The Ship Breaking Yards of CHITTAGONG, BANGLADESH

In this vlog I visited the famous ship breaking yards of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Chittagong is known in the shipping industry as the place where ships go to die, but it's also made the news in recent years because of the extremely dangerous working conditions that the men working in the yards are often forced to endure.

Chittagong Ship Breaking Yards - Chittagong, Bangladesh

This is just a glimpse. I realize it is not particularly enlightening and I am not particularly articulate. The fact is I was a bit stupefied by the experience. I should have taken a hell of a lot more video and delved much, much deeper. You think you can mentally prepare yourself but you really cannot....not for this. This short video is a supplement for my online journal. You can read the story behind the clip at

Ship breaking in Bangladesh

Photos from 3 visits to the ship breaking yards in Chittagong in Bangladesh. An unusual experience from a unique place, where large ships are taken apart by hundreds of workers with bare feet and the traditional clothing, a skirt called a Longi. No protection and a lot of pollutions. Every year many people die in the effort of taking the ships apart.

Experiences in unknown Bangladesh. The ship breaking yards of Cittagong II

Experiences in unknown Bangladesh: God knows, Chittagong, on the Bay of Bengal, has more to offer than scrapping yards. But these are among the largest in the world. Spectacular insights into the working life of people and the slow death of the ocean liners await. This industry developed in 1969. There are over 70 companies between Bhatiara and Sitakunda. About 200,000 people live directly from scrapping ships. Around 40 percent of the world's decommissioned ocean-going vessels are currently being dismantled. Sales in 2015 are estimated to be around $ 900 million.

Teenagers Took Us On A Boat in THE SHIP BREAKING YARDS I Chittagong, Bangladesh ????????

In the South of Bangladesh is a stretch of coastline dotted with old ships, waiting to be broken down and recycled. We got up close to these ships and even visited a local village, many of whose families rely on the ship breaking yards for income.
