The Karakoram Highway - from China to Pakistan

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) runs from Kashgar in Western China to Islamabad in Pakistan, and isn't so much a highway as a 'high road'. It took a stunning 20 years to finish the road, and even today it continues to suffer from extreme weather and environmental disasters.

The KKH runs through the highest concentration of soaring mountain peaks and raging rivers in the world, and is generally considered to be among the most spectacular areas on our planet. Traveling here isn't for the faint hearted, although transportation has improved significantly in the past decades.

In October 2010 I had the chance to travel the Karakoram Highway. Although Pakistan had suffered its worst floods in recent history the same year, most parts of the road were still intact. Nevertheless, traveling the road proved a massive challenge and also a great adventure. As these events had scared off many tourists and travelers, I found myself among locals for nearly all of the time.

Documentary about Karakoram Highway (KKH) to China

The Karakoram Highway is one of those legendary roads to travel in Asia. The name implies it's a big 2 or 4 way street. In fact, it's not even close to a highway but it is a road. This road is the road that connects Pakistan to China, for many years. It's a magnificent road!
KKH as it is known starts actually in Abbottabad. Up to this town the road is 4 way street and pretty busy.

The legend of the KKH is long and spectacular. Everybody has heard of the legendary Silk Road. As the legend goes, it was the road where silk was transported from China to Europe. The truth of the Silk Road is slightly different.
In the old days there were no merchants traveling the whole route. In fact, silk and other goods from China were transported via different roads, which includes the legendary road Marco Polo traveled. However, goods were usually traded in cities on the roads going west and south (looking from Chinese perspective.

Therefore we can't say there was one Silk Road. In fact, there were many. The Karakoram Highway as we know the road nowadays was one of those Silk Roads. From Kashgar (or Kashi as it is known in China) goods were transported over the Khunjarab Pass to the lower lands of the western Indian subcontinent. It was a hard and dangerous road. And even today, it's still a hard road.
The Karakoram highway ends in Kashgar, the great trade city in the far west of China. Marco Polo writes about Kashgar. Walking on the legendary market, and reading Marco Polo's diary, one can see there's not much changed in 700 years. Kashgars' Sunday Market is still a must have seen in the whole of Central Asia and China.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this journey in Samarkand, one of the most iconic cities along the ancient Silk Road. Located in Uzbekistan, it’s full of remarkable monuments but also provides a good introduction into daily life, especially in the lively farmers markets and bazaars. After Samarkand, we go to the Caucasus, to visit the fast developing capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku. Visiting the modern shopping malls and vibrant streets gives an interesting contrast with the narrow alleys of the old town here, and the wide promenade facing the Caspian Sea.

The Pamir Highway in Tajikistan is one of the most challenging, but also rewarding, travel destinations in Central Asia. It requires solid preparation, and many tourists decide to hire experienced travelers and guides for their trips. Back in Uzbekistan, the Fergana Valley takes you back in time, with charming villages, and an opportunity to view a traditional silk weaving factory.

Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, is the modern capital city of Kazakhstan, and sometimes nicknamed as ‘Dubai of the Steppe’. It’s an interesting place to visit, and attracts people from across the country to work, study, and live. Back in the Caucasus, Tbilisi is steeped in history, and full of culture and charisma. The stunning Tsminda Sameba Cathedral is an important place of worship in the Georgia’s Orthodox Christian religion.

In Kyrgyzstan you will find some of the region’s most traditional ways of life, as nomadic shepherd families still move from villages to classic yurts. Traveling across the green pastures is a great way to experience a lifestyle that seems unusual in many societies these days. The capital city of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, is a peculiar place on the list. Regarded as a secretive dictatorship, Turkmenistan is also one of the most mysterious and closed countries in the world. Keep in mind that people here face severe limitations in their daily lives.

Armenia is a beautiful destination in the Caucasus, and includes the friendly capital Armenia, and several stunning medieval monasteries. We finish this journey in Bukhara, another important stop on the historic Silk Road. There are many mosques and other landmarks to visit, but it’s also just a friendly town where you can eat some delicious food and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

Along the Silk Road | From China to Pakistan | Ep 3 | Shanghai and Suzhou

Our journey on the Silk Road began from Shanghai, China's largest city, where we arrived on a night flight from Karachi. Taking a high speed train at 300km/h to the city centre, we made our way towards the bustling waterfront. After a day taking in the sights and sounds of the big city, we make our way towards Suzhou, the city of canals and gardens. We visit a silk production factory, and see firsthand the process that sparked the Silk Road.

Join us on this immersive exploration, as we traverse the mesmerizing landscapes, delve into the cultural tapestry, and retrace the footsteps of the traders and travelers who once journeyed along this legendary route.

To truly understand the Karakoram Highway, we must first delve into the history of the Silk Road. The Silk Road was a network of ancient trade routes that spanned thousands of miles, connecting the East and West. It facilitated the exchange of silk, spices, precious gems, and cultural ideas between China, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Shahra-e-Karakoram, or the Karakoram Highway, became an integral part of the Silk Road, serving as a crucial trade artery connecting China's Xinjiang region to Pakistan's northern areas. Our journey begins here, at the intersection of history, culture, and commerce.

The construction of the Karakoram Highway in the 1960s was an engineering marvel, a testament to human determination and ambition. This chapter explores the challenges faced by the engineers, laborers, and the governments of Pakistan and China as they worked tirelessly to build this high-altitude road.

We'll discuss the innovative engineering solutions that were employed to tackle treacherous terrain, including the infamous Attabad Lake landslide in 2010. The Karakoram Highway stands as a symbol of Pakistan and China's collaboration and friendship, and we'll delve into the geopolitical significance of this strategic route.

One of the highlights of our journey along the Karakoram Highway is the breathtaking natural beauty that surrounds us. As we drive through this high-altitude region, we'll encounter towering peaks, pristine lakes, glaciers, and deep valleys.

The Karakoram Range, including the world's second-highest peak, K2, will captivate our senses. We'll visit stunning landmarks like Passu Cones, Hunza Valley, and the surreal Shishpar Lake. The Karakoram Highway is a gateway to adventure, offering opportunities for trekking, mountaineering, and experiencing the unique flora and fauna of this region.

Our exploration of the Karakoram Highway wouldn't be complete without understanding the diverse cultures and communities that call this region home. We'll meet the warm and hospitable people of Gilgit-Baltistan, who have preserved their unique traditions and customs for generations.

In the modern era, the Karakoram Highway continues to play a crucial role in trade between Pakistan and China. We'll discuss the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and its impact on regional development and economic growth. The Silk Road may have evolved, but its spirit lives on along Shahra-e-Karakoram.

Our journey along the Karakoram Highway, Shahra-e-Karakoram, has been a remarkable adventure through time and space. From its historic roots as part of the Silk Road to its modern-day significance in international trade, this route has left an indelible mark on the world.

We've witnessed the awe-inspiring landscapes, met the resilient people of the region, and learned about the highway's vital role in connecting Pakistan and China. Shahra-e-Karakoram is not just a road; it's a testament to human ingenuity, nature's grandeur, and the enduring legacy of the Silk Road.

We invite you to explore Shahra-e-Karakoram for yourself, whether in person or through the lens of this documentary. Join us on this unforgettable journey through history, culture, and the timeless beauty of the Karakoram Highway.

A trip along the Karakorum Highway to Karimabad via Gilgit. The visit coincided with the Aga Khan's visit. We visited a glacier near Karimabad, and saw the Altit and Baltit Forts. The scene towards the end of the visit of men clearing lose rock above the Karakorum put me on edge - didn't look very safe!
