Montserrat: A Hidden Gem

My cousin and I visited our grandparents on an island called Montserrat. It's located in the West Indie islands of the Caribbean. Many people have never heard of this country because half the island was destroyed by the island's volcano. It's a beautiful place that you should all check out one day!

Here are some highlights from the trip. Let me know what you think!

Tour Montserrat With Us | Tiny Volcanic Island | Giant In Music History

In this vlog, learn more about Montserrat with us, as we tour this beautiful island.

Some Facts About Montserrat:

1. Montserrat is a volcanic island in the South-Eastern Caribbean.
2. Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano, which had been dormant for centuries, became active in July 1995, erupted, and buried the capital city of Plymouth, which is considered a modern-day Pompeii. The most recent eruption of Montserrat’s Soufriere Hills volcano was on June 25, 1997.
3. After the eruptions, the majority of the island’s population fled the island, mostly for the United Kingdom.
4. The population in Montserrat, at present, is approximately 5000 people.
5. Being a volcanic island, most of Montserrat’s beaches are black sand beaches.
6. Montserrat can be visited by small aircrafts, ferries, and other boats of similar size. The most straightforward way to Visit Montserrat is by flying from Antigua.
7. Montserrat is called the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean due to its Irish heritage and also its lush green land.
8. Montserrat is the only country outside of Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as a national holiday. The St. Patrick’s Day celebration is the biggest celebration of the year on the island.
9. Montserrat is especially well-known in the music industry thanks, in part, to AIR Studios Montserrat, a state-of-the-art recording studio built by Sir George Martin, world-renowned producer of the Beatles. This is where Stevie Wonder recorded “Ebony and Ivory” with Paul McCartney. Many other artists, including Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Duran Duran, and Eric Clapton recorded at AIR Studios Montserrat.
10. Arrow, also known as the Might Arrow, the original artist who created the soca hit “Hot Hot Hot” is Montserratian. He recorded “Hot Hot Hot” at AIR Studios Montserrat.

Getting to Montserrat

We leave the bitter cold of Quebec's winter and head to Montserrat in the Caribbean. Our trip is home from Montreal airport to Antigua, and from Antigua we take a small plane to Monserrat. It was a long and stressfull day due to a storm in Montreal which made us take off close to 2 hours late. The next few videos will show more of the island.

Montserrat, the new Pompeii - Plymouth, the ghost capital

Montserrat was a green paradise lost in the blue of the Caribbean sea. But it was without counting with the furious and terrible Madame Soufrière !
Three times the south and east of the island were ravaged by the volcano, burying the pretty white town of Plymouth with tons of burning ashes. Since then, cut in half, Montserrat has been monitoring the volcano, which is still roaring and threatening.
And Plymouth, the new Pompeii, has become the only ghost capital in the world of a two-faced island.

Music : Tristan Lohengrin : The end of the world.

Plymouth

Plymouth was the capital City of Montserrat before it was devistated by the volcano.
