The Ring of Dingle - Ireland's Dingle Peninsula

The Dingle Peninsula in Southwestern Ireland is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The area has been designated an area of special interest by the government in order to help preserve the unique Celtic culture and language. Gaelic is the offical language but in consideration of the tourists English is widely spoken but most of the signs are in Gaelic. If you like unspoiled natuaral scenery, The Ring of Dingle is a must see.

Exploring the DINGLE Peninsula - DINGLE Town and Epic Slea Head Drive!

The Dingle Peninsula is home to one of Ireland's most epic and scenic roads the Slea Head Drive. In this video, we visit the only town on the peninsula, DINGLE for some charming colourful buildings, excellent nightlife and food.
If you missed part 1 we drove the Ring of Kerry in a day with more stunning locations and attractions so do check that out!

Spending the night in Dingle town, we got to feel the charm and tradition of Ireland. Colourful shops, pubs and B&Bs make this an exciting and delightful place to stay.
Join us as we have a few drinks in Dick Mack's, the Dingle pub and end the night in An Droichead Beag for some toe-tapping accordion music and Guinness.
Starting our drive in a clockwise route the next morning, we hug the coastline and soon arrive at Fahan and the Beehive Huts. There are two places to stop, the second is larger and has better facilities if you need the toilet on route. (Probably the last stop before you have completed the Slea Head Drive)
The road starts cutting into the cliff face and the narrow winding roads become challenging, especially if you meet a car coming in the other direction.
There are various stopping points where a few cars at a time can pull in safely. The Slea Head Cross is one of those.
Dunquin, near the ferry's entrance, has some stunning walks along the rugged coast. Take a detour off the Slea Head route follow the signs for the ferries and you will soon arrive!
In all, you could drive round in about an hour but with all the stops you need to do expect to spend at least 3 or 4 hours on this amazing drive.

Back in Dingle, there is a second attraction that many forget or don’t see on a tour. Conor Pass. Heading out of Dingle north you start to climb the hills quickly and your ears soon pop as you rise up over 2000 ft.
Conor Pass on a good day ( we had a bad wet day) offers panoramic views across Ireland. Top tip: don’t just stop at the top and come back into Dingle, carry on the drive all the way back down before it re-joins the N86 near Camp. You won’t regret it!

Dingle Peninsula, Ireland

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Also, watch our new movie about the shops and pubs of Dingle:
We are at the western edge of Europe visiting Dingle on the Atlantic coast of Ireland. We are taking a drive out into the countryside to the Slea Head panoramic loop with marvelous scenery, lots of green hills, sheep, stone walls and archaeological sites. This is some of the best scenery in Ireland if not the world.
Dingle is out on the peninsula a little bit hard to get to and yet it's one of the nicest places in Ireland - it's got the urban charm of the town but it's a small town, and has beautiful natural countryside we explore in this episode.
Most visitors find the real attraction is the surrounding areas with the beautiful countryside and the historic sites, with a few minute’s drive you’re at the edge of town and in the countryside almost immediately. Driving from Dingle out around the peninsula and back again is just about 25 miles so you can easily do it in half a day while stopping to look at the sites. We're lucky that some of Ireland's prehistory is still quite visible with stone structures that have survived for thousands of years. The :beehive hut” stone domes site was occupied until about 1200 A.D. by which time it had evolved into a farmstead for an extended family with the habitation site and with the corrals and room for livestock farm buildings and storage places.

The Ring Of Kerry: Drive it in a Day - Best Things to See, County Kerry, Ireland

If you drive the Ring of Kerry in a day, how much can you really see? Take our road trip guide and see the top things to do in a day.

The Drive starts in Killarney National Park at Ross Castle, moving on to Muck Ross House and then the short walk from there to Torc Waterfall.
Driving out of the Park we head up into the hills and see Panoramic views of the lakes and National park at Ladies View, stopping for an early lunch.
Hugging the coastline along Kenmare Bay, there are plenty of places to pull over and take in the views.
Arriving at one of the furthest points Park Plaza we can see Skellig Michael (even though overcast) this was a famous filming location for Star Wars The Last Jedi

Continuing round the route Ballycarberry Castle now derelict and sadly not accessible close-up, but you can still get some good pictures from 100 metres away. It is also near to the Leacanabuaile Stone Fort. On top of the hill you get panoramic views of area and Castle.

It took us about 9 hours to do the drive, before starting to head for Dingle our stop for the night. From there we will tour the Slea Head Drive, and see how it compares to the Ring of Kerry.

There is so much to see and do. We have shown you just a small amount of things and really stuck to the road route. You need a few days to explore all the attractions in the centre of the Peninsula.

Three things to keep in mind for all our videos:

1 - See a place you like? Comment with the specific timestamp (by typing for example 2:23 or 9:07) and I'll try to get back to you with the coordinates of that exact spot as best I can. Ireland is too beautiful not to share it with as many people as possible, so if you see a nice shot in any of my videos, let me know by commenting the timestamp!

2 - All our videos are mainly focused on tourists who want to get the most out of their Ireland visit (although please enjoy even if you are not in this category!). As such, they are 'beginner level', as there is so much to share about Irish history, nature and culture. This is a field that has a lot of enthusiasts in it. If you are one of those, you probably know way more about the subject than is shared in the video. Keep in mind that the intent of all the videos is to be at an introductory level so that visitors can get the most out of their trip and start to get familiar with what they will see when they visit Ireland. Be kind in your words and keep it civil in the comments. I'd love for you to share even more information in the comments so that everyone can keep on learning about this great island!

3 - Take responsibility for your own travels. These videos are meant to share my own love as an immigrant to Ireland, and as an inspiration for future visitors. They are not intended to tell you what to do or how to do it. Travelling has an inherent danger to it. Ireland is not a 'curated' playground. It is a real country, with its own beauty and shortcomings. The roads are small and windy. There are seldom fences at cliffs. The mountains are slippery, and the bogs soggy. Prepare yourself accordingly when you visit. Be smart, don't take unnecessary risks, and take responsibility for your own travels. Through being well-prepared and making smart decisions, I hope you will have a great stay and that our videos have played a small role in your enjoyment.

Ireland, Dingle town & peninsula,

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Also, watch our new movie about the shops and pubs of Dingle,
We've been exploring the West Coast of Ireland and now we’re visiting Dingle which some people would say is the finest destination in the country. Dingle is a lush green peninsula extending out into the Atlantic Ocean.
Entering the Dingle Peninsula and passing through villages of Blennerville, Camp and Annascaul.
We stop by the roadside for a lovely view looking down towards the coast and across the green fields.
Next stop, Dingle, our home base for the next couple days. The town is one of Ireland's best with excellent hotels, of course many pubs, and in recent years, Dingle has become one of the gourmet capitals of the country with many fine restaurants. We will be taking you inside a couple of them. The drive in gave us a nice overview and will be taking you on several walks through town.
Most visitors find the real attraction is the surrounding areas with the beautiful countryside and the historic sites. With a few minute’s drive, you are at the edge of town and beyond that, you're in the countryside almost immediately.
So we hop in our van and do a tour of the peninsula. It's not unusual to run into some rain when you're out here in the far tip of Europe, in the Atlantic Ocean. And we had some rain this morning, but it cleared up a little bit during the day.
Dingle is a peninsula sticking into the sea at the western edge of Europe, set amid wild green scenery surrounded by the ocean.
One of the main historic sites you'll see is Dunbeg Fort. It's quite typical of the Celtic fortresses of the Iron Age in Ireland. It's built right up against the edge of a cliff, so it's easy to defend itself with the big walls on one side and the sea cliff on the other.

The Best of West Ireland: Dingle, Galway, and the Aran Islands

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2002 | Deepest Ireland is best experienced on its Gaelic-speaking west coast, where the rugged villages have changed little over the generations. After exploring the remote Aran Islands, we visit Galway, chase a friendly dolphin, and delve into the scenic Dingle Peninsula. Ringing with music from its rustic pubs and dotted with prehistoric forts, this region is something special. If you're to fall in love with Ireland, chances are it'll be right here. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #ireland
