Lively Beachside Walk at Imperial Beach Pier | Drive & Walk Tour | San Diego California Travel 2021
Hi, friends! We're so excited to share this lively beachside walk tour we did at Imperial Beach Pier!
We've visited a couple times but never on a Saturday afternoon and we were delighted to see the bustling downtown area of Imperial Beach (or IB to some)! ????
We started our video by driving through Silver Strand (where we concluded our previous video) heading to IB. We enjoyed the soothing sounds of waves crashing by the shore and then walked towards The Spirit of Imperial Beach Statue where people were lounging and catching the sunset.
Along Seacoast Drive, we walked past Pizzeria Luigi which had lines of people (and great reviews!), the Surf Hut, the Sea180 Restaurant at the Pier South Resort, Dunes Park, Mike Hess Brewing which had a nice weekend crowd.
Some familiar restaurants we saw from previous videos were seen in this episode, too, like Brigantine Seafood and Coronado Brewing Company.
One of the highlights (and my personal favorite) is people saying hi to the camera ???? Also, the lively vibe of IB and that chilly walk along the pier!

Get to know one of San Diego's hottest neighborhoods
Imperial Beach
THE VIBE:
Located in San Diego’s South Bay region, and the southernmost beach town in California, Imperial Beach is just five miles north of the Mexico border, and includes a 4-mile stretch of beach offering a host of activities including great surfing, sport fishing, beach volleyball and horseback riding along the coast. The Imperial Beach pier provides sweeping views of the Los Coronados Islands and is a popular spot for strolling, pier fishing and watching the sunset. Imperial Beach is connected to Coronado by way of the Silver Strand, a narrow, 7 mile long isthmus, popular for camping, bird watching and bicycling.
Imperial Beach is also home to the Tijuana River National Estuary, a place where the fresh water of the Tijuana River mixes with the salt water of the Pacific Ocean creating the largest salt water marsh in Southern California. The estuary is one of the top birding spots in San Diego with many endangered birds and wildlife on display. Close by you’ll also find the Living Coast Discovery Center, a family and budget friendly aquarium experience.
There’s a host of annual events to entertain including free fish derbies, triathlons and the annual Sun & Sea Festival featuring elaborate, awe-inspiring works of (temporary!) sandcastle art. Other art in the area includes the Surfboard Museum, an outdoor public art project exploring the history of surfing in Imperial Beach.
WHERE TO GO
The Pier in Imperial Beach, a few blocks south of Evergreen Avenue is a popular spot for beach-goers, with grassy parks, recreational facilities, shopping and eateries in the area.
Tijuana River National Estuary for great birdwatching.
I.B. Outdoor Surf Museum, a public art project located in and around the pier. Below the 10 surfboard benches, look for the plaques that tell the story of what surfing means to the community.

Imperial Beach Pier
A 5.5 miles mile walk at Imperial Beach. Views from the Pier, the Beach and the Tijuana River Estuary. This is the Southernmost beach in California and borders Mexico.

I parked near the pier and started my walk to the end. The pier is made of wooded planks and is over one-quarter of a mile long.
.
Part of the pier is open for fishing. The surf zone is closed to the fishermen. At the end of the pier is the Tin Fish Restaurant and is open with outdoor sitting. I walked to the end and headed back.

Sandy Beach
I walked on the beach south in the sand. There were only two surfers out. I headed back to the sidewalk.

Tijuana River Estuary
Along the route is the Tijuana River Estuary. This is an important wetlands for waterfowl and other wildlife. I saw a Snowy Egret and many other birds here.

The Dunes
Along the beach there is a long man-made dune to help keep the sea from encompassing all of the wetlands. The dunes separate the Pacific Ocean and the Tijuana River until the mouth of the river.

Tijuana, Mexico
At the mouth of the Tijuana River you can see the city of Tijuana, Mexico just a couple miles south. I took some photos here and turned around to go back to the pier.

Back at the end of the pier I had a cold Big Wave ale and a bowl of clam chowder for a fitting end of the walk.
