Liechtenstein | One-Minute Getaway

Liechtenstein celebrates its 300th anniversary in 2019.

RELATED: Bath, England | One Minute Getaway

Tucked deep in the Alps between Switzerland and Austria lies Liechtenstein, one of the world’s smallest and richest countries. The 37,000 citizens have one of the highest per-capita incomes in the world, and it’s only 15 miles long and 7 miles wide at its broadest point. But this pint-sized principality packs major appeal. Turreted castles dot the mountainous terrain, and outdoor enthusiasts will find numerous trails for hiking and skiing. You'll find Alpine villages and Rhine meadows, as well as picturesque vineyards rolling down the hillsides.

Liechtenstein Travel

Liechtenstein , officially the Principality of Liechtenstein (German: Fürstentum Liechtenstein),[7] is a doubly landlocked German-speaking microstate in Central Europe.[8] It is a constitutional monarchy with the rank of principality, headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein.

Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. It has an area of just over 160 square kilometres (62 square miles) and an estimated population of 37,000. Divided into 11 municipalities, its capital is Vaduz and its largest municipality is Schaan.

Economically, Liechtenstein has one of the highest gross domestic product per person in the world when adjusted for purchasing power parity,[9] and the highest when not adjusted by purchasing power parity. The unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the world at 1.5%. Liechtenstein has previously been known as a billionaire tax haven, however is no longer on any blacklists of uncooperative tax haven countries, see taxation section.

An alpine country, Liechtenstein is mainly mountainous, making it a winter sport destination. Many cultivated fields and small farms are found both in the south (Oberland, upper land) and north (Unterland, lower land). The country has a strong financial sector centered in Vaduz. Liechtenstein is a member of the European Free Trade Association, and while not being a member of the European Union, the country participates in both the Schengen Area and European Economic Area. It also has a customs union and a monetary union with Switzerland.

Liechtenstein Travel Video Guide

Liechtenstein Travel Video Guide: The Principality of Liechtenstein (German: Fürstentum Liechtenstein) is a small, alpine German-speaking country doubly landlocked by Switzerland and Austria. It is the last remnant of the Holy Roman Empire and an independent nation with very close ties to Switzerland. It enjoys a very high standard of living and is home to some incredibly beautiful mountain scenery. The principality's capital, Vaduz, is mainly a modern city and a major centre of commerce and international banking.

The Principality of Liechtenstein was established within the Holy Roman Empire in 1719 and became a sovereign state in 1806. Until the end of World War I, it was closely tied to Austria, but the economic devastation caused by that conflict forced Liechtenstein to conclude a customs and monetary union with Switzerland. Since World War II (in which Liechtenstein remained neutral), the country's low taxes have spurred outstanding economic growth.

Shortcomings in banking regulatory oversight have resulted in concerns about the use of the financial institutions for money laundering and tax evasion. However, the days of bringing suitcases of money into banks for deposit without questions asked is over. Liechtensteiners are also very proud of the fact that their nation has never been physically involved in a battle or military confrontation with an enemy state and see their flag as a banner of peace.

The Principality of Liechtenstein

The principality of Liechtenstein covers a 62-square mile (160km²) area nestled between Switzerland and Austria. It is the fourth-smallest country in Europe and the sixth-smallest country in the world. Liechtenstein is independent nation with very close ties to Switzerland. It enjoys a very high standard of living and is home to some incredibly beautiful mountain scenery. The principality's capital, Vaduz, is mainly a modern city and a major center of commerce and international banking.

In 1921, Liechtenstein became a constitutional monarchy run by hereditary princes with real, not just symbolic, power. A new constitution - much of which remains valid today - established a single-house parliament to which all 25 members are elected by the populace for four-year terms. But while the legislators draw up the laws, it is the Reigning Prince who ultimately approves them.
