Have you heard of Spanish ham - jamón serrano and jamón ibérico (otherwise known as serrano ham and iberico ham)? Have you tasted it? If you have, you'll know that in the world of Spanish food, ham is king! Cured ham from Spain is perhaps the most delicious cured meat in the world. It can be rich and complex like a fine wine. But there are so many grades, and so much confusion about what the different between them are. What's jamón ibérico? What's jamón serrano? What's pata negra! (And remember - it's not called jambon - that's French!). Join me as I discover Spain's famous ham in a traditional market in Madrid. Watch, learn and drool!

Asia's Only LATIN TOWN (They Speak Spanish Here)

After many years, I finally made it down to ZAMBOANGA, a lovely town in the very South Western corner of the Philippines!

Believe it or not, they speak SPANISH here! Well, it's not 100% Spanish, it's called Chabacano which is more of a Creole (mixed) dialect that developed when the Spaniards settled here almost 500 years ago.

Not surprisingly, Zamboanga is dubbed Asia's Latin Town for its strong roots in Spanish culture that can be seen not only in the language but also in the cuisine and lifestyle.

I've had a GREAT time here so far and I hope this video opens your eyes to a lesser-known part of the Philippines -- my favorite country in the world.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

The 100% Foolproof Way Of Learning Any Language is..

For the past 18 years, I've only had one hobby that I never gave up: learning foreign languages. A bit of a strange choice for an American, I know. But I had a good reason for it. I wanted to travel the world someday, even though I didn't have the money to do it. If I learned Spanish, that had to help somehow with getting me to Latin America, right?

Turns out it did. Most people think learning a language is extremely difficult and you have to be super smart to do it. Nah. You speak English, don't you? Well you've already learned one language then. Learning more is as simple as knowing how to study languages on your own, following a good framework, and having lots of persistence. In this video I'll lay out the steps I use to learn any language. Follow them, and the world is yours.

Spanish Language | Weather in Spain

Spain Culture and Weather
Spain is a sovereign state and a part of European Union, is located in southwest in Europe occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula. If we consider the area, Spain is the world's 52nd largest country.

Islands, Mountain and Rivers:
Spain includes the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, ad a large number of uninhabited Islands on the side of Mediterranean. Canary Islands, 90 km off the west coast of The Africa, are of volcanic origin. The large central islands, Gran Canatis and Tenerife, have the highest peak. In Spain, Mainland Spain is a mountainous country, and dominated by mountain chains and high plateaus.

There are some major rivers in Spain like as the Ebro, the Duero, the Tagus, the Guadalquivir, and the Guadiana. Alluvial plains are also found along the coast, the biggest of which is that of Guadalquivir in Andalusia.

Climate:
The climate in Spain varies across the country. In Spain there are three climate zones are available, based on orographic conditions and geographical situation, namely the Oceanic Climate, the semiarid climate and the Mediterranean climate. Apart from these three main climate zone, there are other sub-zones that can also be found, such as a typical subtropical climate in Canary Islands, and the alpine climate in the Sierra Nevada and Pyrenees.

The Semiarid climate can be found in the south eastern part of this country, mainly in the region of Ebro valley and in the Murcia. In contrast to the main Mediterranean climate, the dry season continues till the end of summer.

The Mediterranean climate is classified by the cool and wet winters, and dry and warm summers. According to Köppen climate classification, it is dominating in the Iberian Peninsula, with two main varieties: Csa and Csb.
The Oceanic climate is found in the northern area of the country, mainly in the regions of Asturias, Basque Country, Galicia and Cantabria.

Language in Spain:
Culturally, Spain is a Western Country and is openly multilingual country, and constitution established that the nation will protect all Spaniards and the peoples of Spain in the exercise of their cultures and traditions, human rights, languages and institution.

Spanish is the official language of the entire country, and it is the duty and right of every Spaniard to understand this language. The other official languages of this country, co-official with Spanish language are- Galician in Galicia, Catalan in Catalonia and Basque in the Navarre and Basque Country. Spanish is nearly related to the other Iberian Romance Languages: Aragonese, Ladino, Catalan, Galician, Leonese, Asturian, Portuguese and Mirandese. This language has many borrowing from other languages and French and Italian languages have also contributed in its vocabulary.

Vocabulary:
Few words can be different in Spanish language, in different Hipanophone countries. Spanish speakers can easily recognize other Spanish forms, even in the places where they they are not generally used. But in other way, Spaniards do not recognize specifically American usage. Taking as an Example, Spanish mantequilla, aguacate and albaricoque correspond to Manteca, palta, and damasco, respectively, in Chile, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay and Paraguay.

⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
The longer you live in a place, you start to take on certain traits that are unique to that place. And so I decided it was time to see what Spanish habits I’m starting to take on. Here’s the list!

#1: I love a good bocadillo de patata
When I first arrived, the bocadillo de tortilla de patatas (Spanish omelette sandwich seemed crazy to me - potato and bread)! But now I’ve learned to love it, especially when the tortilla is nice and gooey.

#2. I love polvorones
These are very dry little cakes that we eat at Christmas. When I first got here, I could handle them. So dry! But then one day I fell in love. And now I’m sold. I even went through a phase of eating them for breakfast!

#3. I crave seasonal Spanish dishes
When winter rolls around, I start to crave a big cocido. It’s such a wonderful winter stew. And eating it with friends and family is an event. And then once the weather starts to warm up for summer, I’m hanging out for that first sip of horchata!

#4. I crave casqueria (offal)
This one took a while, but one day I just realised that I needed a plate of callos (cow stomach). It was cold, and I wanted that delicious, meaty flavour and a big, bold glass of red.

#5. I love a post-lunch walk
After a big lunch in a village, we love a good walk here in Spain. It’s practically a ritual. And now it’s something I really look forward to after we’ve had the gin and tonic or a post-meal cup of coffee.

#6. I love the intimacy of a crowd
I stole this term from the book Madrid: A Cultural and Literary Companion by Elizabeth Nash. She writes how people in Spain love the intensity that being in a crowd provides. I love stepping into a heaving tapas bar and there being people all around me, and no room to move!

Here is the link to the book I mention:

#7. I’m less of a ‘pesado’
When I first arrived I would ask questions that didn’t have answers. Things like, “When will the party finish?” “How long do you think this coffee with a friend will take?” or “What are your opening hours in the summer?” Crazy!

#8. I’m becoming disillusioned with politics
After 8 years living in a country with a lot of corruption and dysfunctional politics, I’ve learned to be a little more cynical… sadly!

#9. I love the dry landscape of Castilla
It’s pretty dry around Madrid - often quite brown and a little treeless. But I’ve learned to find beauty in the simplicity of the landscape.

#10. Spanish is slipping into my English
Lots of Spanish words are slipping into my speech when I’m speaking English. Pesado, lio, tramites, gestor, factura… Because these words have so many cultural connotations!

#11. I enjoy Spanish swear words
There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good swear. And finally, I’m feeling satisfaction is saying Spanish swear words, j0der!

In this video I'm in the capital of Peru, Lima!! I spend my time exploring Lima's famous culinary scene and getting to know the neighbourhoods. Most visitors to Peru skip Lima and head straight to the touristic city of Cusco, or just spend one day in Lima as a stop over. I think this is a MASSIVE MISTAKE! Lima is such an authentic Latin American city and it has the BEST cuisine in the world in my opinion. There are so many famous dishes to try including ceviche, causa, lomo saltado, a mix of seafood and meat options and compared to the rest of South America the flavours are anything but bland! I'd dedicate at least a few days here to soak up the unique Latin American vibe of Lima and try all its incredible food, and even then you probably won't get to try all of it!

My day in Valencia studying at the Spanish Language School

I'm excited to start a new chapter on my YouTube channel - Learning the Foreign Languages!
In July 2023, I went to Valencia to attend language school and practice my Spanish for a week. I was placed to a group with A2 level. I'll show you what I used to do during the day as a student. I attended ELE Aleph school in Valencia, and I was more than happy with it. I started speaking Spanish for a little bit, order food in the cafes, and ask questions if needed. Join this language adventure with me!
