The Story of Post-Colonial Africa: Kwame Nkrumah

Ghana - A Black History Lesson For You and Me - Kwame Nkrumah

As I post these pictures of the Ghanaian sites that we have visited, I want to make it clear that the history of the African or African American is not about shaming others regarding the acts of their forefathers! This is about telling the stories that have been suppressed and untold for fear of retaliation by a new generation! It's about the history of the African and understanding our ancestry and where we have evolved from. It's about fostering conversations and change for those of African decent and those of non-African decent.

There are many cultures, creeds and races that grow up being told of their history and many that live their history but the African has been in many ways denied their true history to even include their true family name.

I find nothing wrong in being proud of your culture and creed and understanding your history because you need to know where you have come from to have clear sight into where you are going and/or achieve to go.

Take these postings regarding the 2BusyNot2Travel journey in Ghana as education and catalyst for change and conversation. I can tell you first hand that this journey is one of great fulfillment, if you are open to it, no matter your culture, creed or race.

A History of Pan-African Revolt: Introduction.

Originally published in England in 1938 and expanded in 1969, this work remains the classic account of global Black resistance. This concise, accessible history of revolts by African peoples worldwide explores the wide range of methods used by Africans to resist oppression and the negative effects of imperialism and colonization as viewed in the 20th century. Written from a radical perspective with a substantial new introduction that contextualizes the work in the ferment of the times, A History of Pan-African Revolt is essential to understanding liberation movements in Africa and the diaspora and continues to reveal new insights, lessons, and visions to successive generations.

WEBSITE:
Jerry Johnson is from California. He lives in Ghana. He works in New Ningo. He founded the Ancestral Wall.

It is magnificent. There are 90 portraits of 90 heroes and sheroes and icons. Several artists used their skills to paint an outside gallery for students, visitors, and locals alike. From Mariam Makeba to Steve Biko. From Na Gbewa to Imhotep.

“We are recognizing those who recognized us,” teacher and cultural entrepreneur Johnson told this reporter while walking through the altogether serene and informative grounds.

The pretty garden encompasses impressive portraits and a really great restaurant, and terrific guest houses.

Fifteen years ago, this realized dream started as a desire to “begin teaching the local youngsters African history. But there are so many villages, so many schools I couldn’t do it logistically, so I got the idea that if I put 90 characters up on the wall, then I could bring the schools for field trips.”

Word-of-mouth spread, and now, worldwide, “It has become something of an attraction. I go from 200,000 years ago with Eve.”

There she is short-Afro’d and all. So many others too: from Eve to Francis Cress-Welsing. From King Tackie Tawiah I to Thomas Sankara. From Shaka Zulu to Dr. Yosef Ben-Jochannan.

“I picked them on themes that I wanted to teach the children, so you will see people who aren’t very famous at all, but there is a lesson or something they stood for that I wanted the children to hear in terms of our history, our ancestry, and the foundation of our African being.”

The Story of Dr. Livingstone

On the last day of our Africa trip we hear the story of Dr. Livingstone who was truly a very remarkable man. It's amazing how much differenceone person can make! He's most famous for having discovered Victoria Falls, but his real achievement was that, as our presenter Chris said, he single-handedly ended the Arab-Swahili slave trade! Like everyone, I knew about Dr. Livingstone, especially the famous line Dr. Livingstone, I presume, but I was flabbergasted at his perseverance to overcome so many obstacles and defeats! Unfortunately, the audio is pretty bad, as there were helicopters touring Victoria Falls, but Chris is both knowledgeable and engaging in telling us this inspirational story.

Conversations | Artist-Led Spaces: Learning from the African Continent

Conversations | Artist-Led Spaces: Learning from the African Continent
Art Basel in Basel 2023, June 15

Artist-led spaces on the African continent are not a new phenomenon, but it’s a growing one. Artists are paving the way for future generations by setting up initiatives to support both their own practice and that of their peers. This conversation brings together representatives of four different projects on the African continent – located in Kumasi, Lagos, Nairobi, and Harare – to discuss their dreams, challenges, politics, and the impact they hope to have on their community and beyond. What can we learn from these new organizational models and networks?

‣ Yinka Shonibare, artist and Founder, Guest Artists Space Foundation, Lagos and Ijebu; Guest Projects, London
‣ Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh, curator and critic, blaxTARLINES, Kumasi
‣ Dana Whabira, Artistic Director, Njelele Art Station, Harare
‣ Kaloki Nyamai, artist, founder and director, Kamene Art Residency, Nairobi
‣ Moderator: Kadiatou Diallo, curator, facilitator and cultural practitioner, Basel

‣ Artist Yinka Shonibare CBE was born in London, UK and moved to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of three. He lives and works in London. His interdisciplinary practice explores cultural identity and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalisation. In 2021, Shonibare launched Guest Artists Space Foundation, a non-profit founded and developed by the artist. The Foundation is dedicated to facilitating cultural exchange through residencies, public programmes and exhibition opportunities for practitioners from around the world. Shonibare is represented by Stephen Friedman Gallery, London and Goodman Gallery.

‣ Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh is a curator and critic based in Kumasi, Ghana. He is a key member of the blaxTARLINES coalition and Exit Frame Collective— who has been running the annual peer-led, schizo-pedagogical and inoperative art school project called CritLab since 2020 in Ghana. Ohene-Ayeh co-organises Kelas Bareng — an experimental educational project managed between Gudskul, blaxTARLINES, Städelschule, and Nordland Kunst og filmhøgskole which featured in documenta fifteen (2022). He is presently a teacher at KNUST in Kumasi.

‣ Dana Whabira is an artist who lives and works in Harare where she founded Njelele art station. The station’s focus is the generation of projects through research, experimentation and exchange. Njelele is there to generate a critical gaze on society and history and interested in notions of interconnection, community and conviviality. In the past, programmes have encompassed residency, exhibition, talks, including a collaboration with the National Gallery, and now radio. It currently broadcasts from Zimbabwe on njelele.art/radio.

‣ Kaloki Nyamai creates intricate compositions on canvas. His works have shown internationally at the Stellenbosch Triennale (2020), Dakar Biennale, and Venice Biennale (2022). Recent solo shows include ‘Moments That I Miss’ (2022) and ‘Dining in Chaos’ (2023) at Galerie Barbara Thumm. Nyamai lives and works in Nairobi, where he is the founder and director of Kamene Art Residency. Kaloki Nyamai is represented by Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin.

‣ Kadiatou Diallo is an independent curator, facilitator and cultural practitioner based in Basel. She currently works as research associate at the Centre for African Studies at the University of Basel and as lecturer for the Master of Arts in Public Spheres (MAPS) at the édhéa (école de design et haute école d'art) in Sierre.

The Art Basel 2023 Conversations program is curated by Emily Butler. Coordination and support: Arianna Guidi.

Ghana: The Beacon of West Africa #ghana #Africa #westafrica

Our journey starts thousands of years ago, where the area now known as Ghana was inhabited by a variety of different ethnic groups. These early societies laid the foundation for the complex tapestry of cultures that make up modern-day Ghana.
Fast forward to the sixteenth century, when the Portuguese arrived on the Gold Coast, as it was then known. This marked the beginning of a tumultuous period of colonial rule that would last for more than four hundred years. Over the centuries, the Dutch, the Danes, and the British would all stake their claim on this resource-rich land. However, Ghana's story is not just one of subjugation. Throughout this period, powerful kingdoms such as Dagbon and the Ashanti Empire rose and fell, each leaving its unique imprint on the nation's cultural landscape.
The twentieth century brought with it winds of change. The year nineteen fifty-seven marked a turning point in Ghana's history. Under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana declared its independence from British colonial rule, becoming a beacon of hope for countries across the continent. Since then, Ghana has continued to make strides on the international stage, known for its political stability, healthcare, economic growth, and human development.

3. **Colonial Period:**
- The Scramble for Africa in the late 19th century saw European powers colonizing much of the continent. This period had profound and lasting effects on African societies and economies.

4. **Independence Movements:**
- In the mid-20th century, many African nations gained independence from colonial rule. Leaders like Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana), Nelson Mandela (South Africa), and Jomo Kenyatta (Kenya) played key roles in these movements.
