MBS and the Saudi crisis of legitimacy
The latest arrests within the Saudi royal family show the young crown prince still feels insecure about his position.
Last week, three senior Saudi royals were arrested amid rumours of an alleged coup plot in Riyadh. Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, brother of King Salman, former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef (who had been under house arrest since 2017), and his younger brother, Prince Nawaf bin Nayef were detained along with a number of high-ranking officials, as security in the capital was increased.

Many have seen the sweep-up operation as yet another attempt by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) to consolidate power. Speculation about the health of King Salman was quickly countered with footage on state television of him attending a meeting with officials.

Whether there was indeed a coup plot or MBS was merely preparing the ground for a smooth transition of power in case the king's already frail health failed, these developments show that the young royal still does not feel fully secure in his position.

The reason for this may be that, just like other Saudi royals who have vied for power, he has been unable to tackle the most pressing issue of the House of Saud - legitimacy.

Consolidating power
Since King Salman came to power in January 2015, MBS has worked hard to consolidate his position within the House of Saud, the country and the region.

When his father took the throne, he was immediately appointed defence minister. Two months later, he launched a war in neighbouring Yemen without consulting senior royals.

The same year, he managed to arrange the removal of former Saudi intelligence head, Muqrin bin Abdulaziz, from the position of crown prince. Two years after that, he did the same with the king's nephew and former interior minister, Mohammed bin Nayef, and was appointed the direct successor of his father.

In parallel, MBS has also promoted people close to him to important posts within the government to consolidate his power. His half-brother, Abdulaziz bin Salman, was appointed minister of state for energy affairs, while his younger brother, Khalid bin Salman, was sent to Washington, DC as Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States and later made the deputy minister of defence.

Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan Al Saud, who has helped MBS acquire expensive art, was appointed minister of culture in 2018 when he was 32. Another youthful Saudi prince, Abdullah bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, was given the position of minister of National Guard.

MBS also promoted non-royals to positions that would traditionally be given to members of the royal family. His close confidant, Major General Ahmed Asiri, took the position of deputy head of the General Intelligence, but was later sacked over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Another confidant, Ahmad al-Khatib, was appointed minister of tourism. Turki al-Sheikh, who is also one of the crown prince's aides, was promoted to royal adviser with the rank of minister and headed first the sport authority of the kingdom and then the newly created entertainment authority.

Meanwhile, MBS himself has retained a long list of official positions. Apart from the crown prince, he is also defence minister, first deputy of the council of ministers, chairman of the Board for the Military Industries Corporation, chairman of the Board for the Public Investment Fund, and chairman of the Higher Council for Saudi Aramco, among other posts.

In other words, he holds personal control over the military and financial arms, including Saudi energy giant Aramco, of the Saudi state, the two most important and lucrative state portfolios. Since King Salman's ascension to the throne, Tharawat Holding, which is associated with MBS and run by his brother, Turki bin Salman, has grown exponentially by concluding major deals with state companies and institutions.

At the same time, the crown prince has led a so-called anti-corruption campaign which has cracked down on powerful and wealthy individuals within the Saudi business establishment and even members of the royal family. Among its victims were media magnate Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, National Guard Minister Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, former Economy and Planning Minister Adel Fakeih, former Royal Court chief Khalid al-Tuwaijri, and prominent Saudi businessmen Waleed al-Ibrahim, Saleh Kamel and Bakr bin Laden.

MBS has also sought to present himself as a reformer. He has tried to ingratiate himself with Saudi youth and Western countries by curbing the power of the conservative religious establishment and pushing through some social reforms, such as lifting the ban on women driving and allowing cinemas and musical concert halls to reopen in the kingdom. He has also launched the ambitious Vision 2030, seeking to reform the Saudi economy and set up the IPO of Aramco.

What do you know about the story of the Saudi prince who has been sleeping for 17 years? 2022

Learn about the story of the Saudi prince who has been sleeping for 17 years.. This is what happened to him and put him in a coma. Will he wake up soon?

Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal was exposed to an unfortunate traffic accident in 2005 while studying in London at the Military College. . His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, and his family did not lose hope of his return to life again

Prince Al-Alam” is the son of Prince Khaled bin Talal, the third son of Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and his uncle is the famous businessman and millionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Circumstances of the accident
Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid was involved in a car accident in 2005, when he was 18 years old, where he was driving with two friends at high speed and the tragic accident caused Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid to enter in complete defect, where doctors confirmed brain death.
Prince's State of Health
Since the incident of Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid, the medical diagnoses of his condition have varied, as a medical team of three American doctors and a Spanish doctor have been invited to try to stop the innocent from his head, but he has remained in a coma since that painful incident. Although doctors expected the clinical death to be between two and 72 hours after the incident, Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid is still alive, lying in a deep coma at the specialized hospital in Riyadh.
Nickname Sleeping Prince
Since he was in a coma, Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid has been known as the Sleeping Prince, which many sympathizers have called his health.
Why not remove devices
Although Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid's coma continues, medical devices have not yet been removed from him more than 17 years after the accident.
His father, Prince Khalid bin Talal, spoke about why the prince had not yet been removed from medical devices, saying that his full belief that God almighty had written a new life for his son after the incident. Someone asked me why don't you pull the devices off your son? I replied: If God's will was to die in the incident, my son would have been in his grave, he does not need my help now with his apartment or by staying alone or by his death, and I am patient, satisfied and reassured by what God has destined and entrusted to him.
Sympathy for the Prince
The Sleeping Prince is deeply sympathetic by a large few Saudi people who are keen to follow the latest developments in his health, and share the pictures and videos that are published about him from time to time, where their calls for him to heal since the painful accident, and since entering Abyaya, many princes and princesses of Saudi Arabia are keen to visit the sleeping prince in the hospital, in order to check on his health and check on his father Prince Khalid bin Talal, who appeared in more from a picture and video of him kissing his son's head or holding his hand.
Interacting with your father
Prince Khalid bin Talal is keen to reach out to people interested in following the sleeping prince's state of health, posting photos or videos on social media and saying that although his son has entered a deep abysm. However, he is able to hear him and respond strongly to him, and this has been shown in a number of videos posted on social media, where the second prince responded to the words of his father or the people around him, and moved his fingers or feet.
Sudden deterioration
In 2007, the prince suffered a severe deterioration in his health following a lung injury, but doctors succeeded in controlling the sheriff, and his condition returned to stability.
Sleeping Prince moves his head.
In mid-2019, Princess Rima bint Talal, sister of Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, posted a video showing Alwaleed bin Khalid moving his head from right to left. Commenting on the video she posted on her social media account, Princess Rima bint Talal wrote: Hafiz al-Qadir Al-Rahman al-Rahim... Alwaleed bin Khalid moves his head from both sides, Lord, thank you.
Moving his hands.
Fifteen years after he entered a deep coma, the sleeping prince appeared in a video where he interacted with a woman who greeted him and moved his fingers, to ask him to raise his hand up, and he responded to her request, and the video met wide interaction on social media and calls for recovery, especially as it is a positive sign indicating a significant improvement in the health of Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid.
