THE SUBWAY HIKE | Zion National Park | Bottom-Up Route

This place is magical! But, the hike is not easy. We applied and received a permit a couple of months prior to this, and we were excited to knock this off the bucket list! The hike took us 9 hours, but a little less than 8 hours hiking. We spent 1 1/4 hours at the Subway. This was filmed in late April 2022.

How to Hike the Subway in Zion, Top-Down (Canyoneering Route)

The Subway, also known as the Left Fork of North Creek is one of Zion National Park’s most popular and iconic hikes, and for good reason. It is one of the most beautiful and diverse slot canyons in Utah. The permit for the Subway in Zion is very hard to get. So when we got invited by Anh, we immediately jumped at the chance. If you can't get the permit for this, check out Water Canyon. It is a beautiful beginner canyon with a lot to offer.

There are two ways to get to the Subway in Zion, the bottom-up or the top-down. The bottom-up is a NON-TECHNICAL, strenuous hike with tons of creek crossings, route finding, and scrambling over boulders. The top-down is a TECHNICAL ROUTE that requires rappelling skills, extensive route-finding experience, down-climbing skills, and swimming through multiple deep pools of very cold water. Even though it is more strenuous, the top-down route is also our favorite because you get to experience so much more of the canyon that you won’t be able to see with the bottom-up route. These are the directions for the top-down route.

WATCH THIS before you visit the Zion Subway

WATCH THIS before you visit the Zion Subway

I recently released a video where my wife, some friends and I visited the Zion Subway. As part of this trip, I wanted to put together a follow up video that would give tips and advice for people if they wanted to visit the Zion Subway themselves. And there's a reason for this;

I have read many reports of people who have gotten in trouble in the Subway. The degree of trouble varies from minor to severe. In fact, Tina and I came across a group in distress on our first trip through.

I can see why. People see the beautiful pictures and want to go. They think of Zion National Park in the frame of many national parks, with clearly marked and maintained trails. They see that it's an 8~9 mile hike and think 'that won't be too bad.'

Those expectations will get you into trouble in the Zion Subway. This is a back country route, not a maintained trail like the Riverside Walk or Canyon Overlook. It starts with a vague trail at the parking lot and quickly comes to a steep drop into the canyon. The hike down is steep, covered in loose rocks and sometimes confusing. When you get to the bottom, you are greeted by the last sign that you will see on your way in. It's a tiny sign, and many groups have walked right past it, missing their exit and making their trip miserable.

Then it's the creek walking. Boulders, roots, disappearing social trails and water. Lots of water. The going is slow.

Oh, and the water is undrinkable. I actually had a Zion Subway tips video, but since then Zion National Park has had issues with toxic algea blooms in the creeks and streams, making the water unsafe for consumption.

So....yeah. It's not as easy and straightforward as you might think. That's not to say it's impossible. It's not. It's not really that hard even, in the grand scheme of hikes. But you need to know what to expect so you can be prepared and safe. I hope this video helps.

If you click on the links below - and especially if you buy from these links - I'll get compensation. So that would be cool. No, I'm not sponsored by them, but I love the products.

Zion Adventures: The Subway - Bottom up route

Hiking the subway from the bottom up is a great way to see beautiful cascades and waterfalls as well as the lower subway’s unique rock formations. The hike is non-technical, but you will get wet. In winter months cold water protection such as a dry suit is necessary.

The Best of Zion - Angels Landing, Subway, Narrows (GoPro)

We spent three days at Zion National Park and hiked the best of it!

Angel's Landing - one of the most exciting hikes at Zion. With steep drop-offs on both sides, it's an exhilarating hike - especially at the top!

The Narrows is the most popular hike at Zion. We hiked through knee-high to waist high waters up and down the Narrows.

The Subway hike is Zion's self-proclaimed best hike at the national park and a place you'll have to see in person.

Thanks for watching. Turn the volume up and enjoy!

The Subway At Zion | Zion National Park | Utah | 4K | GoPro HERO 7 Black

I did a 'Bottoms Up' hike to 'The Subway' in Zion National Park on March 24, 2019. I started my hike around 7.15 AM and arrived at 'The Subway' around 10.00 AM. There was no snow or ice along the route and the water levels were high. It was nice to see Archangel Falls so full. Anyone planning to go on this hike should definitely carry plenty of water and adequate food. The hike is strenuous, but the destination made it all worthwhile I should note that the first 3 miles involve crossing the creek multiple times and negotiating boulders - the scenery is average. The last 1 mile is just spectacular. I highly recommend going in the spring, as the waterfalls are running full.

Here are some vignettes from my hike to 'The Subway. I shot this footage with a GoPro Hero 7 Black. Photos displayed at the end of the video were shot with the Nikon D850 and the Nikon 24-70 G lens.

Zion National Park Subway Hike (Bottom Up)

Subway hike bottom up in Zion National Park, from the Left Fork Trailhead to the Subway. This hike is around 9 miles round trip with 1300 feet of gain and loss, and is considered strenuous for scrambling over and around rocks, walking through the river, and navigational skills. We got a permit beforehand from the Zion Backcountry office of the National Park Service ( for more information). This was in summer 2021 and it had recently rained, so the water was a bit murky, but the hike was still amazing! Thank you for watching!

The first time I did this hike was in summer 2017 - here is the video for that experience!

Zion - Top Down Subway Hike

One of my favorite activities in Zion National Park is a top-down hike of the Subway.

The Subway is a classic Zion slot canyon, and is the most popular such feature in the park, behind the Zion Narrows. The route can be hiked from the bottom up, which is easier, but severely limits your access to some of the most stellar scenery in the park. A top-down hike will provide a full day adventure & will take you into the heart of Zion, on an epic journey that you will never forget.

Both top-down and bottom-up hikes of the Subway require a permit, which is issued by the National Park Service backcountry desk at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center in Springdale, Utah.

You'll probably want at least a lightweight wetsuit for this one, and knowledge of rappel techniques as areas of the canyon require swimming through ice-cold water as well as rappels on vertical canyon walls.

Enjoy Zion, we'll see ya on down the trail...

Angel's Landing - Scariest Hike in America? Steep Drop off - Zion National Park, Utah

One of the Scariest and Spectacular hikes in North America. Here's a look at how Angels landing looks like with steep drop offs of 1,000 feet on both sides. Video shows me going up and down Angels Landing. It's one of the most popular hiking trails in Zion National Park, Utah. It's also listed as one of the top 10 hikes in North America.

Definitely make this one of the hikes on your bucket list.

The Subway Zion National Park Left Fork Trail bottom up- 2 Utah Hikers -Photography and Hiking

For a couple of hikers in their mid 50's, this hike I would rate as strenuous! The trail fades in and out in the Wilderness of Zion National Park. You have to make your way over rock falls, boulders, trees and water. We wore layers because it's November and just our hiking shoes with neoprene socks. If you plan on taking pictures, this hike could take you up to 10 hours. It is 9 miles round trip over rough terrain. There is a 400 foot decent at the beginning and the end (ascending) that has loose rock and is very steep. The whole hike is an adventure which we thoroughly enjoyed and now have the sore muscles to prove our hard work! Follow the stream up canyon and pay attention to landmarks so you don't miss the way out. Photography-
