Mount of Olives: the place where Jesus will return!

The Mount of Olives is a very special place in Jerusalem, Israel. It is the place where Jesus prayed before he was arrested, specifically in the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the mountain. It was also the place where he ascended to heaven. And Old Testament prophet Zechariah says in chapter 14 that this mountain is also the place where Messiah will return.

Watch this short study by Pastor Sebastiaan van Wessem of Celebration Church and KNGDM Alliance as he explains what Mount of Olives is all about!

During biblical times, the Mount of Olives was covered with ancient olive trees and is one mountain north of Mt. Zion with breathtaking views of the Old City, the City of David, and the Kidron Valley.
It was there that Jesus encouraged His disciples and gave them their instructions after He would be crucified (Matthew 24).
Jesus spent the night there before His arrest, in the gardens at Gethsemane. It was on this mount where He wept over Jerusalem. “When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it.” (Luke 19:41)
Just below the Mount of Olives, close to the Church of all Nations, there is the place where Christian tradition says that Mary, the mother or Jesus was buried. The Church of all Nations is a Roman Catholic Church where it is believed that Jesus prayed before His arrest.
At the bottom of the Mount of Olives is an ancient olive garden. Olive trees do not have rings and so their age cannot be precisely determined, but scholars estimate their age to be anywhere between one and two thousand years old.

During the time of the First and Second Temples, the Mount of Olives was the place where the high priest used to slaughter and burn the 'Red Cow', whose ashes purify those who are impure at the Temple. The Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery began during the period of the First Temple, however the tombs that are there today are from the 16th century and on. It’s worthwhile considering that this mount is not only a geographical link between the desert and the fertile hills of Jerusalem - it is also the spiritual link between heaven and earth or life and death. Many people desire to be buried on the Mount of Olives where the Messiah is expected to arrive.

FROM THE SCRIPTURES
Zechariah chapter 14:
4 In that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south.

Matthew 24:
3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, 'Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?' 4 And Jesus answered them, 'Take heed that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ', and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: 8 all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs.'

...Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it. (John 18:1)

Built in 1924 on the traditional site of the Garden of Gethsemane, the Basilica of the Agony enshrines a section of bedrock identified as the place where Jesus prayed alone in the garden on the night of his arrest. Although it is not certain that this is the exact spot, the setting does fit the Gospel description, and the present church, designed by the architect Antonio Barluzzi, rests on the foundations of two earlier shrines: a 12th-century Crusader chapel, abandoned in 1345; and a 4th-century Byzantine basilica, destroyed by the earthquake in 746. (A rock on the way up to the Mount of Olives is mentioned by the Pilgrim of Bordeaux in 333, who identifies it as the place where Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus.)

The windows in the present church are made from translucent purplish-blue alabaster, which gives an intended dimmed-lighting effect to the interior. Six monolithic columns support 12 cupolas, the insides of which are decorated with mosaic tiles depicting the national emblems of the donor communities. This decoration gave rise to the popular name, Church of All Nations.

The name Gethsemane is a Greek form of the Hebrew gat shemanim ([olive] oil press). Eight olive trees in the adjoining garden are very ancient. (The dating of olive trees is difficult as they renew both trunk and root structure so that a young-looking tree may in fact have ancient roots).

In the garden is an open altar, placed there by the Franciscan fathers in an ecumenical gesture to the Anglican community, which holds Maundy Thursday services there on the eve of Good Friday.

What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water, and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many-faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be implanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Golden Gate footage filmed by Ionatan Muchnik.
Here is the link to the full video: bit.ly/GoldenGateJerusalem

Location
1. The Eastern Gate is located on the eastern side of the Temple Mount and faces the Mount of Olives.
2. It is an important gate because it plays a central role in Scripture and prophecy.
3. The current Old City of Jerusalem is surrounded by a wall containing eight major gates.
Lions Gate (Stephen’s Gate), Eastern Gate (Golden Gate, Shushan Gate), Dung Gate, Zion Gate, Jaffa Gate, New Gate, Damascus Gate, Herod’s Gate
4. The Eastern Gate is unique in that it is sealed shut.
5. It is the oldest gate in the Old City.

Historical Background
1. The original Eastern Gate was built by Solomon or at a later date by Hezekiah. The ancient posts located inside the gate today, along with the stones beside the gate of the Eastern Wall, date back to this time period and would affirm its early existence and location at its present-day site.
2. It is very likely that Nehemiah rebuilt the Eastern Gate when he rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in around 444 BC. Some believe the original gate was then named the Eastern Gate by Nehemiah at this time.
3. Herod the Great then rebuilt the Eastern Gate in around 19 BC and added a stairway, or rebuilt an existing one that led up to the gate. This stairway ran alongside the Eastern Wall.
4. The best evidence suggests that the gate was then rebuilt during the Umayyad period (661–750 AD) on the foundations of the earlier gate dating to the time of Solomon or Hezekiah. Part of the gate from this time period has been preserved.
As mentioned above, the remains of two massive ancient gateposts are preserved inside this gate. These gateposts are situated in the same line as the Eastern Wall of the Temple Mount. They also line up with the lower massive stone masonry on both sides of the Golden Gate. The gateposts, along with the masonry sections of the Eastern Wall, suggest they are all part of the same construction. The upper part of the southern gatepost is level with the top of the ancient stone masonry that can be seen south of the Golden Gate. The gatepost in the northern part of the gate is one stone course higher and is located just one stone course lower than the surface of the Temple Mount. These two ancient gateposts belong to the gate dating back to the First Temple period, which is most likely the Shushan Gate that is mentioned in Mishnah Middot 1.3. This gate was the only gate in the Eastern Wall at that time.
5. The current gate that is seen today was rebuilt by Suleiman in around 1541 AD and was built on the foundations of the earlier gates.
6. The Eastern Gate gives the most direct access to the Temple Mount from the Mount of Olives.
7. The Eastern Gate is unique in that it is completely sealed shut. Some commentators see the Eastern Gate’s obstruction as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy.
It was closed by the Muslims in 810 AD, reopened in 1102 AD by the Crusaders, and then walled up by Saladin after regaining Jerusalem in 1187 AD. Ottoman Sultan Suleiman rebuilt it together with the city walls but walled it up in 1541 AD, and it has stayed that way until today.
It’s believed that the reason for the closing of the Eastern Gate was to prevent the Jewish Messiah from gaining entrance to the temple on the Temple Mount.

The Eastern Gate in the Bible
1. It is the likely gate the ashes of the Red Heifer sacrifice were carried through and then deposited in a clean place outside the city (Num. 19:1–10).
2. The glory of the Lord left the temple because of Israel’s disobedience (Ezekiel 10:18–19; Ezekiel 11:23).
3. The glory of the Lord will return to the temple at Christ’s second coming (Ezekiel 43:1–5; Zechariah 14:4).
4. When Jesus entered Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives on Palm Sunday (Triumphal Entry), He most likely used the Eastern Gate (Luke 19:37–38; Luke 19:45–46).
5. It is the gate that Jesus would have entered and exited through repeatedly as He taught in the temple and then retreated to the Mount of Olives to rest and sleep (Luke 21:37–38).
6. The Beautiful Gate (most likely the Nicanor Gate) was where Peter and John healed a lame man (Acts 3:1–10).

The site of Christ’s ascension to heaven forty days after his resurrection is on the Mount of Olives across the Kidron Valley from the Old City of Jerusalem. The site is marked by a historic chapel. Luke 24:51 tells us that Jesus ascended to heaven forty days after his resurrection.

The Chapel of Ascension
At the end of the 4th century, the site was established as the place of the ascension by Emperor Constantine’s mother, Helena who was responsible for marking many biblical sites in the Holy Land. A Byzantine church was built here with a circular design; double rows of columns and an open roof.

The Byzantine church survived until the 7th century when it was destroyed by Persians. It was soon rebuilt and finally destroyed by the Arab conquerors in the 10th century. The Crusaders rebuilt the church in the 12th century basing their design on the earlier Byzantine structure. It too had two concentric circles of columns built on the surviving circular base of the Byzantine church.

In 1187, Jerusalem changed hands and Saladin turned the chapel into a mosque adding a stone dome and mihrab. The Ottomans later allowed Christians to continue praying here and the mosque was relocated to a building constructed adjacent to the chapel in 1620. In 1835 the Crusader structure was given a new roof and enclosed walls between the columns.

The chapel stands in an enclosed courtyard. Only slight changes have been made to the structure since the Crusader era. Not far from the Chapel of Ascension is the Russian Orthodox Church of Ascension in the At-Tur neighborhood. This is the site of the ascension according to the Russian Orthodox tradition.

Ascension Stone
The chapel holds a slab of stone bearing a right footprint. This is believed to be Jesus’ footprint left here as he stepped up to heaven. The left footprint in stone has been moved to the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Temple Mount.

Church of the Pater Noster
The Roman Catholic Church of the Pater Noster (Our Father) stands on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem alongside the ruins of the 4th century Church of Eleona; a Carmelite monastery; cloisters and a cave where Jesus is believed to have taught his apostle the Lord’s Prayer. The 2nd century apocryphal Acts of John mentions a cave on the Mt. of Olives where Jesus taught God’s word. The cave would have existed in Jesus’ lifetime and would have been a convenient site where Jesus and his disciples could have found a quiet, sheltered spot to learn the Lord’s Prayer.

History of the Site of the Pater Noster
The Church of Eleona was commissioned by the Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine I to commemorate the site of Christ’s ascension to heaven and was eventually destroyed in 614 by the Persians. In the 12th century, the Crusaders associated the site with the teaching of the Lord’s Prayer and built a church partially funded by the Bishop of Denmark who was buried here with his butler. The Crusader church fell into ruins in the 14th century. In the 19th century, the stones from the ruined church were taken and used as headstones.

The Jewish Cemetery on the Mount of Olives, including the Silwan necropolis, is the most ancient and most important cemetery in Jerusalem. Burial on the Mount of Olives started some 3,000 years ago in the First Temple Period, and continues to this day.[1] The cemetery contains anywhere between 70,000 and 2 or 300,000 tombs from various periods, including the tombs of famous figures in Jewish history.
History
In the 19th century special significance was attached to Jewish cemeteries in Jerusalem, since they were the last meeting place not only of Jerusalemites but also of Jews from all over the world. Over the years, many Jews in their old age came to Jerusalem in order to live out the rest of their lives there and to be buried in its holy soil.[2]

During the First and Second Temple Periods the Jews of Jerusalem were buried in burial caves scattered on the slopes of the Mount, and from the 16th century the cemetery began to take its present shape.[1]

The old Jewish cemetery sprawled over the slopes of the Mount of Olives overlooking the Kidron Valley (Valley of Jehoshaphat), radiating out from the lower, ancient part, which preserved Jewish graves from the Second Temple period; here there had been a tradition of burial uninterrupted for thousands of years. The cemetery was quite close to the Old City, its chief merit being that it lay just across the Kidron Valley from the Temple Mount: according to Jewish tradition, it is here that the Resurrection of the Dead would begin[2] once Messiah will appear on the Mount of Olives and head toward the Temple Mount.

Many famous names are buried in the cemetery such as Rabbi Chaim ibn Attar, known as the Ohr ha-Chaim, and Rabbi Yehuda Alcalay who were among the heralds of Zionism; Hasidic rebbes of various dynasties and Rabbis of Yishuv haYashan (the old – pre-Zionist - Jewish settlement) together with Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook, the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, and his circle; Henrietta Szold, the founder of the Hadassah organization; the poet Else Lasker-Schüler, Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, the father of Modern Hebrew, Shmuel Yosef Agnon, the Nobel Laureate for Literature, and Boris Schatz, the founder of the Bezalel School of Art; Israel's sixth Prime Minister Menachem Begin; the victims of the 1929 Arab riots and 1936–39 Arab revolt, the fallen from the 1948 War of Independence, together with Jews of many generations in their diversity
