתור במעמקי האדמה - חשף הארכיאולוג אלי שוקרון ממצאים שהשתמרו בשלמותם במשך אלפי שנים במעמקי המנהרות, ומספקים הצצה נדירה למצבם הקשה של יהודי ירושלים בזמן המצור הרומאי, ימים ספורים לפני החורבן.
במערות שבעיר דוד, כאן במקום הזה, הסתתרו אנשים מפני אחריהם המורדים כדי לאכול. כדי שהם לא יקחו להם את האוכל, מספר שוקרון. שלושה סירי חרס שלמים ומנורת שמן קטנה, הם עדות אילמת למה שחוו תושבי ירושלים המורעבים בתקופת המרד הגדול שקדם לחורבן. את המנורה מיעטו היהודים להדליק, כדי שהאור לא ימשוך אליהם את המורדים.
בור המים הקטן נחשף בחפירה ארכיאולוגית שמנהלת רשות העתיקות ליד הכותל המערבי, באזור קשת רובינסון שבגן הארכיאולוגי, והוא מסתעף מתעלת ניקוז שנחשפה בשלמותה. שוקרון, מנהל החפירה מטעם רשות העתיקות, מגדיר את הממצא דרמטי להבנת מה שקרה כאן, במקום הזה, בין יז בתמוז לתשעה באב לפני אלפיים שנה. להבין את המצור, הרעב ומלחמת האחים.

King David’s Tomb Mark is a large stone cenotaph (burial mark) inside a Romanesque-style building on Mount Zion.
Since the Middle Ages the site is venerated as the Tomb of King David, although the Bible states that he was buried elsewhere: “Then David slept with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David.” (I Kings 2:10).
History of the Tomb of King David
התנך records the crowning of David and his establishment of a new Capital. Although the new capital is more known by the name Jerusalem, when it is founded, the city is titled “The City of David” (II Samuel 5:6-10). Later the Bible records David’s burial in the city and many of his successors. The location of the royal tomb of Biblical Jerusalem is still uncertain, although some claim its remains lie in the southern slopes of the City of David.
Perhaps the lack of clear evidence for the tombs of the Davidic royal dynasty led to a medieval assumption that they are really on the Southern-Western hill of Jerusalem, known today as Mount Zion. The earliest record for this tradition is from a Muslim source from the 10th century. The current tomb mark of King David on Mount Zion is within a building whose Romanesque style dates it to the time of the Crusaders. Furthermore, the large burial mark (cenotaph) with its big flower decoration is also common to the Crusaders.
Being a holy site, the tomb mark was never excavated, although a ground-penetrating radar survey indicated a big cavity beneath it.
Visiting King David’s Tomb Mark on Mount Zion
Since 1948 the tomb mark is under Israeli control. The tomb mark became a very popular Jewish pilgrimage destination, and to this day a synagogue operates in its building. Visitors to the tomb are requested to be dressed modestly and men are expected to cover their heads.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water, and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many-faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be implanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

בלב אתר עיר דוד ממוקם- מעיין הגיחון, מעיין קרסטי הנובע בתוך המערה התת קרקעית שבמורד המדרגות. בעבר התגברה ונחלשה זרימת מימיו לסירוגין (מכאן הכינוי מעיין פועם) ייתכן כי שמו- גיחון- רומז על כך. המעיין איננו פועם מזה עשרות שנים בעקבות שינויים שהתרחשו במבנה החללים התת קרקעיים הקשורים אליו. מי המעיין שימשו את תושבי העיר לשתייה וכן הובלו דרומה בתעלה הכנענית (המכונה תעלה 2) על מנת להשקות את השדות החקלאיים שבנחל קדרון. ליד מעיין זה הומלך שלמה, בנו של דוד למלך ישראל: ... וירכִבו את-שלמה-על פרדת המלך דוד ויליכו אתו על-גיחון. ויקח צדוק הכהן את-קרן השמן מן-האהל וימשח את-שלמה ויתקעו בשופר ויאמרו כל-העם יחי המלך שלמה (מלכים א, א לח-לט). מי המעיין שימשו גם לעבודת הקודש בבית המקדש, לניסוך המים, לטהרה ולמי חטאת.

The City of David and more...Warren's Shaft, Hezekiah's and the Canaanite Tunnels
Join our tour of the City of David on a Sunday. During the first part of the video you can hear the exuberance of young children at the site. The City of David is the birthplace of Jerusalem and is the Jerusalem of ancient times. It remains one of the most studied parts of Jerusalem. Here you can see ruins of an ancient Jebusite city walls, Hezekiah’s tunnel (which acted as a water supply system), and the tombs where kings and officials of Judah were buried. Part of the water system that David used to capture the city, Warren’s Shaft, is described in the Bible (2 Samuel 5:6-10). We see Hezekiah’s Tunnel and we walk through the narrow Canaanite Tunnel. Our guide points out the walls of the city that Nehemiah caused to be rebuilt (Book of Nehemiah: Nehemiah permitted to go to Jerusalem; he inspects the walls and rebuilding begins in Nehemiah 3). Our guide also shows us the mark for David and describes David's Shield (the Star of David).

The City of David (Hebrew: עיר דוד, Ir David; Arabic: مدينة داوود) is the Israeli name for an
ancient core of settlement in Jerusalem dating back to the Bronze Age and which is
now a major archaeological site. It is on a narrow ridge running south from the Temple
Mount in East Jerusalem.
Hezekiah's Tunnel, or the Siloam Tunnel (Hebrew: נִקְבַּת השילוח, Nikbat
HaShiloah) is a tunnel that was dug underneath the City of David in
Jerusalem in ancient times. Its popular name is due to the most common
hypothesis of its origin, namely that it dates from the reign of Hezekiah of
Judah (late 8th and early 7th century BCE) and corresponds to the
waterworks mentioned in 2 Kings 20:20 in the Bible.[1] According to the
Bible, King Hezekiah prepared Jerusalem for an impending siege by the
Assyrians, by blocking the source of the waters of the upper Gihon, and
leading them straight down on the west to the City of David (2 Chronicles
32). Support for the Hezekial dating is attributed both to the written
inscription found on its wall (Siloam Inscription), and to radiocarbon dates of
organic matter contained in the original plastering.[2] However, the dates
were challenged in 2011 by new excavations that suggested an origin in the
late 9th or early 8th century BCE.[3][4]
