The Love Story of the Taj Mahal

One of the things we knew we HAD to do was visit the Taj Mahal with our kids. When we added India to our family RTW itinerary, a stop at the iconic building was mandatory.

The Taj Mahal is a monument to a love story. The mausoleum was built by the Maharaja (the king) for his wife, the queen. The queen's remains reside in the centre of the large dome, with the Maharaja himself resting slightly off to the side.

Our visit started before dawn. We skipped the line and were able to watch as the sun rose over the amazingly white Taj Mahal. The building is made of brilliant white marble and is inlaid with Arabic script in black.

Converted to today's dollars, the complex cost $800,000,000 to build! Now that's love.

Check out the next video from our family gap year. We get coloured during Holi Fest in Mathura.

Why is Taj Mahal so beautiful? #shorts

Usually dislike symmetry because it takes over a design but The Taj Mahal is the perfect example of beautiful symmetry and also beautiful materials . This is the marble they used which is slighting translucent and kind of glows, is one of the most beautiful materials I’ve ever seen. Also the story behind the building is also beautiful. Shah Jahan’s wife died while giving birth to their child.. his love, heartbreak and grief was the inspiration behind the architecture in memory for his wife .

Mughal Empire - For Kids

Shah Jahan was the fifth ruler of the Mughal dynasty. His reign is often regarded as the Golden Age of the Mughal empire because of the grand monuments that were built during his rule.

Taj Mahal, located in Agra, was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Taj Mahal is made of white marble. The walls of the monument are decorated with an inlay of precious and semi-precious stones. It is constructed on a raised square platform and has four tall minarets.

The graves of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal are in the lower tomb chamber of the main monument.

Taj Mahal is considered as one of the greatest monuments built during the Mughal period.

The Red Fort Complex was built as the palace inside the fortified city of Shahjahanabad—the new capital of Emperor Shah Jahan. The Red Fort is named for its massive walls made of red sandstone. Some important structures which are a part of this complex are Delhi Gate, Lahori Gate, Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, and Moti Masjid.

Do you know about any interesting features of these two monuments?

The Real Reason The Taj Mahal Was Built | History of Architecture

The Real Reason The Taj Mahal Was Built | History of Architecture

The Taj Mahal is an enormous mausoleum complex commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his beloved wife. Constructed over a 20-year period on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, India, the famed complex is one of the most outstanding examples of Mughal architecture, which combined Indian, Persian and Islamic influences. At its center is the Taj Mahal itself, built of shimmering white marble that seems to change color depending on the daylight. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, it remains one of the world’s most celebrated structures and a stunning symbol of India’s rich history.

Shah Jahan
Shah Jahan was a member of the Mughal dynasty that ruled most of northern India from the early 16th to the mid 18th-century. After the death of his father, King Jahangir, in 1627, Shah Jahan emerged the victor of a bitter power struggle with his brothers, and crowned himself emperor at Agra in 1628.

At his side was Arjumand Banu Begum, better known as Mumtaz Mahal (“Chosen One of the Palace”), whom he married in 1612 and cherished as the favorite of his three queens.

In 1631, Mumtaz Mahal died after giving birth to the couple’s 14th child. The grieving Shah Jahan, known for commissioning a number of impressive structures throughout his reign, ordered the building of a magnificent mausoleum across the Yamuna River from his own royal palace at Agra.

Construction began around 1632 and would continue for the next two decades. The chief architect was probably Ustad Ahmad Lahouri, an Indian of Persian descent who would later be credited with designing the Red Fort at Delhi.

In all, more than 20,000 workers from India, Persia, Europe and the Ottoman Empire, along with some 1,000 elephants, were brought in to build the mausoleum complex.

Design and Construction of the Taj Mahal
Named the Taj Mahal in honor of Mumtaz Mahal, the mausoleum was constructed of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones (including jade, crystal, lapis lazuli, amethyst and turquoise) forming intricate designs in a technique known as pietra dura

Taj Mahal - India

In 1631, Shah Jahan, emperor during the Mughal empire's period of greatest prosperity, was grief-stricken when his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632. The court chronicles of Shah Jahan's grief illustrate the love story traditionally held as an inspiration for Taj Mahal. The principal mausoleum was completed in 1648 and the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later.
